Are keywords rankings a zero sum game for our site?
-
We’ve made pages with resources for our customers. These pages have been well received and gotten us some good traffic. But these pages only target our main keywords tangentially. If we continue to build up pages like this -- that give us traffic from our customers, but don’t directly target our main keywords -- will our target keywords -- and the pages that focus on those keywords -- suffer?
Is it a zero sum game for our web site? Does increasing rankings and pages for certain keywords mean that other keywords / pages decrease as a result?

Boxcarpress,
It would help if there were a little more info, but I will take a stab at it.
No, it is not a zero sum game. Think of each page as needing to be optimized for its keyword and then insure that the mechanism to get to it is in no more than about three clicks.
While traffic from current customers can be good: If it causes a new sale, improves customer relations, allows them to be a repeat customer, etc. If you are building other pages for keywords not impacted by your current customer traffic, it will take longer to see a result unless it is around something that is highly searched. You must be clear that you are targeting keyword terms that are relevant to your business and are the queries used by those who use the search engines.
So, If you keyword is applesauce, and current customers don't go to that for whatever reason, then you need to do keyword research around applesauce. If the best search is "how to make applesauce" in terms of your site and what people search for, you must make that page be optimized for that search: Correct title tag, url, H1, H2, etc. You must make sure the content is relevant to that search - if I want to make applesauce and land on a page with pictures of different brands of applesauce and no recipe, I am probably bouncing in 5 seconds. If you show a pot of applesauce simmering on a stove and a clear recipe beneath it, you likely have my attention.
Keep the customer pages and keep working on the others.
Hope this helps.

Keyword optimisation
I have a few questions regarding keywords that we are wanting to optimize on our site. This may be a bit basic so if this had already been answered elsewhere let me know. Question 1: How many time can I refer to the one word on different pages on the site ? Is there any rules around this? In theory the keywords we are looking to include will be relevant to these pages. **Question 2: ** Should I use different variation of the key word or is the one variant fine? Question 3: Looking at the search terms people use from google analytics to get to our site, there is a lot of people using the phrase “sliding windows New Zealand. Should I write this on the page exactly as “sliding doors New Zealand “ or is “sliding doors” fine? Its just that the former phrase doesn't really work with our communication. I look forward to your advice!

On-page optimization for closely related keywords or acronyms of keywords
We are in the process of on-page optimization for a site that sells one kind of software. We are trying to optimize each page for a target keyword and variations of the keyword, however we have more pages than keyword variation types, so I'm looking for feedback on whether the below plan would be keyword cannibalization. Examples: URL: www.domain.com/product

Tarket Keyword: device imaging software
Title Tag: Device Imaging Software | Company Name URL: www.domain.com/solutions
Target Keyword: device imaging solutions
Title Tag: Device Imaging Solutions | Company Name URL: www.domain.com/products/product-name
Target Keyword: dis (acronym)
Title Tag: DIS Software | Product Name | Company Name My question is are these keyword too closely related for each of the pages? Will they be considered duplicate title tags? Keyword cannibalization? etc. Thanks!0 -
Multilingual keyword research
Does anyone have any experience in multilingual SEO? We are looking for software that conducts research for GEO Locations such as UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan & India. Writing content for each of these countries is difficult unless we speak their language, we could look at outsourcing the translation but conducting keyword research for each location is almost impossible.

Ranks moving up & Down for a certain keyword search
Hi, We had lost rankings for certain keywords completely from google's index about 5 months ago. Recently the rank for the keyword reappeared on google. But it keeps moving up and down. One day on 26th position, next day it is on 45th position, then it comes back to 30th position. This has been going on for over a week now. What is the cause of this ? can someone shed some light on it ? Thank you
