How do I get the best from our Blog and build quality links and drive traffic to our site?
-
We have recently setup a Wordpress focused blog (blog.towelsrus.co.uk) which is very much work in progress.
Because of financial constraints we had to host this on a separate sub domain.
I need to get to grips with blogs is new to me (only been doing SEO this for 3 months now) and have have read may posts on the forums here that this is one of the best ways to build links and engage the audience.
How do I go about getting people to read my blog, and should I use this to pull in traffic on keywords we cannot through the main site or should i use this to re-enforce and build traction on those keywords we are trying to rank for on the main site?

Hi Oleg
Sorry I did not respond sooner. I missed your reply!
Those site are really useful. We are going to get some nice articles written up that we can post to out blog and link a plenty back through to our main site so I will see how that goes.
Social media is something we are yet to touch and know how important is to get on with it. It will come once we have some more of the main site optimised and ranking better than it currently is.

Yeah, that's a tough subject but you'll just need to get more creative.
I would go after a more general niche: Hygiene & Health.

Hi Oleg
Thanks you for your response, a great help.
The difficulty i have is finding places where i can guest post relevant content to help this. Towels aren't something that are discussed a great deal from what i have found online.
What would you do?

How do I go about getting people to read my blog
Write great content, make it easy to share, be active on social networks, find out where your customers hang out online and join them (e.g. become active in related forums, write guest blog posts for other related blogs, target customers via PPC on facebook and adwords)
should I use this to pull in traffic on keywords we cannot through the main site or should i use this to re-enforce and build traction on those keywords we are trying to rank for on the main site?
Both. Writing content will drive more traffic to your site from search engines. In addition, you should link to relevant pages on your website which would drive more traffic, sales and link juice to your main site as well. Your main site should target the high traffic, high converting keywords while your blog should try and capture all the relevant long tail keywords and funnel visitors to the money pages.

Large sites linking to us in their menu
Hello, I am digging in to our in-links in WMT and notice that we have a number of sites that link to us in their menu or every page on their site, making for hundreds of thousands of links to our site. Here is an example:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | evansluke
http://www.askthebookie.com/ (in the topmost right menu there is a link to our forums) http://www.covers.com/postingforum/ There are about a dozen or so sites that link to our homepage tens-of-thousands of times. Should I disavow them, or is this be viewed as a legitimate link? Thanks in advance for any help!0 -
A Magento site driving me crazy... any suggestion is appreciated
Hi guys, this time it's me asking for help :D. I have a client with a Magento 1.7.0.0 version site: www.mybomboniere.it I audited it, and found out tons of issues, but the one that worries me more is the fault of canonicalization, which is causing serious duplicated content problems. I'm not new to Magento, hence, the first thing I did was going to: First: Going to System > Configuration > Catalog > Search Engine Optimization and setting on "No" the Use Categories Path for Product URLs voice. Doing so I quit all the duplicated product pages. System > Configuration > Catalog > Catalog > Search Engine Optimization and setting on "yes" the voices Use Canonical Link Meta Tag For Categories and Use Canonical Link Meta Tag For Products. Doing this I should see URLs with sort parameters having the URLs without them as canonical The BIG PROBLEM is that even if I did that, I am still not seeing any rel="canonical" tag added to the code. I've tried to figure out the reason of this, but - sincerely - I cannot find one. Secondly, the client created so many categories and subcategories that - honestly - the best thing would be to start cutting some of them. But one thing is what is correct in theory, another what the client desires, and she does not desire cutting any subcategory.

That means that some risk to be a substantial duplicate of others. The correct choice should be to canonicalized the overly identical subcategories to a main one... but this is not possible using the default Magento functions. So, or using an SEO extension (but, which one is the best for Magento 1.7.0.0.? Yoast plugins seem outdated), or using a solution like the second option proposed in this post: http://www.adurolabs.com/blog/technical/how-to-add-rel-canonical-in-magento. The doubt is that the post is presenting it in case of products pages, not categories ones. Hence, is it correct also for them, or do you have others suggestions. Sorry for the long question, but any help will be much appreciated :). Ciao Gianluca0 -
Can you recover from "Unnatural links to your site—impacts links" if you remove them or have they already been discounted?
If Google has already discounted the value of the links and my rankings dropped because in the past these links passed value and now they don't. Is there any reason to remove them? If I do remove them, is there a chance of "recovery" or should I just move forward with my 8 month old blogging/content marketing campaign.

What is the best: one big site or several small ones?
Sometimes I've felt that my choice was incorrect. I know taht with a big amount of content on the same subject a bigger one is better: it’s easier to maintain, and a big number of pages is good for Google ranking, but when you have many small sites, each one focusing on a totally different subject, you can crosslink them and this will improve your rankings. Furthermore, many small sites allow you to focus in specific niches and help you rank better for different keywords. So, what is the best choice?

Google giving me only partial site links?
Hi Guys, My site is #1 ranked for the term "waiting till marriage," but Google only gives me partial site links. See "Forums - Articles - Questions - Videos" links in attached screenshot. How do I get the full, page-dominating, mini-description-having site links? Any suggestions? Note: I've got a ton of content and decent traffic, but I haven't put much time into developing back links yet. I'm a php developer, but I'm new to professional-level SEO. Any help would be hugely appreciated. Also, sorry about the inflammatory nature of the site. It's not a preachy site; it's just a support group. Hope it doesn't offend. partial-sitelinks.png

Why traffic to my link has dropped suddenly?
Hi I would like to know why the traffic for the website link http://theindustrymeasure.com/2010/07/15/rediffmail-login has dropped suddenly on google.I used to get around 5000 page views on this page and then suddenly dropped to 15-20 . The trackbacks are regular frequency of. 1 per day. is there any action which I can take to ensure that I get back my traffic. Traffic to other links are fine , only this page seems to have dropped off ever since the spam attack. As per seomoz tool I have a grade a for keyword rediffmail

Should I build links to the home page or a url containing the keyword?
I run an IT company and the company name does not contain the key word I am trying to rank on. I also have a bunch of pages with page rank that containing the actual keywords, for example: http://www.mycompanyname.com/tech-support/locations/brighton My target keyword is "Tech Support Brighton" My Home page is PR4 and my location based pages are PR3. My plan was to build 3 or 4 location pages for the locations we provide tech support for and target location based keyword Anchor text to these URL's e.g "Tech Support Brighton" and then for the home page build links that have the anchor text "Tech Support". Does this sound sane? Many Thanks, K
