New Google Update - weird ranking
-
Hi
I wanted to get your thoughts on this keyword ranking.
This page - https://www.key.co.uk/en/key/albatross-heavy-duty-office-chairs-24-stone is now ranking for heavy duty office chair 30 stone
We don't mention 30 in the content anywhere, apart from the USPs at the top of the page - could this be it?! I don't know how to change this, or I guess Google is still figuring things out and maybe this will drop off?
Love to get some thoughts on this!

Hi Ed
Yes would love to see the whiteboard Friday on it!
No, not seeing it as an issue, more trying to workout why it's happening and how I can provide the customer with the 30 stone option - we don't sell any so I've mentioned it to the product managers.
My other struggle is the changes I can actually make to the product page - this is controlled by a development team in France and we have little room to make changes which can be frustrating.
You're last point about product pages interfering with one another will be a big one for me. I have so many products which are almost identical,
say I have 4 x high back faux leather chairs with arms, these pages will always compete & how do you get around this? We've tried to optimise so we have variations of the keywords in the titles, so they're all slightly different, but if Google knows these are all related surely they're always going to compete?
Thanks!

Google may well be responding to implicit user feedback. So they gather data through chrome that people who want 24 stone chairs often also want 30 stone chairs. Rankbrain is trying to guess with it's AI that these people want the same things.
Why would you not want to be ranking for both? Is it because you don't sell the 30 stone version? There have been some quantum shifts in ranking over the last few weeks and many sites are seeing their content being picked up in lots of search terms not mentioned anywhere on the page. There's a whiteboard Friday about it somewhere. Mods please could you help remind me which one it is for Becky?
I've noticed since writing about endodontics that Google is now calling us an endodontist. This is a problem for us because it's illegal to call yourself a specialist if you're not one. And I've not mentioned anywhere that we are specialists but the content is obviously as good as what an endodontist would produce.
So it's a tricky one. I'm not going to de-optimise. Instead were hiring an endodontist! So perhaps a pragmatic solution might be to ask your client to get some 30 stone chairs in stock or see what the demand is like and get ready to order if people start asking for them.
It's not a problem, or if it is it's a great problem to have! Perhaps you could help me with more specifics on the background and why this is a particular issue for your client? There are ways to de-optimise but I'd usually save them for different brands. So Company X 25 stone chairs and 25 stone chairs both contain the words 25 stone chairs, so might intefere internally with one another, stack in the serps or depress results. So in this case I'd just use the brand names and not the descriptors. Or choose one word for one and another word for another. But make sure google doesn;t consider those words to be the same. You can test this by typing in something like 'E-cig' and if 'Ecig' is highlighted in bold in the meta descriptions of the results then google considers it the same thing.
But I'd not be concerned. This is a growth opportunity!

Duplicate website pages indexed: Ranking dropped. Does Google checks the duplicate domain association?
Hi all, Our duplicate website which is used for testing new optimisations got indexed and we dropped in rankings. But I am not sure whether this is exact reason as it happened earlier too where I don't find much drop in rankings. Also I got replies in the past that it'll not really impact original website but duplicate website. I think this rule applies to the third party websites. But if our own domain has exact duplicate content; will Google knows that we own the website from any other way we are associated like IP addresses and servers, etc..to find the duplicate website is hosted by us? I wonder how Google treats duplicate content from third party domains and own domains. Thanks

Google Algorithm change this month - theories ?
Hi Moz fans! If you've not had the chance to check out moz cast go check it out it seems Google has been busy and so much so it broke Moz cast. There has been some discussion on seo round table about the changes and something seems to be going on. I wanted to find out how you guys are all finding it have you had a change in rankings? Any theories on what you think Google is up to? Personally I've seen rather a few of my sites go up in the rankings last week or so. As always look forward to hearing your thoughts and feelings on it Moz.

June algorithim update?
Did I miss an alogrithim update that happened last month? The rankings for my tracked keywords do not seem effected (so I didn't notice until now) but according to SEMRush the number of keywords I am ranked for dropped significantly in June. Traffic did not significantly drop in one day, but compared to last month is 20% lower (and should have been ~30% higher based on industry trends) According to SEMRush other websites in my industry, including the most reputable ones still ranked #1 for the most competitive terms - seem to have also dropped significantly this month the number of positions they were ranked for...

Redesign, new content, new domain and 301 redirects (penalty?)
We merged our old webshops into one big project. After a few days we received our rankings back and traffic was coming in. Then suddenly we lost almost all rankings overnight. We did not use any wrong seo techniques and have unique content, written by our own writers. Is this a penalty or do we have to wait longer?

Google Update?
We have a website that for the past several weeks has been very consistent at between 13,500 and 14,200 daily visits and this site received 15,600 last Thursday. THIS week, Monday is at 22,200, Tuesday is at 26,200, and at mid-day today (at about our traffic halfway point in the day) we're already at 14,000 today. This was a site that was bringing about 14,000 visits as of May 16th last year and dropped to 11,000 the following week. The traffic to this site this week is so far beyond statistical analysis that there must have been something that happened.

Rankings drop, but only one term
Has anyone experienced a significant drop on just one term? I have about 10 terms that I am constantly monitoring and 9 out of 10 are unchanged or even improved, but 1 term was #1 and is now #11. Curious if anyone has experienced anything similar. I originally thought it was "Panda", but why wouldn't all my terms be affected??

Ranking Tracking Tool Not Accurate?
Is google still updating the algo on a daily basis or for the most part are you other mozzers seeing your rankings stick? I ask because the rank tracking software I use locally on my laptop shows me inaccurate rankings, as well as the SEOMOZ tool (which was just updates yesterday). I am not sure why this is happening, but as of yesterday I lost four page one rankings, which I didn't deserve anyway, and was apparently a fluke until they did the PR update. So I dont mind, but I am curious if they are still tweaking on a daily basis or if its safe to continue link building. I dont want them to make another change and have it affect my rankings in a negative way.
