Meta Description Question

Is it ok to put your domain name in the meta description if that is the name of your company? so if my company name is BlaBla.com and I want to have a meta description like
Shop for your next Widget at BlaBla.com. We have Widget in 30 colors. Free shipping for orders over $50.
and I am obviosuly promoting the widget page is this ok. I am concerned that Google will not like the domain name in the meta description. After Peguin I am paranoid about my shadow.....LOL

Hi John,
Let me repeat, know of no evidence of Google penalizing a site because of keyword use in the meta description tag. So including it or removing it here will most likely have little impact on your rankings, although it may impact your CTR. Having the your site name in both your title and meta description should be fine, at least from a ranking perspective.
Here's a hypothetical situation where you can get into trouble:
70% of your inbound anchor text is all the same keyword
The keyword is the first word of your title tag, and appears 2-3x
The keyword is stuffed in your body text.Yes, it's hard NOT to have your keyword as anchor text when you have an exact match domain, but there seems to be at least some evidence of Google hitting sites that have overly optimized exact match anchor text, even for branded domains. The jury is still out, but diversifying your inbound anchor text seems like a smart strategy.

Thanks Cyrus I am not sure what you mean by
"The meta description aside, anywhere your money keyword phrase is used that it can count is a place you want to be careful about."
You mean not to abuse Anchor Text ? When you domain and company name are both an EDM (a great thing to have in the past) it is hard not to use it in Anchor. I guess what you are saying is dont use mysite.com as anchor instead use My Site or Here?
Oh right now I have mysite.com in the title and in many of the meta descriptions so it sounds like I should remove it from one or the other.

As Ben said, as far as we know Google doesn't use the meta description in it's ranking algorythm in any significant way. And I haven't seen any evidence changing in light of Penguin. So if it's natural for you to include it in your meta description, I'd encourage you to do so.
That said, if your domain is an exact match and it's a keyword you use a lot, I would encourage you to be careful in other areas of over-optimization (title tag, inbound links, keyword stuffing, etc.)
The meta description aside, anywhere your money keyword phrase is used that it can count is a place you want to be careful about.
Additionally, here's a couple of my favorite articles on Penguin:

Very good points. I would like the company name (same as domain name) to go either in the title of the description but I like your idea to put it in the Description and re-think the title for a call to action.
In some cases Google is using info from my footer instead of the Meta Description in the SERPs?
-
Google doesn't really look at the meta description anymore so I wouldn't stress about it.
Although personally I'd not include the domain name in the meta description as you're probably mentioning the brand name in the title tag and it's going to appear directly above the description in tiny green writing anyway. So why not fill your title tag with things designed to encourage a high click through? Things like "Free shipping on orders over $50. Widgets available in 30 colours including popular colour 1, popular colour 2 and popular colur 3."

I am beginning to realize that being an SEO is like being a Doctor or a Lawyer. You get to practice your entire career and people actually tolerate that behavior.

Oh and thanks for letting me know that I am not alone staring at the dark object on the floor and wonder were it took so much traffic. Until April 24th I had no idea shadows were black and white and liked the cold.
-
I guess I should also mention that the name of this company is also an Exact Domain Match (EDM) of a great key word within this industry.
So I am now afraid that if I don't take out all my references to the actually company name out of the Description I will get penalized for stuffing.
Putting the name of the company is very typical for e-commerce company.

I don't foresee this being a problem.
At all.
And I know what you mean about being scared of your own shadow

Schema description wordcount guidelines ?
Hi is there a wordcount guideline for the description field in Ravens schema creator ? according to their page on event schema an excerpt from the page will show up as a short description but then their tool has a field for adding a description! I was just adding some edited copy from the page into this but if it already pulls in an excerpt is there any need ? I take it its a good idea for better control of what's displayed in rich snippet, if so what's suggested wordcount limit ? cheers dan

Category descriptions and magento
Hi Any eCommerce experts out there, please? I run a magento store and am looking to improve the performance of my category pages in the listings, to aid this I have created category descriptions - a hundred or so words about what, for example, a Maxi Dress is, an example can be seen here http:// yochic.co.uk/dress-267864/ maxi.html (I have broken the link as not sure on the linking policy of the forum). I have noticed, however, that this category description is appearing all on sub pages of the section, so it is on page 1,2,3,4 etc. Is this likely to lead to me receiving a penalty for internal duplicate content? The store uses rel="next" in all the category pages, so shouldn't that help limit any problems caused by the duplication of the page descriptions? I notice that when I search for a sub page, 2, 3, 4 etc in Google using the url of page two http://yochic.co.uk/dress-267864/maxi.html?p=2 it returns the first page, so am i right in thinking with the tags that Google sees all the sub pages as being page one. In which case, doesn't that limit my ability to rank for the products listed on pages 2+? Long story short, the site cannot rank it's product pages because the vast majority of the product descriptions are 100% duplicate because the site is an affiliate fashion store. Many thanks Carl

Question about URLs
Hello! I have a client that wants to upload an URL like this: www.example.com/keyword/page-name.html The main problem is that www.example.com/keyword/ doesn't exist and gives a 404 error so I'd prefer not doing that...... What do you think about this? And if the client wants to go ahead, is there any solution? A 301 to the final page would help? Thank you in advance!

Downloading Meta Data
I'm about to do a site audit, and as part of it I need to download all the metadata so that I can see what is ok, and what needs to change. I've seen tools that allow you to do this a million times, and even used a few. But today for some reason I'm drawing a blank. Can someone help me please? Best case scenario, the tool is free, but I'm not opposed to paying if it's going to save me a lot of time.

Why is SEOMoz telling me that meta descriptions are missing?
We have descriptions using an Ektron CMS on a .NET platform. IT is wondering if using "meta ID" vs "meta name" is the issue? Here is an example of the HTML code: <meta http-equiv="<a class="attribute-value">Content-Language</a>" name="<a class="attribute-value">Language</a>" content="<a class="attribute-value">en</a>" /> <meta id="<a class="attribute-value">ctl00_metaTagControl1_metaKeywords</a>" name="<a class="attribute-value">Keywords</a>" content="<a class="attribute-value">hunting, fishing, outdoor, sportshooting, rodeo, off-road, hunt, fish, outdoors, community, shotgun, rifle, bass, trout, sportfishing, tarpon, ATV, television</a>">meta> <meta id="<a class="attribute-value">ctl00_metaTagControl1_metaDesc</a>" name="<a class="attribute-value">Description</a>" content="<a class="attribute-value">Deep-cranking technique lands Starks his second Elite Series victory.</a>">meta> <meta id="<a class="attribute-value">ctl00_metaTagControl1_metaSubject</a>" content="" name="<a class="attribute-value">subject</a>">meta> <meta id="<a class="attribute-value">ctl00_metaTagControl1_metaRating</a>" content="" name="<a class="attribute-value">rating</a>">meta>

Using rel="author" on product descriptions
Unique and effective product descriptions can be one of the most expensive investments that go into building a retail website. I would consider them part of the "intellectual property" of a company. These descriptions are also one of the most often pirated types of content. Some product descriptions have been grabbed and used by hundreds of pirates. When people grab your product descriptions it creates a duplicate content problem, it also starts cutting off your long-tail traffic. The discussion topic here is.... Have you heard of anyone using rel="author" on product pages with substantive content? Do you think there is any value in doing that? Is this an abuse of rel="author" Thank you!

Missing meta descriptions on indexed pages, portfolio, tags, author and archive pages. I am using SEO all in one, any advice?
I am having a few problems that I can't seem to work out.....I am fairly new to this and can't seem to work out the following: Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙂 1. I am missing alot of meta description tags. I have installed "All in One SEO" but there seems to be no options to add meta descriptions in portfolio posts. I have also written meta descriptions for 'tags' and whilst I can see them in WP they don't seem to be activated. 2. The blog has pages indexed by WP- called Part 2 (/page/2), Part 3 (/page/3) etc. How do I solve this issue of meta descriptions and indexed pages? 3. There is also a page for myself, the author, that has multiple indexes for all the blog posts I have written, and I can't edit these archives to add meta descriptions. This also applies to the month archives for the blog. 4. Also, SEOmoz tells me that I have too many links on my blog page (also indexed) and their consequent tags. This also applies to the author pages (myself ). How do I fix this? Thanks for your help 🙂 Regards Nadia
