SEOmoz total links fluxuations
-
I'm analyzing my clients and competitor back links and are noticing alot of up and down fluxuations. For example last month we had 1400 back links, last week 1350 back links, and today 1450 back links. Also, one competitor went from 25,000 to 2,700 in the space of a few weeks.
My question is how can I explain to the client that their back links are going down when they are paying for a back link building service (100 back links per month).
Thank you for your time.

Mathew, maybe that competitor got some links showing at the homepage/blogroll/all pages in a domain because it was a recent post or whatever, and when they've updated it, the 99% of the links are gone. Temporal issues like that one can also be seen at the webmaster tools also.
maybe it's some kind of error of the seomoz tool, dunno, but just a thought too

That is a great question Matthew. Unfortunately, I do not know the answer. I would recommend reaching out to the SEOmoz help desk, as it pertains to the detailed mechanics of how their tool works.

Thanks for your quick response.
One thing I just noticed was the competition site that lost 20,000 links has also recently updated their website with new content and new urls. This would probably cause a lot of those links to return 404 errors. If those 404 error back links were 301 redirected (eg. with .htaccess file) would the Linkscape crawler still pick up those back links?

The links which appear in Open Site Explorer are based upon the Linkscape crawl of the internet. Prior to July 25th, the links shown in OSE were appearing normal.
On July 25th Linkscape was updated and there were numerous issues which affected some data. Not all of the links appeared, and some erroneous links appeared. Today the Linkscape index was updated and hopefully all is well again. Everything appears to be correct for my sites.
Your client should also understand that it can take up to 2 months for a link to appear in the Linkscape index.
Furthermore, the Linkscape crawl only captures the top 25% of web pages. If you have a single website with a footer or other site wide link which isn't captured because it was removed, or because the site's ranking lowered to where they are no longer in the top 25%, that can cause a huge fluctuation in your link profile numbers. I would suggest use the number of linking domains, not the total number of links.

Alternatives To Link Detective
Hi, A while back I used link detective to scan through our OSE reports. However, it seems that the site is no longer maintained and the system no longer seems to work, ie I upload the CSV file and then when i check back it leads to a blank screen. I wonder if anyone knows of a similar software as its functionality was very useful. Thanks

Small Link nalysis project - anyone
Hi, Not sure if someone can help me out. OSE only show the best mozrank data but i might have some links under that benchmark. Therefore anybody with a Majestic account that can filter new links from April 2012 to date. Payment not a problem. WMTools isnt showing data that i expected, so maybe its not there. Need a secondary opinion of the data from another source. Ive contacted some SEOmoz Recommended Companies...no response. Clearly have better things to do maybe.

SEOMoz bar shows competitors ranking higher in SERPS with less Moztrust and Mozrank?
We are targeting the term "wholesale fireworks" we are currently on page two and just completed some on page optimization. I noticed using the Mozbar that the SERP results on the first page show a site with near zero page rank, Moztrust, domain trust, etc.. It is steadily number two in SERPS. Our site is just as strong or stronger on these ratings as anyone on the first page. How is it possible that we are still hanging out on page 2?

8500+ seomoz errors and still rank one for high traffic keywords
I plugged a competitor into the campaign manager that is ranking #1 for many target keywords like "sprinkler parts" (18k broad, 720 exact) and "sprinklers"(550k broad, 4400 exact) and #2 for "sprinkler"(1mil broad, 8100 exact). This site has over 8500 errors on SEOmoz - I have spent a good deal of time fixing errors on all of our client websites and have gotten them down to 0 errors. I am just wondering if I have been wasting my time and if the errors that SEOmoz reports on even make a difference. How can a site rank for such high traffic keywords when it has 4k duplicate content and 4k duplicate page title errors? The site has 75 linking root domains according to opensiteexplorer. any help on this would be greatly appreciated!

Anyone have experience with "Link Research Tools" ?
I'm looking into Linkresearchtools.com for competitive backlink analysis. Already have SEOmoz (obviously) and Majestic. Anyone have any experience with the toolset? If so, what does it do well, what do you like, and where does it fall down? Cheers

In Open Site Explorer, what does it mean when a linking page does not contain any reference to the URl entered?
When running Open Site Explorer on a particular URL, I get a list of linking pages. Many of these pages have a high Page Authority. I am assuming that this is a list of pages that presumably link to the URL I entered. First, is this correct? Next, when I click on an entry in the list I don't see any reference to the URL on the page, even viewing the page source. What does this mean and why is the link in the list?
