301 Re Direct Question for www
-
Can smeone check this code to make sure it is right so thaqt my site uses www always.
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^exercisebiology.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.exercisebiology.com/$1 [R=301,L]
I had the hostgators customer service personnel perform this. But I cannot get it to redirect. But he says it works.
-
Yea That's what I think.
I tried adding the traoling slash with 301 redirecet, but it didn't work.
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(.)/$ RewriteRule ^(.)$ http://www.exercisebiology.com/$1/ [L,R=301]This was the code I used. Can you tell me what is wrong please?

Does your site use the "index.php" version of the page with parameters to handle logins? In that case, you can't 301-redirect the page across the board. You'd have to do it selectively (only for the version with no parameters), and that's going to take custom-coding. You'd probably be better off with a canonical tag, in that situation - it would keep Google from indexing the variants (including the login pages, which have no search value).
-
Thanks!
1. Can you show me how to do a redirect for for http://www.exercisebiology.comto http://www.exercisebiology.com/ I want to add the trailing slash.
2. Also how to redirect from http://www.exercisebiology.com/index.php
to http://www.exercisebiology.com/.
When I tried to redirect the index.php last time, I couldn't login to the forums. Everytime when someone tries to login to my forums, it takes them the to the home page. I did it through the hostgator CP. I am thinking someone could help me here.
Thank you so much!

I see you have canonical tags in place. Considering that, I would suggest you are good. No need to setup any of those redirects. Canonical tags are in essence sort of 301's anyways, so you are all set.

Thank you. Worked like a charm.
Since we are on the topic, do you know how I can put a redirect for these pages: For every article, I have a few of these duplicate titles. I removed the pagination tags so it wont give out any more P's and N's But I am guessing I should do redirect. Should I ? **Here is an example of one article and the URL's with page numbers. **
/index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/
/index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/N12/
/index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/N1564/
/index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/N1568/

Try this in the .htaccess file. It should work fine for sure.
You don't need to manually add your website name.<code class="htaccess" title="in your .htaccess file">RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]</code>

Removing Multiple 301 Redirects
During my last redesign (and migration to Drupal) some of the updated SEO friendly url's on the new site were misspelled. Rather than updating the 301 redirects to point to the correct page the developer just added an additional 301 redirect. So it was redirected like this website.com/oldpage (301 to) website.com/new-paige (301 to) website.com/new-page Instead of website.com/oldpage (301 to) website.com/new-page I'll be finishing another redesign and updating to https soon, should I remove the redirect to the misspelled domain and just have one 301 from the original page? These multiple redirects have been up for over a year. Thanks for any specific advice!

"non-WWW" vs "WWW" in Google SERPS and Lost Back Link Connection
A Screaming Frog report indicates that Google is indexing a client's site for both: www and non-www URLs. To me this means that Google is seeing both URLs as different even though the page content is identical. The client has not set up a preferred URL in GWMTs. Google says to do a 301 redirect from the non-preferred domain to the preferred version but I believe there is a way to do this in HTTP Access and an easier solution than canonical.

https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/44231?hl=en GWMTs also shows that over the past few months this client has lost more than half of their backlinks. (But there are no penalties and the client swears they haven't done anything to be blacklisted in this regard. I'm curious as to whether Google figured out that the entire site was in their index under both "www" and "non-www" and therefore discounted half of the links. Has anyone seen evidence of Google discounting links (both external and internal) due to duplicate content? Thanks for your feedback. Rosemary0 -
301 redirects without .htaccess
I have a client that recently moved from an old ZenCart e-commerce site to Volusion. The domain name did not change. We need to redirect a bunch of the old URLs; however, Volusion's redirect tool does not work for URLS with "?" . The old ZenCart structure is: http://www.mydomain.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=563 Volusion is a hosted platform and we do not have access to the .htaccess file. Any suggestions on a workaround? Thanks!Nancy <colgroup><col width="960"></colgroup>

Versions of same site with www, no www, ww, and w
It's just come to light that a couple of our clients have both www. and no www versions of their site, with no 301 in place. That's all fine, we're (trying) to get them to sort it. But, strangely, one of our clients not only has the www. and no www, but they also have ww., and w. - all showing their site as normal - the only difference being that the www. and no www are both PR 3 while all other versions are N/A. Does anyone have any idea what's going on/if it's a problem? Thanks very much 🙂

Where to put 301 redirects in Magento?
I will be changing the URL structure in a magento store from "base/category/subcategory/product" to "base/product" which means i have to make over 1000 URL 301 redirects so our old links still work. Should i put the redirects in a .htaccess file so they stay intact no matter what or should i just put them in with all the other rewrites (in Magento 's URL rewrite manager)? Thanks

Right redirect to transfer juice www, no-www and website movement
Hi here is my problem, I have a website which works both with www. and without www; Now I want to optimize it and transfer it to another new domain along with the link juice of both the old domain with www and without www. I don't want to do it with multiple redirects but with just one clean redirect (I know that search engines don't like that, am I right?). What should I write in the .htaccess of the old domain and in the one of the new domain? To summarize I want something like that: www.oldsite.com/anyfile.html>301>www.newsite.com/anyfile.html oldsite.com/anyfile.html>301>www.newsite.com/anyfile.html newsite.com/anyfile.html>301?>www.newsite.com/anyfile.html Thanks

Question about an older more obsolete site
I have a website that I don't use much anymore but it ranks on the first page for one of my main keywords. I am using another few websites in different niches right now that are doing better and are more functional. It may cost around 1,300 or so to get the website that I don't use anymore, to look and function in the new ways of the internet. Would you suggest that I: Do a site redesign (which is more difficult because to make the site do what I want it needs to be out of a wordpress theme) or 301 redirect the site to another one of my sites? Would it make sense to do a 301? The domain is 5 years old but doesn't bring in any leads anymore because it would take a redesign for that to happen. How can I still benefit from the SEO that I have done on that site? Thanks and sorry if this message is hard to follow. If I need to clear anything up please let me know.
