Competitor Search Visibility
-
In the Moz Search Visibility graph, how are a clients competitor companies calculated? Where is this information gathered from? We add the clients GA account to the campaign, not the competitors.

Great help, thanks

Jo obviously wrote a great answer, but I'm just chiming in to say - yes, this is actually how it works for most tools which predict SEO (organic) visibility. It's a relative comparison and it's not to be confused with a traffic estimate, unless (as in some tools, like SEMRush or Ahrefs) that is explicitly stated to be the case
Usually the formula is something like: 1% of a keyword's search volume multiplied by the average (or specific, if the data is available) CTR (click-through rate) of the keyword's attained ranking position on Google
So for example, let's say you wanted to calculate your SEO visibility for the hypothetical keyword of "big red car"
In this example, "big red car" has 100 average monthly searches (on Google)within your specified search area (let's say the USA)
You are at position 1, which you know nets roughly 33% of clicks from active searchers
It therefore follows that you take 1% of the search volume (1% of 100 = 1) and multiply it by the % of people who usually click-through (33%). So you get 1x33%=33 - so you would expect to see (extremely roughly) 33 searchers a month through that keyword
That being said all SEO tools include slightly different mixes of data (some will be using actual CTR figures vs average ones, or CTR figures based on data-modeling combined with machine learning). Ahrefs actually uses click-stream data in formation of its search-volume figures. In any-case, since all search volume figures from Google are sampled - you have to take all of these stats with a pinch of salt. Relatively speaking (when comparing one site to another, using the same balanced equation(s) - such metrics are strong and useful. In 'absolute' terms (when predicting actual traffic figures) these metrics are less than helpful
When looking at entire websites and comparing them, usually the sum-visibility for most sites is constructed by adding together... all the SEO vis for all of the site's (known / indexed) keyword rankings on Google
SEO visibility is a comparative decision-making metric which guides you at a strategic level. It's not a metric that you should 'bank' on in terms of input/output spend (EVER!)

Hi there,
Jo from the Moz Help Team here.
Our Search Visibility score represents the overall ranking performance for your tracked keywords. This isn't based on GA data, but rather ranking data we have collected based on the keywords and competitors you added to your Campaign.
Search Visibility is calculated by:
-
Taking all of your keywords and the associated URL’s position and applying a CTR (click-through rate) for each position.
-
The CTRs are then summed
-
This number is then divided by the total number of keywords.
You may be interested to know that we have a lot of great guides and videos on our Help Hub, including this one on Search Visibility.
I hope this helps!
Jo

Why only 3 Competitors in Campaigns?
Why does Moz only allow for 3 followed competitors in campaigns? Doesn't seem like a big deal to collect and provide data on a few more.

Can you see the top keywords of a competitor?
Hey Moz. Is it possible for me to enter a competitor domain, and see their top organic keywords?

Will the Moz Keyword Explorer Tool (which I LOVE BTW) some day allow you to see search result figures broken down by location?
I know this is a long shot, but are there plans to eventually filter keyword volumes by location like the Google AdWords tool does today? Or is that never going to happen? Assuming not, are there other recommended avenues for teasing out keyword volumes of a local vicinity? I work for a health system, so nearly all of our customers are local. So I always feel like I have to guess on words like "urgent care" since obviously I'm not trying to rank nationally, but often people do not use a geo modifier term when searching.

Can You Add Avg. Monthly Searches to Custom Reports
Hi, I recently had a client ask me to add avg. monthly searches to the keyword tracking portion of their monthly report, so they can see the 'value' of the keyword terms we are tracking. Is there a way to add this column to the keyword tracking portion of the custom reports? I'm crossing my fingers that this is possible. Thanks for reading!

Search when connecting to analytics account
Hi Moz! Are you able to add a search feature for Google Analytics accounts when you are adding a new Moz Pro Campaign and trying to connect the analytics account? We currently manage hundreds of websites with multiple analytics profiles and it is a horrible experience to spend over 10 minutes constantly scrolling through accounts that are in no specific order to find the correct one, and then having to repeat the experience because you went a bit too fast and missed the account. This is a major pain point for me and I rarely even bother to connect to Moz Pro to analytics accounts any more as the experience of it is awful. Thanks, Jamie

What tool will check my keyword rank alongside search volume for that keyword?
Hello Moz Community, I'm wondering if there is a tool (or a function with Moz Pro) that will check my keyword rank alongside search volume for that keyword. I'm able to see my keyword rankings in Moz Pro, but can't see search volume for those keywords. I'd love to prioritize which lower-ranking keywords should be improved based on their search volume. Any ideas? Thanks! Robert

Competitor changed URL. What data do I lose if I update Moz settings?
One of my competitor's has changed their domain URL. I want to update this in the Moz campaign settings but I get a warning that all historical data will be lost if I do. Is that really true? I replaced one of my competitors with another for a week and didn't seem to lose historical data. Incidentally, could this be a feature request to allow more competitors to be tracked? eqEhEHz.jpg
