Pagerank optimization
-
Hi,
I know that pagerank is not of that much importance but still I got few question regarding pagerank that I wish to be answered by senior seomoz staff!
- I heard that the pagerank is used in determination of original content by different ways i.e higher pagerank site get indexed faster and have low chance of easily penalized
- Higher pagerank website entitles you to get your newly written content indexed/ranked well without any backlinks just based on internal links.
I would like to know in detail about above two statements, and lastly I would appreciate if I can get help regarding dmoz listing or any other listing that worth it in terms of pagerank optimization.
Most high pagerank websites are quite strict in linking to other sites, and those who sells link on the site doesn't seems worthfull!
Detailed insight is appreciated on each and every point.
Thanks in advance

Hi Salman,
If you haven't already seen it, there is a great Whiteboard Friday video from Rand about Pagerank and what you should and shouldn't use it for. In the video, Rand talks about the things that Ryan mentioned in his answer, the points you asked about and a few other things.
Here is the link: What is Google's Pagerank Good For?
Hope that helps,

I believe I mentioned it a month or so ago, but I will make an effort to log the next couple times it happens and pass the information along.
Thx Sha!

Hi Ryan,
The "lost" post is one of a couple of issues I have been talking to the help team about during the past week. If you haven't already let them know that it happened, might be helpful if you could do that.
Seems there's a little gremlin in there somewhere

Hi Salman,
With regard to dmoz, it took me a long time to get my website registered with them. Of course the first step is to go through their registration process. In my case, I waited a few months, and then I registered again. Then after a 3rd try registering, I sent an email to one of the editors that I found online, and I asked her why my sight had not been registered. No response from the email, but a few weeks later, my site was finally registered.

I wrote a nice detailed reply which was somehow lost so I will summarize simply by saying:
Don't look at PR. Ignore it. If you are examining PR, you are looking at the wrong metric. First, it is one of over 200 factors which contribute to a web page's ranking. Secondly, the true PR which is used by Google is updated daily. The only PR figure which you can access is Toolbar PR which is only updated once every few months.
There is so much generic misunderstandings in your question it is hard to properly reply. For example, PR is applied to web pages, not web sites. If you are asking about PR in such detail, you would probably gain equal value to ensuring your meta keywords tag is properly optimized for your web page. In case you don't get the joke, meta keywords is given zero weight or consideration by Google. Nevertheless, because once-upon-a-time it was a factor, you still see brand new sites being created which use the meta keywords tag.

How can a site with no content, non SEO optimized or any value rank better?
I understand there are many more variables to rank #1, but this site is currently #1 for one of our top keywords and I really don't understand what they Competior site barely has 200 words on any given page, very few content other than images with no ALT tags, titles, No H1 tags. in other words the website is not SEO optimized. My site has content, product descriptions, images, relevant titles, and definitely more optimized than competitor. My site VS competitor Total pages: 246 (me) vs 49 (them) Page Authority: 34 vs 26 MozRank: 5.3 vs 4.5 MozTrust: 5.7 vs 5.4 Domain Authority: 22 vs 17 External Links: 65 vs 7 Internal Links 152 vs 1 Followed Links 14 vs 5 More C-Blocks 14 vs 4 Total Social Shares: 127 vs 4

#1 with grade F page optimization
For a specific keyword we rank #1 in Google. Nevertheless, I got a Grade F on SEOMoz regarding page optimization. All comments were certainly true. On another keyword (keyword 2) we got a grade A, on this keyword we rank #3. Strange enough I did linkbuilding on keyword 2 to the page regarding this keyword. I did not do linkbuilding for the first keyword. How can this be explained? Both keywords have average competition.

How do you optimize your site for surrounding areas?
For example, If I am optimizing a site for a dentist in West Palm Beach, Florida (the primary city) how do I ensure I am also optimizing my site for the smaller cities/towns that are part of West Palm Beach like Royal Palm Beach, Wellington etc.? If I am using "West Palm Beach" in my site and page titles etc., how do I also rank for the smaller cities? What are the basic tactics in terms of on-site and linking? For instance, lets say I offer Botox in West Palm Beach...how do I also optimize for Wellington, Royal Palm Beach and other local cities? Do I really have to create unique Botox content for each city? Thanks!

Targeting high Page Authority sites vs high Pagerank sites for backlinks?
For many years I've been working on seo/backlinks for my website. When doing analysis in opensiteexplorer I notice that the highest listed backlinks for my site are sites with high page authority and domain authority, rather than pagerank. For example one of the highest backlinks for my website has page authority/domain authority of 72/96 but the site itself is only a PR2, while my other backlinks have PR4, 5, or 6 with lower page authority. For a while I've been trying to partner with websites for backlinks from high pagerank sites, as I've always believed this is the #1 metric in relaying link juice. But OSE's metrics seem to not follow that train of thought -- it believes page authority/domain authority is a more important measure. Is it? Should I change my strategy to try to partner with websites that have high page authority rather than focusing so much on pagerank?

What is the Optimal Guest Post Byline?
Hi Moz Community! What do you think is the optimal guest post byline or bio paragraph at the end of a guest post. Is it better to link to your homepage with your site name as anchor text AND a deep page with a target keyword phrase? Or is it better to just use one link to a deep/money page on your site with a keyword phrase?

Pagerank sculpting case...
We have a website which has: a) a top navigation with links to top categories b) a footer with links to top categories and to every subcategory c) the following structure: home > category > subcategory > items For usability purposes I plan to remove the links at the bottom and add a drop down menu to each top category in top navigation. I plan to make all links in the top nav no follow in order to be able to do pagerank sculpting for each category (will build links that point to each category and pass link juice to subcategories and then to items, but I don't want link juice to spread across all of the site through links in the footer, which as said before will be removed) Is pagerank sculpting still valid? What do you think of my plan? Thanks for your time.

Should I optimize/link build all my pages at once?
I'm currently starting to optimize about 30 area specific pages for a property maintenance company and was wondering, what's the best way to link build multiple pages at once? Should I link build for all of the 30 the pages at once, or maybe focus on 5 individual pages - get them ranking well, then focus on the next 5 and so on?
