Same URL for languages sub-directories
-
Hi All,
I have a main domain and 9 different subdirectories for languages, example:
www.example.com/page.html
www.example.com/uk/page-uk.html
www.example.com/es/page-es.html
we are implementing hreflang tags for the languages, but we are thinking to get rid of the dashes on the languages URL: -uk or -es, so it will be:
www.example.com/page.html
www.example.com/uk/page.html
www.example.com/es/page.hrml
would this be a problem? to have same page names even if they are in different subdirectories?
would we need to add canonical tags, at lease for the main domain URLs? www.kornferry.com/page.html
Thank you,
Rachel

Hi Rachel, I think István makes a good point about the translated urls but just as a quick follow-up to your original question - it should not cause technical problems to have the page names the same while they are in different directories, because the total file path should be different, as long as you have hreflang properly set up.
Regarding your question about canonical tags - I would not canonicalise some of these language variants to other language variants, even if you do decide to make the page names the same. Hreflang is saying "these two pages are different language variants of the same thing" whereas canonical tags are saying "this page is just the same as this other thing" - the canonical tag doesn't have the language component so could conflict with your hreflang and cause errors with things like return tags. At the very least it could confuse Google as to which page should rank in which country, for instance, how can the /de/ page rank in Germany if we're telling Google it's not the canonical version of the page, but the other one from root is?
Hope that helps!

Hi Rachel,
Regarding the language code in the URL, you can leave it (page**-uk**.html,page**-es**.html, etc.), but maybe it would be an idea of having a translated page url for each language. For example:
This would serve a little bit better than the previous version, where you would have:

Which product URL to include in Sitemaps?
Hi Does the product URL's in Sitemaps affect the sub-categories authority too? For example, if I have a product with 2 URL's and which have a canonical tag: **/brands/michael-kors/bags/**jet-set-double-zip-wallet/ **/women/accessories/wallets/**jet-set-double-zip-wallet/ If I make the main URL "/women/accessories/wallets/jet-set-double-zip-wallet/" and set that as the Canonical URL & list that URL in the XML Sitemap, will it also mean the "/women/accessories/wallets/" category will get more authority and increase it's power to rank? Thanks Frankie

Greek language distinctiveness
Hello, i am facing the below problem and want your help. I will give an example for you to understand. The problem with the Greek language is that in or words we have tones above a letter in the most words. I will present now which the problem is. When you want to write dissertation the right way is "πτυχιακές εργασίες" and this is the most important service we offer the problem is that people are searching using the same keyword but without the tones like : "πτυχιακες εργασιες" . If you see monthly searches in keyword planner the difference in volume is huge. Also in rankings for the first one i am on place 2 but for the second one i am on place 3. The problem is that i cannot have the grammatically wrong phrase in my page title and also in my content so what should i do? The same problem is almost on all keywords where people are searching without a tone or searching the same phrase using English characters like "ptyxiakes ergasies". I have fully analyzed the problem. Please give a hand thanks in advance

Use hreflang language or hreflang language & country code
Hi, our website has 7 languages, but only one English version (site.com/en). When I add a hreflang tag below, is it enough to just target English search queries no matter where they come from by using only the language code, or should I specify all countries (UK, USA, Ireland, Australia, NZ, ...) by using separate hreflangs? Same for Portuguese, Dutch & French... Should I just add the language tags or specify all countries? Like I said, we don't have localized versions for those countries, with specific content targeting those countries.

Should we introduce subfolders into the URLs on a new site?
A site we are working on currently gives no indication of the subfolders in the URL. Eg. the site uses: www.examplesite.com/brand-name Rather than: www.examplesite.com/popular-products/brand-name There are breadcrumbs on site to show the user what part of the site they are in and how they navigated there. We are building a new site and have to decide what route to take: Since the site is already performing relatively well in the SERPs and the URLs are nice and short this way, is it a good idea to keep them like this or is it better for usability to include the subfolders? This post suggests that we would be best off to keep the URLs as they are - particularly since less would be changed http://www.seomoz.org/blog/should-i-change-my-urls-for-seo Thanks in advance for your opinions! 301 from a Link Directory
Hey guys. I am more looking for advice to confirm something on this one if anyone could offer help? My client has a reciprocal only link directory that is actually ranking higher than their company website. Surely from an SEO point of view, in this instance, it would make sense to kill the link directory and put a re-direct on the whole thing over to their main site? Would appreciate any advice on this one 🙂

Duplicate content and URL's
Hi Guys, Hope you are all well. Just a quick question which you will find nice and easy 🙂 I am just about to work through duplicate content pages and URL changes. Firstly, With the duplicate content issue i am finding the seo friendly URL i would normally direct to in some cases has less links, authority and root domain to it than some of the unseo friendly URL's. will this harm me if i still 301 redirect them to the seo friendly URL. Also, With the url changed it is going to be a huge job to change all the url so they are friendly and the CMS system is poor. Is there a better way of doing this? It has been suggested that we create a new webpage with a friendly URL and redirect all the pages to that. Will this lose all the weight as it will be a brand new page? Thank you for your help guys your legends!! Cheers Wayne
