Paginated category pages still showing in Google
-
Despite our blog using rel=next and rel=”prev” we’re still finding paginated pages getting impressions in Google, suggesting they are taking up unnecessary crawl budget.
An example is: https://www.theukdomain.uk/seo/page/2/
What steps would you recommend I take to most benefit my sites SEO?
Thanks,
Sam

Hi Sam,
Even with that random bombshell announcement from Google about rel=next/prev, I still wouldn't worry about this too much.
It will be interesting to see if anyone else has a different opinion though!
I don't suppose you have explored server logs to validate the claim that Google is being inefficient in its crawling? I don't personally see how having a page 2 indexed equates to this, but understand in general where you are coming from with this!
Kind regards,
Nick

I'm always in two minds over what Google says and what actually happens. For example, I've seen a lot of cases of sites cutting out thin pages which have resulted in boosted Organic Visibility.
The paginated pages aren't a major concern as there isn't a lot of them and I would usually focus my time on more impactful activities but with rel=next/prev now depreciated and working through an audit I'm keen to get to a resolution.
Sam
P.S. With had issues with the latest version of Yoast so are awaiting a fix.

Hi Sam,
Just had a quick look at the URL in question and noticed you were using Wordpress AND Yoast which is a great choice .
Honestly, I wouldn't worry about page 2 etc being indexed.
This used to be a common SEO practice and an option in Yoast, however it has since been advised as the incorrect thing to do by Google
Please see this post here which covers it with references: https://yoast.com/pagination-seo-best-practices/
I also noted that your site has 1,100 pages indexed in Google. Again, directly referencing something John Mueller recently said... I wouldn't worry too much about crawl budget optimisation: https://www.seroundtable.com/google-crawl-budget-overrated-25825.html
Hope these two links help further your knowledge of SEO, you're asking all the right questions!
I must admit, it's only recently I've let go of my former held assumptions around this...
Kind regards,
Nick
P.S
I notice your version of Yoast is out of date (7.6), I'd get that updated ASAP to the latest (10.0) for additional features and most importantly for security

Why does Google rank a product page rather than a category page?
Hi, everybody In the Moz ranking tool for one of our client's (the client sells sport equipment) account, there is a trend where more and more of their landing pages are product pages instead of category pages. The optimal landing page for the term "sleeping bag" is of course the sleeping bag category page, but Google is sending them to a product page for a specific sleeping bag.. What could be the critical factors that makes the product page more relevant than the category page as the landing page?

Google indexing only 1 page out of 2 similar pages made for different cities
We have created two category pages, in which we are showing products which could be delivered in separate cities. Both pages are related to cake delivery in that city. But out of these two category pages only 1 got indexed in google and other has not. Its been around 1 month but still only Bangalore category page got indexed. We have submitted sitemap and google is not giving any crawl error. We have also submitted for indexing from "Fetch as google" option in webmasters. www.winni.in/c/4/cakes (Indexed - Bangalore page - http://www.winni.in/sitemap/sitemap_blr_cakes.xml) 2. http://www.winni.in/hyderabad/cakes/c/4 (Not indexed - Hyderabad page - http://www.winni.in/sitemap/sitemap_hyd_cakes.xml) I tried searching for "hyderabad site:www.winni.in" in google but there also http://www.winni.in/hyderabad/cakes/c/4 this link is not coming, instead of this only www.winni.in/c/4/cakes is coming. Can anyone please let me know what could be the possible issue with this?

Google serving wrong page...
Hi, When you Google: "Los Angeles divorce attorney", you will see this site on the 5th page of the SERPS: www.berenjifamilylaw.com/blog/. For some reason, Google is serving the BLOG page as opposed to the homepage. This has been going on now for several weeks. Any tips on how to fix this? Obviously, the Homepage is more relevant and has more links going to it, so not sure why it's happening. Would you just leave it alone? Would you use robots.txt to block Google from crawling the BLOG post page? Thanks.

Redirect Search Results to Category Pages
I am planning redirect the search results to it's matching category page to avoid having two indexed pages of essentially the same content. Example http://www.example.com/search/?kw=sunglasses

wil be redirected to
http://www.example.com/category/sunglasses/ Is this a good idea? What are the possible negative effect if I go this route? Thanks.0 -
