SEO & IFrame problem
-
Hi All,
I will try and keep this as simple as possible.
My product page links to a separate page with an IFrame, giving my users the option to upload artwork for the product. The IFrame contains the external file upload site (mail big file). When finished, the user can use a button link to return to the product page to continue with their order.
As soon as the page with the IFrame was crawled by Google, the IFrame page started to rank in place of where my product page used to rank, yet there is no content on the page relating to my product (just a file upload).
So now users are visiting the IFrame via the same query which must be an absolute headache and not useful at all.
I have tried the following:
1. Added a line in body text which contains an internal link pointing to the product page using exact match anchor text for the query. (This didn't work)
2. I applied a no index tag to the IFrame, and now my product page is no longer ranking at all.
Can anyone help me solve this puzzle. I believe I might be missing something.
Kind regards,
Adam

Hi,
That is a confusing problem, but it seems like most of the page content is coming from the Iframe and not the page itself. If you can I would use "No Follow" and "NoIndex" tags on the Iframe and see if that helps. If possible I would build out the content on the correct page as much as possible without affecting its usability too much.
Also, you can try "rel canonical" to the correct page and hopefully that will help.

Redirects & 404 Errors
Hi everyone, I'm probably missing some GLARING error here, but I'm hoping you can help me! We recently built a new website on Wordpress and attempted to use a redirect plugin to take care of some old pages. The issue we are having though, is that when you click an old link you are not automatically redirected and instead are given a 404 error page. Then, when you try to view another page (by clicking a navigation item), every pages shows a 404 error. I implemented a redirect plugin, however it seems to start to work then still throws the 404 page. I believe this has something to do with the htaccess file which has the standard WP rewrite info in there... The way the old site was setup was kind of janky, so wondering if it's on that side or if I'm just going crazy. An old URL example would be http://orchards inn.com/index.php/specials and the new page is http://orchardsinn.com/special-offers. Sometimes the redirect seems to work, and others it actually throws a 404 page, then every other page in the navigation is 404'd as well. Your help is GREATLY appreciated!!

Parked & primary domains
Aloha, I am completely new at this, so please forgive me if I am not describing my question very well, or if these questions has been asked many times before! My husband and I have an LLC and a DBA which sell the same products (although with different emphasis). For the LLC and DBA we have different domains, but we would like for both domains to lead to the website. To do this I have set one domain as primary (makanagardens.com) and the other as parked (bigislandcoffeeroasters.com). My questions are these: Since both domains have the same content, could I be "demoted" by google for duplicate content? I have submitted sitemaps for both domains to google and bing. Is that alright? Does it matter which domain name we link-build upon? So far I have been link-building upon whichever domain is applicable at the time. Thanks!

Differences in Sitemaps SEO wise?
I'm a bit confused about sitemaps. I'm just learning SEO so forgive me if this is a basic question. I've submitted my site to google webmaster using http://pro-sitemaps.com and the sitemap generator it creates. I've also seen sites do this: http://www.johnlewis.com/Shopping/ProductList.aspx and http://www.thesafestcandles.com/site-map.html so I did something similar for my site (www.ldnwicklesscandles.com). You figure you see everyone do it you might as well try it too and hope it works. 😉 So I've done both 1 and 2. Which sitemap is best for SEO purposes or should I do both? Is there any format that should or shouldn't be used for Option 2? Any site examples for good practice would be helpful.

Correct Indexing problem
I recently redirected an old site to a new site. All the URLs were the same except the domain. When I redirected them I failed to realize the new site had https enable on all pages. I have noticed that Google is now indexing both the http and https version of pages in the results. How can I fix this? I am going to submit a sitemap but don't know if there is more I can do to get this fixed faster.

Subdomains & SEO
Exact match domains are great for ranking but what about domains which contain just half of the full phrase being targeted? eg. If you owned the domain rentals.co.uk but wanted to target the search term "car rentals" Regarding backlinks, would it be best to link back to your rentals.co.uk homepage (using anchor text "car rentals") or to one of the following: a) www.rentals.co.uk/car-rentals b) car.rentals.co.uk AND 301 redirect to www.rentals.co.uk c) car.rentals.co.uk AND 301 redirect to www.rentals.co.uk/car-rentals

Changing DNS -- SEO implications?
Hey Moz, We're migrating an old site on an old server over to a new server/DNS. The plan is to keep the same URL structure and reuse our existing URL's. As long as we make minimal changes to each page's content, we should be able to update our DNS entry and get all the pages recreated and assigned to their correct URLs without any reduction in SEO rankings. Is this correct? This site gets a lot of organic traffic and ranks highly on some challenging keywords, so it's key that we retain our rankings as much as possible. I've read that it's wise to lower the DNS time-to-live to one hour, about a day before the move, to help Google crawl the DNS a little quicker. Are there any other recommendations you guys can offer or past experiences?

Code problem and the impact on links
We have a specific URL naming convention for 'city landing pages': .com/Burbank-CA .com/Boston-MA etc. We use this naming convention almost exclisively as the URLs for links. Our website had a code breakdown and all those URLs within that naming convention led to an error message on the website. Will this impact our links?
