Canonical to another website?
-
I've recently noticed in my adwords campaigns that using exact match domains improves my quality scores so I've been snatching up all kinds of domains which include different keywords. On these new sites (which I only use to bring down my CPC) I've been tossing up a landing page, scraping some content form my main site and direct a canonical tag to my organic site so google doesnt penalize me for duplcant content. It is ok to use a canonicle to an outside website and Is there any precautions when doing this? I just want to be sure I'm not hurting my main site where we rank well organicly on and I was also wondering if any of these sub sites which also have links to my main site carry any vaue. Appreciate any feedback! -Cliff

I tested your site with the Bing SEO Toolkit, and it does not bring up a violation as it used to, so you can say that neither Bing or Google have a problem iwth cross domain canonical
-
So cross canonical is reasonably acceptable do you think links that point to the other website have any value since there is a canonical or are they disregarded? Hopefully they're not treated as spam. Using the exact phrase domain has brought down my CPC nearly 50% I'm wanting to add another 20 or so domains in the same fashion. Thank you! -Cliff

The souce is the Bing SEO Toolkit.
The site is mine, I add the violations as i find them, but it is hard to notice if they expire. I have been meaning to set up a test since I heard that google stated allowing cross domain canonicals.
The main reason i have them is for content.
If cliff sets one up. ill test it to make sure, if not ill set up my own test and remove it from the database, i will add a dates, good idea, I may even have them in the database already. that at least will show me that i have not picked one up for a while.

Alan, to the best of my knowledge the article you linked is not correct. It has been reported that Bing does support the cross domain canonical. http://www.seomoz.org/q/does-bing-support-cross-domain-canonical-tags
I like most of the setup of your article but if I can share two feedback items:
1. There is not date stamp on the article. Personally I disregard any SEO information without a date stamp. In my experience 100% of quality sites offer the date stamp.
2. There is no link to or mention of the source.
I could always be mistaken but I wanted to share the information for discussion.

google has allowed this for a few months, but bing gives an violation
http://perthseocompany.com.au/seo/reports/violation/the-canonical-url-is-in-a-different-domainBut, this may of changed also. if you set it up i can check if Bing Seo Toolkit still picks it up, so let me know the URL if you set it up

Partial Website Translation - Strategy Debate
Hi We have a travel site with over 3000 pages in English. Of these around 200 relate to products and the rest are content articles, most of which with very low traffic. Certain products and pages appeal directly to users in different languages (around 20-30 out of 200 for each language). We are debating how to go about translating these pages... If we did "oursite.com/es/product", "oursite.com/de/product", etc then users entering the site on these translated pages from Google would be limited to seeing a very cut down site, bearing in mind most speak English and would also be able to interact with our English language content we are probably losing out. Also, if we detected user language on entry, we would show effectively hide most of our product and content from users. Any suggestions or ideas about how to go about this without losing engagement/conversions/creating a mess?

Does anybody know of a reliable website phone call lead tracking service that integrates with Google Analytics?
We are trying to get more detailed data about where direct website phone calls are coming from (not just Adwords call extensions). We know there are a few services available that do this. However are there any recommendations for a reliable one? We would like to show our clients Google Analytics conversion metrics that shows incoming phone calls from different campaigns.

User Testing a Website
Hello We're soon going to be embarking on a fairly major site overhaul and while this isn't a particularly SEO related question, I’m keen to integrate user feedback quite heavily in this process and would appreciate your opinion as how best to collect this feedback. These are the kind of questions that I would like to pose: Is it clear when you visit the site, what it is that they do? What is your first thought about the site when you visit it? On the homepage, where is your eye drawn to immediately? When wishing to purchase a product, would this product page draw you into the sale? Do you get a general feeling of trustworthiness on the site? Using the series of drop downs on the homepage, please choose any product and follow the process through to the checkout. Did you feel that this was engaging throughout? Rather than yes/no answers I’d like the user to spend a good 5-10 minutes giving their detailed opinions so that we can gain some genuine inspiration on how best to improve the site. What would be the best method of collecting this data? I was thinking perhaps Amazon Mechanical Turk but the thrust of the work offered there seems to be so diverse that I’m not sure we’d get people in tune with offering the kind of detailed answers that I’d be hoping for. Thanks for your help.

Are website optimization and conversion rate optimization roughly the same thing?
This is mostly a semantics question, but I also want to check that I have a basic understanding of the two concepts. Are the two terms more or less interchangeable or are there any crucial differences? I always thought of website optimization as the complementary partner to SEO. While the ultimate goal of SEO is getting people TO your website, website optimization is focused on refining your website so that those people STAY on your website. When I think of conversion rate optimization, I'd imagine that's pretty much the same goal. Refining a website so that more people stay and ultimately convert (buy something, subscribe to a newsletter, etc). Is my understanding of one (or both) of them flawed, or is it six of one, half a dozen of the other? Thanks!

Is it Easier to rank High Authority Websites?
I have been doing SEO for several years and I know LOTS of things play into factor when it comes to rankings, but what's your thoughts on ranking pages on a high authority websites vs a fairly new website? I'm thinking about buying an old domain and building links to it, rather than continuing with my fairly new domain. Do you think I have a better chance taking this route??

Re Opening Question......Strange Visitors To Website
Ooppps, Looks like I closed this question a little early. So, I will give it another run. I paid to have some link work done...... (now I know better) Anyway, now there are several links and quite alot of traffic going to the site....... Unfortunately now my bounce is going up..... because online games really has nothing to do with Concrete Pumps and Pump Parts.... go figure. What is a logical next step to correct the problem. Thank You!
