How to Check if a Sites Backlink Profile is Penguin Friendly?
-
Post penguin I am of course very wary about which sites I proactively solicit links from.
Here is the scenario. Let's say for example I found a blog relevant to my business sector, had good domain authority/moz rank and noticed that they accepted guest posts. Sounds great?
Well on the surface it sounds like it would be worth reaching out to the blog owner - but what if that blog had been involved in some really shady link building practices in the past and the reality is that I could end up damaging my own site by association.
Can anyone share any useful resources such as articles or tools that will help to understand how to qualify if a sites backlink profile is shady and should be avoided as a link prospect?

Hi Luia, Ryan's answered your question in terms of detecting penalties / shady link building.
I would just add that if you are going to guest post, it should be to reach the audience and less about the value of the link. Ultimately, if you can get readers to your site and interested in (and sharing) your content it's going to be much more rewarding on an ongoing basis than that single link.

Post penguin I am of course very wary about which sites I proactively solicit links from.
For the most part sites penalized for manipulative links have had specific pages penalized, not the entire site. If you are writing a new article on the site, then it should have a new URL which would not have had any manipulative links pointing towards it, so that page would not be penalized.
If you want to examine the site anyway, an easy way to check is to perform a Google search for a term you expect them to rank well for. If you are trying to earn a link from SEOmoz you can search google.com for "seo tools" and you will notice the site ranking in position 3 (Rand? What's up with that? If you are the best seo tool provider shouldn't you rank as #1?)
You can also check the site's backlink profile in OSE. If you examine the top 50 links and most offer anchor text, especially if it is the same anchor text repeated, that is a warning sign.
Now that I addressed your question directly, I would also share none of the above really matters. Ideally you should be posting your content on your own site. If you decide to post on another site, then you are doing so to reach their audience. SEOmoz, for example, has a dedicated community. A large percentage of the community visit the site because they have the URL memorized, or bookmarked, etc. You are trying to connect with that community and even if your article had no direct search traffic, look at the numbers of followers Moz has earned (check the upper right corner). When an article is published it goes out to over 100k RSS feeds, 130k+ twitter followers, etc. That is who you should be trying to reach with a guest blog. If you are going to depend on search traffic, then the article might as well be on your own site.

Backlink Transparency with SEO Agency
Hello everyone. I recently started working with an SEO agency and today they gave me an updated keyword report which showed some increase in rankings. I was not aware that any backlinks had been created yet so I asked for a report of the links. Their response is below and I am just wondering if this is normal practice being I have not worked with any type of SEO agency yet. "

Hey Daniel, We release a small report on them which the guest blog team will do soon. We don't reveal all backlink sources unfortunately because people have tried to bother the webmasters we have and basically steal our techniques. But rest assured you will be ranking at the top of the pack with our methods 😃

Site scraped/Backlink problem?
Hi - I was looking in my Google webmaster tools because we saw a huge jump in backlinks last week. We found this one article with 84,475 total links, which obviously stands out as spam. All the links are from 1 page and 1 domain (financeai.com). This is the article on our website - http://loyalty360.org/resources/article/engaging-customer-atmosphere-at-pizza-patron and webmaster tools says all the links back to it come from this page http://financeai.com/forex/mxn/pkr/q/39665 My question is - should we/what can we do to clean this up? How does this impact our search ranking? We have had some issues with our website getting extremely slow overnight, and we believe the site scraping is really slowing down the site at points. Thanks.

I have created 5 model specific blog sites which deliver links to my core site.
I post about 500 words of unique relevant content weekly to each model blog site. Each week, seo smartlinks delivers keyword anchor text links to my core site with a 3% keyword density. I have been doing this for 3 months and my core site traffic is stagnant or slightly down. Is this a good practice since its relevant content, or am I writing for nothing? Also, am I in danger of over optimized anchor text?

Observation on Linking to other sites
Hello, I have a blog for one year now and in the overwall is going great. In all this time it was an awesome way to discovery some SEO mysterious and learn with experience wich in my point of view is the best way to do it. Now my observation is about links to other sites and what does that do. At the present I have about 35 keywords in the 3 first places in Google, bing e Yahoo. All good. I notice that the posts that I have links (dofolow) to other sites are performing better then those ones that only have internal-links. And Its curious that this change as starting to surface in Dezember of 2011. Now the confusion is about the SEOmoz observation towards external links. "You should avoid having too many (roughly defined as more than 100) hyperlinks on any given page. When search engine spiders crawl the Internet they are limited by technology resources and are only able to crawl a certain number of links per webpage. In addition, search engine algorithms divide the value of some popularity metrics by the amount of links on a given page." Now hell with this observation I say. Its working for me and for now on I will actually apply this SEO strategy when Im talking about a subject in a post:) What do you guys think? Whats your experince on this? Regards, Pedro M Pereira
