301 redirection help needed!
-
Hi all,
So if we used to have a domain (let's say olddomain.com) and we had a new site created at newdomain.com how do we properly setup redirects page to page. Caveat, the urls have changed so for instance the old page oldomain.com/service is now newdomain.com/our-services on the new site.
- Do we need to have hosting on the old site?
- Do we need to setup individual 301s for each page corresponding to the new page?
Just looking for the easiest way to do this CORRECTLY.
Thanks,
Ricky

Good one Paul - is there an article on this you can point me at?
Thanks
-
Hi Paul, thanks! This is what I was looking for. So as long as we forward the old domain, it looks like we can set up the individual URL redirects simply using a plugin in Wordpress. Got it to work!

There's no reason to keep the old hosting just for the redirects. And that introduces a real weak point as at some future date, someone who doesn't realise it's still running only an htaccess file will delete what they think is unnecessary hosting.
Instead, use DNS of the old domain to point it to the new domain and then write the redirects in the new domain's htaccess.
Paul
P.S. And yes, you'll need to write redirects for each old URL that changes. If there are patterns of URLs, it's worth using regex to cut down the number of redirects written.

You have to do page by page like Nigel suggested that is the best way to do it and keep them in place for ever!.

Hi Ricky
That is pretty much exactly what you need to do.
301 olddomain to newdomain
Then at page level
301 olddomain/services to newdomain/new-services
You will need hosting on the old site but only really so that the .htaccess file can be filled with redirects. If you let the domain expire then Google et al won't see the redirects. If there are inbound links from other websites then you need to do this to maintain link equity to the new domain and pages.
Regards
Nigel

Does removal of internal redirects(301) help in SEO
I am planning to completely remove 301 redirects manually by replacing such links with actual live pages/links. So there will be no redirects internally in the website. Will this boost our SEO efforts? Auto redirects will be there for incoming links to non-existing pages. Thanks, Satish

We own discount banner printing and we are trying to rank 1 for pvc banners or vinyl banners and cannot understand for example how the below is correct, we did suffer a link penalty years ago but we fixed this and the domain has some good links (more and better quality than the sites above us) and cannot understand how we rank below most of the sites above us? If we type on for example pvc banners we get http://www.bannershop.co.uk/cats/pvc_banners.htm https://www.hfe-signs.co.uk/banners.php http://bannerprintingandroid.co.uk/pvc-banners/ http://www.discountbannerprinting.co.uk/banners/vinyl-pvc-banners.html (our website) And if we type in vinyl banners we get http://www.vistaprint.co.uk/banners.aspx http://www.bigvaluebanners.co.uk/ http://vinylbannersprinting.co.uk/ http://www.discountdisplays.co.uk/html/vinyl_banners.html https://www.buildasign.co.uk/banners http://www.monkey-print.com/outdoor banners/budget-outdoor-banners http://www.discountbannerprinting.co.uk/banners/vinyl-pvc-banners.html (Our website)

Is it a problem to have too many 301 redirects within your site
my website is translated into 10+ languages, but our news articles are often only published in 1-2 languages. Currently, URLs are created in the unpublished news languages that then 301 redirect the user to main news page since the content doesnt exist in that language. Is this implementation okay or is there a preferred method we should be using so that we don't have a large number of pages on the site with redirects? Thanks!

Buying Domains from an auction and 301 redirecting to your new site.
Lets say I have a website in not to competitive niche. I was considering buying a few aged domains from godaddy auctions and 301 redirecting them to my new domain. Can this alone be enough to rank pretty high for a uncompetitive niche? Can this also be a link building technique in itself since the link juice from the domain purchased carries over? Thanks

Help needed regarding 1:1 Redirection
Hi all, We are currently working on a very large site having approximately 5000+ pages and its going to be 301 redirected to a new domain. For this we need to redirect each and every page on a 1:1 basis as mentioned in the Webmaster Central guide. Now the site is in flt file and not in CMS and is becoming very tough to set manually redirection for these pages. The site is hosted in a Windows server and using IIS web config file. Now any help regarding any automated or easy way to do the 1:1 redirection will be appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Is it ok to use both 301 redirect and rel="canonical' at the same time?
Hi everyone, I'm sorry if this has been asked before. I just wasn't able to find a response in previous questions. To fix the problems in our website regarding duplication I have the possibility to set up 301's and, at the same time, modify our CMS so that it automatically sets a rel="canonical" tag for every page that is generated. Would it be a problem to have both methods set up? Is it a problem to have a on a page that is redirecting to another one? Is it advisable to have a rel="canonical" tag on every single page? Thanks for reading!

301 Redirect using rewrite rule in .htaccess
Hi guys, I have these types of URLs with the format below that are seen as duplicate contents http://www.mysite.com/index.php?a=11&b=15&d=3&c=1 I wanted to permanently redirect them to my homepage. I am thinking if this is possible in .htaccess using rewrite conditions? Thanks in advance...
