Second Blog on the Same Site? Best SEO Practice
-
I would like to start up another blog which has more of a "technical" topic coverage vs my regular blog, which appeals more to non-techie business folks. If the goal is to drive traffic ultimately to the main site, should I do this second blog on a different domain, a subdomain, or try to incorporate it as a separate-but-equal blog on the same domain as the currrent one? What would you do?

Hi Jim,
An example of two blogs in the same domain is seomoz
although the reasoning and application behind this is different than how I understand your intention . I have seen a lot of companies use a combination of /blog. /tech and /news to great success and I feel this might be relevant to your query. For SEO purposes I think sub folders will be a better choice as I feel your content is related. Definitely compose your blogs for the intended user . If you have the content go for it.

Go for the subfolder version. You could link back and forth "more technical details in our tech blog" etc.
Also you might want to consider combining them. Isn't that what categories are for? Or is the targeted audience to different? Lets assume the user perspective: will a normal reader feel comfortable (and not confused) by two blogs? Is the audience overlapping? Some companies have two blogs: one for their partners/supliers B2B and one for their customers B2C focused.

HI, thanks for the input. Actually, both blogs are business-focused, it's just that the main blog is targeted to business folks who are non-techie, but I have a lot of technical content I want to blog about too, so I'm going to do a "technical blog". Just trying to decide how best to do it.

Going for a subdomain (blog2.domain.tld) is the safe bet, especially if your second blog is totally offtopic to your main sites content.
Using a folder (www.domain.td/blog2/) gets the new blog the benefits of existing links and new incoming links boost your main sites ranking.
If I understand you correctly you are running a tech-related company with a semi-personal blog on a subfolder. You want to promote a new, more technically focused/business related blog. If so, I would go for the subfolder und the same domain (i.e. domain.tld/new-blog/ ).

SEO, Rel Author and Several Clients
How do you deal with Rel author on blogs for your clients? Suppose I'm a contributor (or rather, the only copywriter) to a clients blog - which happens to be about DIY. The blog articles are written from the business perspective and published from 'the business'. not from Me. Should I be adding myself as a contributor and using my own personal Google profile on these blogs? If so, then it's my face that appears next to the blog post and I'm not sure that's what I want for a blog about fixing shelves etc! Am I misunderstanding how I should be using rel author? Is it for SEOs to work into client strategy, or is it just for our own personal blogs?

The concept of Blogging
Can anyone describe the fundamentals of blogging? Should I be aiming blog posts at "subject A vs subject B" or more on recent projects that have been worked on such as "keyword working with company A to complete subject X" ? Also, should I allow comments on posts and filter out the spam using plugins and manual methods or should I just turn them off and forget the hassle? Any help would be grand!

Can you have too many words on a page for SEO?
One line of thinking is that you can not have too many words on a page because the more words you have the higher the chances that a long tail phrase will attract traffic. But can you go overboard with this? Is there a limit to the number of words on a page in terms of SEO?

Best way to resolve duplicate content issue?
Not sure about what to do about this - I have a client who has a ton of pages (around 1200) which are all City specific pages, for long-tail search. These are all written with paragraphs in the format such as: Order to [City] today. So every page has essentially the same content. The site also only has 1562 pages, so with 1200 of them being City-specific same-content pages, that can't be good. However the problem is that these pages still rank very well (usually Position 1 or 2) for the terms they're targeting, and bring in enough traffic and revenue to justify their purpose. We also have Country specific pages, and these are all with unique content, rather than the scripted content on the City pages. So for example, for Italy we might have: Italy Page (Unique Content) Rome (Duplicate Content) Milan (Duplicate Content) Venice (Duplicate Content) etc. (Duplicate Content) For a low traffic country (Austria), we tried to 301 the City pages to the Country page, but that only resulted in us seeing a drop in search results for the city keywords, from (usually) Position 1 to more like Page 3 or 4, so quite a drop. So, without writing 1200 pages worth of unique content, what would your advice be?

Company Blog Killing our Rankings?
Our product is organic, eco, natural etc. Our blog covers organic, eco, natural culture. Sounds like a winner right? But what if we sold jars and our blog rarely talked about jars because jars are Boring? In webmaster tools, our keyword significance for the word organic is ranked 1st but for the word jars we're ranked 41st . Should i be placing our blog on a subdomain to make sure Google starts placing more emphasis on our jars? ie content on our site rather than content on our blog?
