Multiple cities/regions websites - duplicate content?

We're about to launch a second site for a different, neighbouring city in which we are going to setup a marketing campaign to target sales in that city (which will also have a separate office there as well).
We are going to have it under the same company name, but different domain name and we're going to do our best to re-write the text content as much as possible. We want to avoid Google seeing this as a duplicate site in any way, but what about:
- the business name
- the toll free number (which we would like to have same on both sites)
- the graphics/image files (which we would like to have the same on both sites)
- site structure, coding styles, other "forensic" items
- anything I might not be thinking of...
How are we best to proceed with this? What about cross-linking the sites?

We have a couple of reasons for doing multiple sites. The primary reason is that we feel that we will have better optimization for that city, as the current site has been optimized for the city that it is in (the keyword being the city). I feel that if we were to optimize the on-page content for the main site for another city that we would be diluting that city's keyword. Additionally, we use the city name in anchor text in backlinking.
The second reason is more of a business strategy reason, as we want the second office to be a separate entity open for sale as a JV opportunity for a managing partner, or possibly even franchise.
Both sites have a local telephone number.

This is an interesting scenario. Most typically, when a business opens a second office that essentially offers the same services in a neighboring city, the new content/new location will simply be added to the existent site. A new landing page for the new city will be developed, the new NAP will be added to the footer, and new content will be added over time featuring work in the new city. A new Google Place page and other new local business index listings will be created for the new physical location. So long as you aren't dealing with a ton of branches of the business, this process works just fine.
You are going a different route, building a completely different website for the new branch. So, yes, because you are offering the same services at second location, you are thinking correctly about the need to rewrite all content so it's not a duplicate of site #1.
If your businesses are local, you shouldn't be using an 800 number. If you have to, put it in an image. Local search hangs, in part, on your local area code phone numbers and these should be totally distinct for the 2 different offices.
Don't worry about the code. Millions of sites share the same code.
The images are also not a big worry...but if the two offices are so identical that you can use identical imagery for them, it again makes me wonder about the decision to build a separate site. What about shots of your unique building, staff and other features at location #2.
Finally, the big thing you're going to want to attend to is that all Local SEO is handled expertly as you roll out the new business. What you're trying to avoid is Google becoming confused about the 2 businesses and merging their data. *See again my point about the phone numbers. Make sure good local SEO hooks are part of both sites, consider using hCard or Schema and take care to be error free when you create your Google Place Page and other listings.
It should be fine if these things go well. Out of my own curiosity as a Local SEO...I would really like to know about the process then led to you deciding to build a second site. I can think of certain instances in which this would be the best choice, but more often than not, going with a single site makes sense. If you have the time, I'd like to know how you decided to go this other route.

The cross linking sites - absolutely - they refer to the same industry so that's great.
With regards to all these other things I wouldn't be worry that much.
Try to think of it as if you bought a website template from some template library - chances are, many other sites are using the same template. You can even take under consideration frameworks and complete systems like for instance Wordpress - the same scenario.
Company name is definitely not going to be of a problem either - neither will telephone number.
We have a few websites promoting our business - some point towards local traffic and some worldwide.
Our business name on all (including the content) is the same and so are telephone numbers.I think you're pretty safe as long as you've got the content re-written and meta tags at least a bit different between the sites.

Semi-duplicate content yet authoritative site
So I have 5 real estate sites. One of those sites is of course the original, and it has more/better content on most of the pages than the other sites. I used to be top ranked for all of the subdivsion names in my town. Then when I did the next 2-4 sites, I had some sites doing better than others for certain keywords, and then I have 3 of those sites that are basically the same URL structures (besides the actual domain) and they aren't getting fed very many visits. I have a couple of agents that work with me that I loaned my sites to to see if that would help since it would be a different name. My same youtube video is on each of the respective subdivision pages of my site and theirs. Also, their content is just rewritten content from mine about the same length of content. I have looked over and seen a few of my competitors who only have one site and their URL structures arent good at all, and their content isn't good at all and a good bit of their pages rank higher than my main site which is very frustrating to say the least since they are actually copy cats to my site. I sort of started the precedent of content, mapping the neighborhood, how far that subdivision is from certain landmarks, and then shot a video of each. They have pretty much done the same thing and are now ahead of me. What sort of advice could you give me? Right now, I have two sites that are almost duplicate in terms of a template and same subdivsions although I did change the content the best I could, and that site is still getting pretty good visits. I originally did it to try and dominate the first page of the SERPS and then Penguin and Panda came out and seemed to figure that game out. So now, I would still like to keep all the sites, but I'm assuming that would entail making them all unique, which seems to be tough seeing as though my town has the same subdivisions. Curious as to what the suggestions would be, as I have put a lot of time into these sites. If I post my site will it show up in the SERPS? Thanks in advance

Duplicate Content Question
We are getting ready to release an integration with another product for our app. We would like to add a landing page specifically for this integration. We would also like it to be very similar to our current home page. However, if we do this and use a lot of the same content, will this hurt our SEO due to duplicate content?

Duplicate content resulting from js redirect?
I recently created a cname (e.g. m.client-site .com) and added some js (supplied by mobile site vendor to the head which is designed to detect if the user agent is a mobi device or not. This is part of the js: var CurrentUrl = location.href var noredirect = document.location.search; if (noredirect.indexOf("no_redirect=true") < 0){ if ((navigator.userAgent.match(/(iPhone|iPod|BlackBerry|Android.*Mobile|webOS|Window Now... Webmaster Tools is indicating 2 url versions for each page on the site - for example: 1.) /content-page.html 2.) /content-page.html?no_redirect=true and resulting in duplicate page titles and meta descriptions. I am not quite adept enough at either js or htaccess to really grasp what's going on here... so an explanation of why this is occurring and how to deal with it would be appreciated!

Bi-Lingual Site: Lack of Translated Content & Duplicate Content
One of our clients has a blog with an English and Spanish version of every blog post. It's in WordPress and we're using the Q-Translate plugin. The problem is that my company is publishing blog posts in English only. The client is then responsible for having the piece translated, at which point we can add the translation to the blog. So the process is working like this: We add the post in English. We literally copy the exact same English content to the Spanish version, to serve as a placeholder until it's translated by the client. (*Question on this below) We give the Spanish page a placeholder title tag, so at least the title tags will not be duplicate in the mean time. We publish. Two pages go live with the exact same content and different title tags. A week or more later, we get the translated version of the post, and add that as the Spanish version, updating the content, links, and meta data. Our posts typically get indexed very quickly, so I'm worried that this is creating a duplicate content issue. What do you think? What we're noticing is that growth in search traffic is much flatter than it usually is after the first month of a new client blog. I'm looking for any suggestions and advice to make this process more successful for the client. *Would it be better to leave the Spanish page blank? Or add a sentence like: "This post is only available in English" with a link to the English version? Additionally, if you know of a relatively inexpensive but high-quality translation service that can turn these translations around quicker than my client can, I would love to hear about it. Thanks! Duplicate content, website authority and affiliates
We've got a dilemma at the moment with the content we supply to an affiliate. We currently supply the affiliate with our product database which includes everything about a product including the price, title, description and images. The affiliate then lists the products on their website and provides a Commission Junction link back to our ecommerce store which tracks any purchases with the affiliate getting a commission based on any sales via a cookie. This has been very successful for us in terms of sales but we've noticed a significant dip over the past year in ranking whilst the affiliate has achieved a peak...all eyes are pointing towards the Panda update. Whenever I type one of our 'uniquely written' product descriptions into Google, the affiliate website appears higher than ours suggesting Google has ranked them the authority. My question is, without writing unique content for the affiliate and changing the commission junction link. What would be the best option to be recognised as the authority of the content which we wrote in the first place? It always appears on our website first but Google seems to position the affiliate higher than us in the SERPS after a few weeks. What on-page/site optimization techniques can I utilize to improve this site (http://www.paradisus.com/)?
I use a Search Engine Spider Simulator to analyze the homepage and I think my client is using black hat tactics such as cloaking. Am I right? Any recommendations on to improve the top navigation under Resorts pull down. Each of the 6 resorts listed are all part of the Paradisus brand, but each resort has their own sub domain.

Nuanced duplicate content problem.
Hi guys, I am working on a recently rebuilt website, which has some duplicate content issues that are more nuanced than usual. I have a plan of action (which I will describe further), so please let me know if it's a valid plan or if I am missing something. Situation: The client is targeting two types of users: business leads (Type A) and potential employees (Type B), so for each of their 22 locations, they have 2 pages - one speaking to Type A and another to Type B. Type A location page contains a description of the location. In terms of importance, Type A location pages are secondary because to the Type A user, locations are not of primary importance. Type B location page contains the same description of the location plus additional lifestyle description. These pages carry more importance, since they are attempting to attract applicants to work in specific places. So I am planning to rank these pages eventually for a combination of Location Name + Keyword. Plan: New content is not an option at this point, so I am planning to set up canonical tags on both location Types and make Type B, the canonical URL, since it carries more importance and more SEO potential. The main nuance is that while Type A and Type B location pages contain some of the same content (about 75%-80%), they are not exactly the same. That is why I am not 100% sure that I should canonicalize them, but still most of the wording on the page is identical, so... Any professional opinion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
