Homepage Keywords for a Client with Multiple Services
-
We have a local client who services are very broad and there is no one service, i.e. keyword or keyword phrase, that covers all that they do. This is making it very challenging to select keywords to optimize the homepage for. Basically they do everything from engineering, surveying, planning, environmental, etc. We were thinking we would focus mainly on their most important service which is engineering and then use the other services as supporting phrases. However, this feels very diluted and there will be pages on the site for each of these services where the keywords will be targeted. Any thoughts or recommendations for this type of situation?

Thanks everyone for your input...this was very helpful and on target with what we were thinking.
-
- Make sure the individual services pages are well optimized (internally and externally). Focus on link building to those places.
- Focus on one keyword on the home page, but make mentions of the other services in the content. Build a wide array of links that mention those keywords.
- Then, use exact match keywords to link to your service specific landing page. Building relevant links to those pages.
- Make sure your most important pages have the most authority being passed to them through your web pages.
-
Perhaps there is a more generic term or longer tail keyword phrase that encompasses the type of services they offer (that has some search volume) that you could focus on the home page and then get very specific on the inside pages.
Another alternative might be to focus on the branded company name on the homepage.
Yannick offered some great ideas, too.

Choose 1.
Pick the one they make the most money on, or where they have a lot of staff members sitting on the bench, or where the competition is harder, or where the search volume is higher, or where you know the conversion rate of the keyword is higher .... or...
a combination of all that

Can service request pages be indexed for a service site?
I think there is no point in indexing service request pages for a service site. And it causes the indexing of the main pages to be done with a delay. Does anyone have experience with indexing service request pages and their results?

I understand some digital marketing companies have a list of relevant keywords that are high ranking. I'm just curious why might they need it? Could somebody care to explain why its important and an example when needed?

How long before I give up on a keyword
Making the assumption that all "controllable" factors are done correctly, and your DA and PA are competitive, is there a good rule of thumb on how long I should give a keyword before I try for a different keyword if I'm unable to break the first page on the Google's SERP?

Similar Keywords/Different Pages
My question is about my content strategy regarding keywords and page creation. For this example I will use the following keywords: "widget financing" "widget leasing" "widget loans" "thingy financing" "thingy leasing" "leasing loans" "whatchamacallit financing" "whatchamacallit leasing" "whatchamacalit loans" You get the idea. Now I have created a separate page for each of these keywords. There are about 70 keywords and their respective pages. Although all of these describe the same thing I have re-written each page. In other words I didn't use the same content and just substituted the keywords. Each page is roughly 200 to 500 words. I do rank very well for most of these keywords. I would post some of the pages from my site here but I didn't know if that is frowned on. My fear/concern is will I get in trouble in a "post Panda" world. Again, the pages rank very well I just want to be in good graces with Google going forward.
