301 Re Direct Question for www
-
Can smeone check this code to make sure it is right so thaqt my site uses www always.
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^exercisebiology.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.exercisebiology.com/$1 [R=301,L]
I had the hostgators customer service personnel perform this. But I cannot get it to redirect. But he says it works.
-
Yea That's what I think.
I tried adding the traoling slash with 301 redirecet, but it didn't work.
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(.)/$ RewriteRule ^(.)$ http://www.exercisebiology.com/$1/ [L,R=301]This was the code I used. Can you tell me what is wrong please?

Does your site use the "index.php" version of the page with parameters to handle logins? In that case, you can't 301-redirect the page across the board. You'd have to do it selectively (only for the version with no parameters), and that's going to take custom-coding. You'd probably be better off with a canonical tag, in that situation - it would keep Google from indexing the variants (including the login pages, which have no search value).

Thanks!
1. Can you show me how to do a redirect for for http://www.exercisebiology.comto http://www.exercisebiology.com/ I want to add the trailing slash.
2. Also how to redirect from http://www.exercisebiology.com/index.php
to http://www.exercisebiology.com/.
When I tried to redirect the index.php last time, I couldn't login to the forums. Everytime when someone tries to login to my forums, it takes them the to the home page. I did it through the hostgator CP. I am thinking someone could help me here.
Thank you so much!

I see you have canonical tags in place. Considering that, I would suggest you are good. No need to setup any of those redirects. Canonical tags are in essence sort of 301's anyways, so you are all set.

Thank you. Worked like a charm.
Since we are on the topic, do you know how I can put a redirect for these pages: For every article, I have a few of these duplicate titles. I removed the pagination tags so it wont give out any more P's and N's But I am guessing I should do redirect. Should I ? **Here is an example of one article and the URL's with page numbers. **
/index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work//index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/N12//index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/N1564//index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/N1568//index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/N1572/P12//index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/N1572/P18//index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/N1572/P6//index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/N16//index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/N4/P18//index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/N4/P6//index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/N8/P12//index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/N8/P6//index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/P12/N1572//index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/P12/N8//index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/P18/N1572//index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/P18/N4//index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/P18/N8//index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/P6/N1572//index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/P6/N4//index.php/site/articles/does_testosterone_supplement_tribulus_work/P6/N8/

Try this in the .htaccess file. It should work fine for sure.
You don't need to manually add your website name.<code class="htaccess" title="in your .htaccess file">RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]</code>

301 redirect syntax for htaccess
I'm working on some htaccess redirects for a few stray pages and have come across a few different varieties of 301s that are confusing me a bit....Most sources suggest: Redirect 301 /pageA.html http://www.site.com/pageB.html or using some combination of: RewriteRule + RewriteCond + RegEx I've also found examples of: RedirectPermanent /pageA.html http://www.site.com/pageB.html I'm confused because our current htaccess file has quite a few (working) redirects that look like this: Redirect permanent /pageA.html http://www.site.com/pageB.html This syntax seems to work, but I'm yet to find another Redirect permanent in the wild, only examples of Redirect 301 or RedirectPermanent Is there any difference between these? Would I benefit at all from replacing Redirect permanent with Redirect 301?

Missing 301 redirects
I just had a developer friend call me in a panic, because they had gone live with a new site and found out (the hard way) that they had missed some pages on their 301 redirects. So the pages are appearing in Google but serving 404s. Ouch! So their question was: other than running a report for 404 errors in something like Screaming Frog, is there a way to hunt down ONLY pages serving 404s, then export to CSV so they can be redirected? Anyone got any tricks up their sleeve?

Canonical tag or 301
Hi, Our crawl report is showing duplicate content. some of the report I am clear about what to do but on others I am not. Some of the duplicate content arises with a 'theme=default' on the end of the URL. Is this version of a page necessary for people to see when they visit the site (like a theme=print page is) in which case I think we should use a canonical tag, or is it not necessary in which case we should use a 301? Thanks

Wordpress Categories and Over-Optimization Question
I would like to switch my sidebar from listing Category Name with posts listed below each- to a concise custom menu. This custom menu would list the top three products I am promoting first, and then go on to list the categories on my site. Currently it looks like this (but with 6 categories, with between 7-10 items in each - this is on EVERY page) Widgets
Technical SEO | | PrivatePartners
-Green Widget
-Blue Widget Gidwets
-Big Gidwet
-Small Gidwet I rank well in google right now, but I am concerned that changing my sidebar will result in a penalty. Maybe for over-optimizing my top three products I promote, or possibly for trying to control the flow of link juice. Can anyone chime in here who has adjusted their site structure within wordpress, and tell me what you found worked best? ** Before anyone asks**, this structure does work much better for the user. My sidebar now is massive, and is confusing even to me.0 -
301 redirect of a subdirectory
Hello! I am working on a website with the following structure: example.com/sub1/sub2/sub3. The page "example.com/sub1" does not exist (I know this is not the optimal architecture to have this be a nonexistent page). But someone might type that address, so I would like it to redirect it to example.com/sub1/sub2/sub3. I tried the following redirect: redirect 301 /sub1 http://example.com/sub1/sub2/sub3. But with this redirect in place, if I go to example.com/sub1, I get redirected to example.com/sub1/sub2/sub3/sub2/sub3 (the redirect just inserts extra subdirectories). If someone types "example.com/sub1" into a browser, I would "example.com/sub1/sub2/sub3" to come up. Is this possible? Thank you!

Basic Multi-Site Question
Newb question. We run a site in multiple cities under the same domain. Often times one city will provide content that is "syndicated" to other cites. For example, here is the master post: http://www.styleblueprint.com/food-and-entertaining/kale-salad-quick-healthy/ The content will also show up in the following domains: http://atlanta.styleblueprint.com/food-and-entertaining/kale-salad-quick-healthy/ http://birmingham.styleblueprint.com/food-and-entertaining/recipes/kale-salad-quick-healthy/ Should I be marketing the posts in Atlanta and Birmingham as "no index, no follow" for SEO purposes? Thanks in advance, Jay

Site Hosting Question
We are UK based web designers who have recently been asked to build a website for an Australian Charity. Normally we would host the website in the UK with our current hosting company, but as this is an Australian website with an .au domain I was wondering if it would be better to host it in Australia. If it is better to host it in Australia, I would appreciate if someone could give me the name of a reasonably priced hosting company. Thanks Fraser
