Duplicate Content From My Own Site?!
-
When I ran the SEO Moz report it says that I have a ton of duplicate content.
The first one I looked at was my home page.
All of the above 3 have varying internal links, page authority, and link root domains. Only the first has any external links.
All of the others only seem to have 1 other duplicate page. It's a difference between the www and the non-www version.
I have a verified acct for www.kisswedding.com in google webmaster tools. The non-www version is in there too but has not been verified.
Under settings for the verified account (www.kisswedding.com), "Don't set a preferred domain" is checked off. Is that my mistake. And if so, which should I select? The www version or the non-www version?
Thanks!

Hi Ryan
I'm really sorry, but could you tell me what rule(s) to add to my htaccess file. I've been to my host (bluehost) but they don't know. Nice eh!?
I'd really appreciate it. And SO sorry!

I think I just had a major Duh! moment. Instead of linking back to index.html could I have been linking back to / all this time?
YES! Once you decide upon a correct URL structure for your website, you should always link directly to the appropriate URL.
On your site, you have chosen http://www.kisswedding.com/ to represent your home page. 100% of your links to the home page should use that URL. Any non-www links and /index.html links should be changed to this format.
Also, any signatures you use and content on other sites which you have control over should be updated to the proper format. Facebook, twitter, articles you published on other sites, etc. should all be updated.

omg.

And thank you for confirming. Much appreciated. It all seems logical and it's all stuff I thought needed to happen - but was hoping didn't.

Your understanding is correct. The most important item is #3.
You asked how do you know the www version because is getting more links
Well, I was taking your word for it. In your original question you stated "Only the first has any external links."
Since you asked I just checked and actually all 3 URLs have external links, but the www version has by far the most.
With respect to the index.html file, it does not have to exist but that is the way your site is currently set up. Either way, it is ok. Simply 301 redirect the /index.html page to the / page.
What you need to understand is that while on your site the /index.html page is the same as the / page, it is not necessarily that way on every site. Additionally while on your site the www and non-www version of a URL is the same page, it is not necessarily that way on every site. For this reason Google will treat each of these pages separately. It will appear to Google that you are duplicating content. Also, your link juice will be divided. A properly configured 301 redirect will resolve these issues.

Thank you Maurizio!!! Just what I needed to know!
-
Thank you so much Ryan.
You answered a lot of the questions I was contemplating. Can you confirm I've understood your suggestions?
1. Verify the non-www version in GWT
2. Set preferred domain to the www version because that's getting more links (how do you know that btw?).
3. Set up 301 redirects in my htaccess file.
4. You've recommended that i set my home page as http://www.kisswedding.com VERSUS http://kisswedding.com/index.html or http://kisswedding.com
--- question about this last one. Isn't the index.html always going to exist because if I link back to my site within my own site I use the index.html extension? In fact, all my links are like that - I don't include my entire site url when i'm linking from one page to another on the site.
-
Hi Susan.
I agree with Maurizio and will offer a few more details.
It is important for each web page on your site to only be accessible from a single URL. It is up to you to decide which URL you prefer, then ensure all other URLs are removed or redirected to your chosen URL.
With respect to www or non-www, it does not make any difference but is rather your choice. In this case, since you already have links to the www version and not the non-www version, I would recommend choosing the www version and sticking with it.
The most important change you need to make is on your site. You need to 301 redirect all non-www URLs to their www equivalent. If you are unsure how to make this change and have managed hosting (most small sites do) then contact your host and they can easily make the change. Once the change has been made, test it! First go to your non-www home page and make sure you are redirected. Next, go to any of your inner pages, remove the "www" from the URL and make sure you are redirected to the same page but with the "www" added to the URL.
For Google WMT, you need to verify the site first. You should not have to upload any new file or change any code, but simply click through the options and the site will likely verify. Next, choose the preferred domain as the "www" version. If you wish to be very thorough, you can log into Bing Webmaster Tools and perform the same action. Once your 301 redirect is in place, the search engines would automatically make the change anyway, but it will likely take a month for all the pages of your site to be adjusted.
For the index.html, I would recommend 301 redirecting that URL to your http://www.kisswedding.com/ url.
Lastly, please review all links on your site and ensure they all use the "www" prefix. Include any signatures, social pages (facebook, twitter, etc).

Hi
i think that is not different from wwww and without wwww but you must decide in the google webmaster tools.
and i think that you can rediret (301 permanent) with htaccess to show only one site online.
example if you decide to have http://www.kisswedding.com/ when somebody digit a url without wwww ( http://kisswedding.com) you can redirect to wwww.
So you can avoid a duplicate content
Ciao
Maurizio

Ecommerce, Product Content & Google Metrics
Hi I know Google has many different variations of what they consider to be thin content. I wondered if anyone has an idea of the best metric to determine what content you need to improve on your site? I work on a large e-commerce site so there are a thousands of product pages - all with product descriptions similar [but not duplicate] to competitors. I guess in terms of quantity, these pages don't have huge amounts of written content, so I'm wondering what Google classes as 'thin' on a product page: 1. Does Google just expect a conversion to deem that product page useful? And if not, what's the best metric to identify what works vs. what doesn't on product pages in Google's eyes. 2. If adding lots of product pages on mass is bad and will decrease overall authority? The content isn't duplicate, but may be fairly similar to other sites selling the same thing. I'm trying to get our reviews added directly to product pages rather than in a pop up to improve the unique content and I'm starting to write guides, FAQ's and I'll work towards getting video started - however, I'm the only SEO & we don't have much resource so this all takes time. If anyone else has any advice on steps to take that would be great 🙂

May last year my sites orgainic listings, and therfore visitors, plumeted. Why?
Hello, May last year my site took a major fall. I am unsure why, and it's time I found out why. Recently I have rebuilt the site from scratch, except for the urls and content, and it's starting to turn back. What is the best method to go about understanding just what caused the decline? What are the options I have? See the image for a graph of the all-time traffic. http://i.imgur.com/uL93yPj.png My website in question is: www.ditalia.com.au Thanks. uL93yPj.png

Google Analytics Site Search to new sub-domain
Hi Mozzers, I'm setting up Google's Site Search on a website. However this isn't for search terms, this will be for people filling in a form and using the POST action to land on a results page. This is similar to what is outlined at http://support.google.com/analytics/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1012264 ('<a class="zippy zippy-collapse">Setting Up Site Search for POST-Based Search Engines').</a> However my approach is different as my results appear on a sub-domain of the top level domain. Eg.. user is on www.domain.com/page.php user fills in form submits user gets taken to results.domain.com/results.php The issue is with the suggested code provided by Google as copied below.. Firstly, I don't use query strings on my results page so I would have to create an artificial page which shouldn't be a problem. But what I don't know is how the tracking will work across a sub-domain without the _gaq.push(['_setDomainName', '.domain.com']); code. Can this be added in? Can I also add Custom Variables? Does anyone have experience of using Site Search across a sub-domain perhaps to track quote form values? Many thanks!

What extra shall we do to increase organic traffic for both the sites?
One of my clients has english language websites targeted for USA and UK audience with some content variations but60%-70% of the content on site remains the same. The site is hosted in USA. One is hosted on brandname.co.uk and one is on brandname.com. The precuations that we have already taken to save it from being marked duplicates are: 1. used rel=alternate element for all product detail pages2. currency in both the sites are different that is GBP and USD3. have tried to differenttate the product by using different product specific terms like Publishing Year: vis a vis published in:Author Vis a vis Written byFormat vis a vis binding type Add to cart vis a vis add to basket and so on What remains the same: 1. Title structure 2. Description 3. Product Name 4. About the product text

Site speed not being reported accurately?
We're constantly on the lookout for site speed, and Google's Webmaster tools are saying that we're really really slow (on the order of 5-15 seconds per page). But the site NEVER feels that slow, and lots of other tools say we're in the 3-5 second range. Further, we've implemented literally 100% of Google's suggestions, and all we have are ad units that now render using Googles Async ad loader, further reducing time to interactivity. Could Google be dinging us in search results for this? Here's an example page that they said loaded in 200+ seconds (!?!) http://hark.com/clips/kwkdqqtzsg-terran-nuclear-launch-detected Thanks!

Something strange going on with new client's site...
Please forgive my stupidity if there is something obvious here which I have missed (I keep assuming that must be the case), but any advice on this would be much appreciated. We've just acquired a new client. Despite having a site for plenty of time now they did not previously have analytics with their last company (I know, a crime!). They've been with us for about a month now and we've managed to get them some great rankings already. To be fair, the rankings weren't bad before us either. Anyway. They have multiple position one rankings for well searched terms both locally and nationally. One would assume therefore that a lot of their traffic would come from Google right? Not according to their analytics. In fact, very little of it does... instead, 70% of their average 3,000 visits per month comes from just one referring site. A framed version of their site which is through reachlocal, which itself doesn't rank for any of their terms. I don't get it... The URL of the site is: www.namgrass.co.uk (ignore there being a .com too, that's a portal as they cover other countries). The referring site causing me all this confusion is: http://namgrass.rtrk.co.uk/ (see source code at the bottom for the reachlocal thing). Now I know reach local certainly isn't sending them all that traffic, so why does GA say it is... and what is this reachlocal thing anyway?? I mean, I know what reachlocal is, but what gives here with regards to it? Any ideas, please??

Setting up Google Analytic Goals to a 3rd Party Site
I recently received help on a question I asked on SEOmoz but need additional clarification. I am trying to set up goals in Google Analytics for people who click on a “purchase botton” which sends them to PayPal. I created a Thank You page and tried to get PayPal to redirect to it, however, our customers only get to our site’s 404 page. Here is what I’ve done so far: Went into my PayPal account and turned the “Auto Return” to ‘on’ Under website payment preferences, I added the following URL http://www.teecycle.org/thank-youutm_nooverride1. (I formatted the URL this way because the person who provided me with help recommended using the format ?UTM_nooverride=1. However, our CMS system won’t allow “?” or “=”)
