why does a business rank differ on google search and google maps (for example, a hair salon we do seo for ranks 5th for "hair salon in Dublin" on Google Maps and ranks 10th on Google search)
-
There are many citation services that I do for my site (Vinyl Cutter Machines), but they just spam your links to unrelated citations that can end up hurting you more than helping you. Do them manually in your spare time if you don't have an SEO team,
Google isn't perfect, and my local area is a perfect example of that.
But let's say you live in a city called Wakaketa and you type in "Wakaketa Web Design". Very often, you'll see a top 3 ranking for a business with that in its name. The other businesses may have reviews, and this one will have none, and it still ranks.
Like I said though, this doesn't always necessarily apply to competitive niches and heavily populated cities.

If you're talking about how your business shows up with a map and specific business details on the right hand side of the serps, that's GMB. Google maps complements GMB but consider them separately, as far as I'm concerned. GMB has an entire interface for including your business details, location, reviews, etc. and if you haven't claimed your biz you need to go ahead and do that. Here's a bunch of info on it for you here at Moz.

Hi Chris, thanks very much for your quick reply.
I'm just making sure that you understand that question, which was, why was the ranking different on Google Search than it was on Google Maps?
If you understand it correctly, do you mean Google Maps is connected to Google My Business?
So when we apply SEO practices, Google Search has a different algorithm to Google My Business, which determines your rank on Google Maps?
Thanks!

Ryan,
Google search and Google My Business employ very different algorithms. They weigh different factors when deciding which results to show at the top. For example, only businesses within a specific geographic area will show up in the GMB results for a query but a wide variety of content, including businesses, video, documents, blogs, etc, for the whole country can show up in google search. With that being the case, it wouldn't be possible for the two to provide the same results in the same order.

Building a new page: What on-page SEO would you build in?
Hi all, Building a new page for a fairly competitive keyword. Need to make sure the on-page SEO is pretty top notch, because link building (including internal links) will be difficult. I've optimised the meta description, the alt tags and image names, and included the keyword in the Title Tags. Not a great deal I can do with regards to optimising for mobile or considering migrating to the AMP project because this is handled externally. What else would you suggest? Cheers in advance, Rhys

SEO and auto login with redirect
Hi, we have a site where user we know (cookie-based) is automatic redirected to private internal page. Unknown guests are staying on the page google search sent them. The redirect is done with a 302 to the private page. When I examine organic search and landing pages in analytics I see that more than 50% of the landing pages are private pages (inaccessible for the google-bot). This is because analytics does not register the redirecting page, just the target page. Is this harmful to SEO that so many users are redirected to other pages, or is this data not available to google-bot. The google bots is not redirect since they do not have the correct credentials. Do chrome or analytics send such data back to Google search? Is better to manipulate analytics page track call to use the address of the redirecting page? Or maybe skip to redirect, and just render the private content on the orginal page?

SEO, 301s & backslashes at end of URL
Wordpess started adding "/" (slashes) at the end of my urls and I've left them up for some time. Will removing them hurt search rankings or do I need to do a 301 redirect? For example - www.site.com/page1/ changed to www.site.com/page1 Are there any other ramifications I may not be thinking about besides just search rankings.

ECommerce Filtering Affect on SEO
I'm building an eCommerce website which has an advanced filter on the left hand side of the category pages. It allows users to tick boxes for colours, sizes, materials, and so on. When they've made their choices they submit (this will likely be an AJAX thing in a future release, but isn't at time of writing). The new filtered page has a new URL, which is made up of the IDs of the filter's they've ticked - it's a bit like /department/2/17-7-4/10/ My concern is that the filtered pages are, on the most part, going to be the same as the parent. Which may lead to duplicate content. My other concern is that these two URLs would lead to the exact same page (although the system would never generate the 'wrong' URL) /department/2/17-7-4/10/ /department/2/**10/**17-7-4/ But I can't think of a way of canonicalising that automatically. Tricky. So the meat of the question is this: should I worry about this causing issues with the SEO - or can I have trust in Google to work it out?
