How important are meta keywords?
-
Would you bother using meta keywords?
-
I don't use meta keywords at all, everything seems fine. I don't want my competitors to see them too.
-
Google doesn't use them and they are a great indicator to your competitors about exactly which keywords you believe are important to your business if they look at your source code.
-
Some search engines actually use them to penalize words your targeting if they get the vaguest indication your involved in keyword stuffing/black hat. If your going whitehat I don't see any harm though.. Just take note if your doing anything a tad shady! Good luck.
-
In terms of SEO, they carry little weight and in my experience they're not really worth the time you need to spend writing them.
However, if you're planning on submitting your site to any link directories, it is worth noting that meta keywords are sometimes used by the directories to help them organise and rank your site.
-
To give you an idea, I did a test to see if Yahoo still uses them, and they do - however, Yahoo say they don't place much stock on them but they could be the difference between you getting above a competitor or not. However, Google and Bing don't use them at all.
Personally, I don't bother.
Regards,
Andy

How unique should meta descriptions be?
This is something I've been wondering for a while but can't seem to find any advice on. My website features ~60 different companies, each having their own profile page. When optimizing for SEO, how unique should each page's meta description be? Put another way, can I be penalized if the descriptions are all identical except for the company name I include? Any thoughts, resources, or best practices are appreciated!

Long Meta Titles on Dynamic Pages
What to do with long meta titles on press release pages. Unlike other pages on the site, press release pages have no physical value and are dynamically created picking data from the database. Such pages i notice are automatically picking the URL/H1 as meta title and meta description. How to shorten such meta titles and descriptions? Do such errors (related to dynamically created pages) matter? Tanveer

How long before I give up on a keyword
Making the assumption that all "controllable" factors are done correctly, and your DA and PA are competitive, is there a good rule of thumb on how long I should give a keyword before I try for a different keyword if I'm unable to break the first page on the Google's SERP?

Main Page Gone For Main Keyword
For the past 5-6 months I have consistenly ranked at positions #14-16 for snow guards on snoshield.com. The past 3 days I cannot find the home page anywhere in Google for that keyword. The only thing that has really changed over the past two months is I placed 3 guest blog posts on pretty highly trusted sites that are industry related and created links to the site using suggestions from getlisted. I've read other reports of others seeing similar things happen recently. I don't think this is a penguin thing, because I can still find the site by searching for the company name, I just can't find it when searching the keyword. I did notice that a different page on the site is now ranking in position #21 for this keyword, but this page is optimized for a different keyword phrase. Is it possible that even though the sub page is optimized for a different keyword phrase, I am cannibalizing the site?
