Frustration With Google Places
-
I have been trying to solve this problem with Google Places for quite some time now and just can't figure out where to go from here. I've tried several sent messages explaining the problem and even received several phone calls from Google Places trying to correct the issue with no luck. I have even tried totally deleting the listing and started over from scratch and re-verified the address with a mailed postcard.
My site: http://www.captainrichsmith.com
has a Google Places account set up and verified
For some reason when you do a Google search for one of my keywords
Miami Fishing Charters
On the listings normally under the letter "E" on the Map another website has a placemark at my location
Miami Fishing Charters Directory
www.fishing-charters-miami.com/ - CachedFishing Charters Miami is a quality directory of the best fishing boats in the Miami area. The top Miami fishing charters are listed on this website.
2550 South Bayshore Drive, Miami
(786) 263-9231
captainrichsmith.com (7)When you view this Google places listing further.
I see it is using my images, videos, placemark on map but NOT the address, phone number, or reviews.
Any help on this issue would greatly be appreciated

Thanks Robert. Very helpful. I actually started doing that just before I read this so I hope that means I'm thinking in the right direction. I just decided to go ahead and delete my listings for the time being ... I didn't have any reviews that will be really lost so I'll just start from scratch once I see his listing disappear.
Thank you everyone for your help on this..

Hope this helps. We occasionally run into an issue where someone who is unscrupulous creates a business listing in Places around a client business name. What we do is have several people put in a permanently closed notice with Google (since we have a couple of locations that are 500 miles apart it helps I think). Click on edit this place and mark Miami Fishing Charters as permanently closed. On comments put "this business has no physical location here any longer if it ever did" or words to that effect.
Utilizing this methodology we have had them removed. It does take a while at times though. I do think someone marked them closed, etc. in the last few minutes......
Good luck.

I would try what Kieran Daily suggest below... call them. It looks like they somehow list your address as their own. Maybe as an alt address. I think the other company is trying to claim your address. I put in a complaint email on the other page to tell Google the info is wrong... however you know how responsive they can be.
Do you do any paid advertising with Google? If so... ask your account rep to look into it.
-
Yes I have contacted this site admin. In reality it's not even a real business and doesn't have a physical location. The telephone number is just a "Google Voice" number with no answer. When I contacted the site email he did get back to me and stated he himself didn't know what was going on with the confusion
-
Have you rung this business? Ask them where they are located. In theory there is nothing stopping someone from using your information for a location and they may have verified using and SMS and not the postcard.
Try the old fashioned way first.
-
Yea tell me about it. I've been going nuts over this for too long. Not to mention when I received these phone calls from Google it's always the same "Overseas person" that barely speaks English reading off of a sheet... and when I try to explain the problem they have no clue what is going on.
Either way thanks Stephan for trying to help

I think I got it now... again sorry for my first response... clearly I was confused.
Something is strange... I am seeing the information between the 2 sites getting messed up.
I have never seen that before. This is probably beyond my skill level but I will see what I can find out about it.
-
Not sure if there is a bit of confusion. I'll try to add more information
My business address is:
25150 SW 147 AVE not the one they have listed for the other business 2550 South Bayshore Drive
They have the placemark pinned at my address along with my website listed below along with the other stuff I mentioned.
After doing a bit of research on Site Explorer the confused website "fishing-charters-miami.com" is such poor quality compared to my domain I can't understand why it would even get this spot
-
Sorry for the response above... I didn't understand the problem when I answered. I tried to delete the response but got an error... I'll try again.
-
That is weird. I do see the address and phone number... but your map marker is clearly not at the right address. It looks like there are a lot of businesses at 2550 South Bayshore Drive, Miami. When I do a map search for this address it says "multiple businesses" at this address but yours it not listed.
The only idea I have is to add a suite number if you have one. I noticed some of the businesses at the address say "2550 South Bayshore Drive #301, Miami". It is a shot in the dark but is currently the only idea I have.

Blocking Google from telemetry requests
At Magnet.me we track the items people are viewing in order to optimize our recommendations. As such we fire POST requests back to our backends every few seconds when enough user initiated actions have happened (think about scrolling for example). In order to eliminate bots from distorting statistics we ignore their values serverside. Based on some internal logging, we see that Googlebot is also performing these POST requests in its javascript crawling. In a 7 day period, that amounts to around 800k POST requests. As we are ignoring that data anyhow, and it is quite a number, we considered reducing this for bots. Though, we had several questions about this:
Technical SEO | | rogier_slag
1. Do these requests count towards crawl budgets?
2. If they do, and we'd want to prevent this from happening: what would be the preferred option? Either preventing the request in the frontend code, or blocking the request using a robots.txt line? The latter question is given by the fact that a in-app block for the request could lead to different behaviour for users and bots, and may be Google could penalize that as cloaking. The latter is slightly less convenient from a development perspective, as all logic is spread throughout the application. I'm aware one should not cloak, or makes pages appear differently to search engine crawlers. However these requests do not change anything in the pages behaviour, and purely send some anonymous data so we can improve future recommendations.0 -
Why is my blog disappearing from Google index?
My Google blogger blog is about 10 months old. In that time i have worked really hard with adding unique content, building relationships with other bloggers in the same niche, and done some inbound marketing. 2 weeks ago I updated the template to something cleaner, with a little more "wordpress" feel to it. This means i've messed about with the code a lot in these weeks, adding social buttons etc. The problem is that from some point late last week thurs/fri my pages started disappearing from Googles index. I have checked webmaster tools and have no manual actions. My link profile is pretty clean as its a new site, and i have manually checked every piece of content published for plagiarism etc. So what is going on? Did i break my blog? Or is something else amiss? Impressions are down 96% comparing Nov 1-5th to previous 5 days. site is here: http://bit.ly/174beVm Thanks for any help in advance.

Google Sitelinks
Hello, Good afternoon. I am having a site issue with Sitelinks. For some reason when I search Google for the brand I represent "California Olive Ranch" Sitelinks are not being generated. When I search for "Cal Olive Ranch" our site links are being generated. Our domain is Californiaoliveranch.com. Is there a way to tell Google to to change the site links to match our domain and brand name? Is this something that can be done in Google Webmasters? Thank you very much for your help. Adam P

Google having trouble accessing my site
Hi google is having problem accessing my site. each day it is bringing up access denied errors and when i have checked what this means i have the following Access denied errors In general, Google discovers content by following links from one page to another. To crawl a page, Googlebot must be able to access it. If you’re seeing unexpected Access Denied errors, it may be for the following reasons: Googlebot couldn’t access a URL on your site because your site requires users to log in to view all or some of your content. (Tip: You can get around this by removing this requirement for user-agent Googlebot.) Your robots.txt file is blocking Google from accessing your whole site or individual URLs or directories. Test that your robots.txt is working as expected. The Test robots.txt tool lets you see exactly how Googlebot will interpret the contents of your robots.txt file. The Google user-agent is Googlebot. (How to verify that a user-agent really is Googlebot.) The Fetch as Google tool helps you understand exactly how your site appears to Googlebot. This can be very useful when troubleshooting problems with your site's content or discoverability in search results. Your server requires users to authenticate using a proxy, or your hosting provider may be blocking Google from accessing your site. Now i have contacted my hosting company who said there is not a problem but said to read the following page http://www.tmdhosting.com/kb/technical-questions/other/robots-txt-file-to-improve-the-way-search-bots-crawl/ i have read it and as far as i can see i have my file set up right which is listed below. they said if i still have problems then i need to contact google. can anyone please give me advice on what to do. the errors are responce code 403 User-agent: *

Google Trusted Ranking effect?
We are looking into getting the google Trusted badge. We meet the requirements and now just deciding if it is worth the time to do it now or later. Has anyone noticed a difference in your organic rankings or PLAs with it. What about conversion rates? Any input would be great!

Google Places Question......
Hi Guys. I am working with a photographer they do not have a studio they shoot on location. However I noticed many photographers within their industry have their home address listed in their google places, and they too shoot on location. My client doesn't want their home address listed so I wondered what options there would be? Do you think renting mail forwarding address would suffice?

Why did our site drop in Google rankings?
My site's URL (web address) is: http://tinyurl.com/3svn2l9 Hi there, We operate a travel site that lists numerous tours, accommodation and activities. Since 6th August 2011 we have dropped from top 10 SERP rankings of our pages to around result number 100 (page 10) and losing massive amount of visitors via Google Search. Our Yahoo and Bing rankings are still in the top10. We need your advice and quick! The last changes we have made are the following: -redirected the non-www version to the www version on the 1st August -bought advertising with a follow link in a sidebar that is being populated across the site (+4000 pages) about 2 months ago -added a blog to the website 2 weeks ago and posted 2 posts to date. Additionally, our website structure allows visitors (and bots) to see the same listings via different URLs which caused duplicate content. This has been the case since the launch of our website about 1 year ago. To prevent this duplicate content we have placed canonical tags on the individual listings pages. Why did our site all of a sudden plummet in the rankings?

Canonical tags and internal Google search
Quick question: I want some pages that will have canonical tags, to show up in internal results for a Google site search that's built into the site. I'm not finished with the site, but is it correct to assume that pages with canonical will NOT show up in internal site search results, when powered by Google?
