Using Press Release For Promoting Linkbait?

We all know that a thinly-veiled ad masquerading as a press release is not a good link building tactic. Of course, if the press release is newsworthy, then it can generate some real publicity and honest backlinks. My question is a bit more specific - are press releases an effective way to promote linkbait to niche websites/bloggers?
Has anyone had success using press releases to promote linkbait to relevant bloggers and websites in their niche?
My gut tells me that most niche bloggers are not reading press releases on a daily basis to find story ideas. I know that outlets like the Huffington Post and TechCrunch pay attention to press releases, but I'm guessing most blogs not run by professional journalists do not. Anyone know if this is a generally true assumption?
Anyone know of a way to get a better feel for the type of bloggers that are signed up to get press releases from PRNewswire or similar services? (In other words, how do you figure out if bloggers in your target groups are signed up to get press releases?)

I could not have put it better myself you that the nail on the head. The quality press releases are the backbone of what most quality journalists write about. If I'm in the plastics business and looking for release liner and flexible packaging happens to post a story about W & H upside down building a new water cooled extruder I will most likely see it is sourced from a press release that was put out by W&H without those press releases that journalists don't really have a reliable source to base their story on.
The example I gave is a real thing that happened to me when looking at blown film extrusion lines a niche business.
I think press releases are a fantastic way to get links and source material. Check out PRWeb and pit them against newswire for pricing.

So, you're saying press releases are a good way to reach niche bloggers, if the journalists and bigger publications pick up the press release and the bloggers see it there?

I do agree with you I have seen mixed results when it comes to press releases being ranked at the top. However I have seen many press releases reworded or spoken about over and over again in well-known blogs or Google News. For instance I do some VC work I have found if you are really looking for an answer you will take the time to look.
I believe many of the things that we read in the big Huffington Post style sites are collected from press releases and then combined with journalistic knowledge.
I can tell you for a fact I believe press releases are a great way to get links. I use them I use guest blogging, link bait infographics & press releases to get most of my links.

Of course I'm forgetting one other big thing video Remember to only use Pro quality video like wistia or Viddler when trying to attain links.
To answer your question directly if it's niche enough yes definitely I have seen press releases rank in the top 3.

In my experience, though, press releases on press release sites are not usually ranked well on Google, even on Google News. For example, I rarely see releases on PRWeb or PrNewswire ranked at the top of Google or Google News - I usually see articles from blogs, newspapers, etc. Has your experience been different?

1st of Hi yes Presley sues are an excellent way of getting links. But only if you have quality content. I would recommend PRWeb or PRNewswire I would strongly disagree with you on the idea that niche bloggers are not reading press releases that are related to their niche. They are constantly googling their niche whatever is there they will read. The idea that most blogs are not run by professional journalists is probably correct. However most blogs that you care to have links from our run by people who either are professional journalists or they are authorities in their fields. Regardless there are not going to only get their news from one source and anything related to a niche they will hear about. If they are a quality blogger. Copybloger.com and tell me Brian is not going to search for every thing related to what he's doing.
The short answer is of course they are excellent ways of getting links but you must have the outstanding content that engages people in order for them to read it. I have used newswire and PRWeb PRWeb is little but less money but I could not tell the difference between the 2 Each did a fantastic job.

Are you ever handicapping yourself in search by using a subfolder over a new domain/website?
Hello Moz Community! We are building a separate hospital related to a single service line that is currently part of our main website. Traditionally all our hospitals are folded into one website with the same brand. Problem: Our organization's leaders want to market the new hospital as "Brand Name X" nationally, and not use our locally strong brand name at all. Therefore is the smarter long-term decision to begin building content on a new website with the new "Brand name X" even though it will take longer and be harder, than building it on our big, established website with a 60+ DA site? What I fear is our current website's DA won't matter much if people nationally are using Brand X, which isn't part of our traditional brand name? And they won't be using the traditional brand name at all. Example Scenario: We create a new hospital just focused on heart-related issues. Do we move the bulk of information for this new hospital from http://www.nebraskamed.com/heart, to a new website that will better rank with the new brand X and for just heart-related keywords? Or is it still better to try and stick with the same domain in a subfolder?

Where Should Your Company Press Releases Live
Hi there, Our company publishes press releases on the company blog and have found we were hit by an algorithm update. We have identified the press releases as being the culprit and would like to move all press releases to a company press page on the main site and title it "press room" or "press." We have a lot of media sites that visit our blog to grab the most recent releases, so they are important to the business. My question is, how should we handle the page SEO wise? Should we do a "no index" or a "no follow" on all the links? I'm curious what advice the community has on how to handle a company's press page. Thanks!!

Looking to create a Press Release - Any decent sites out there?
Hey guys, I'm wondering whether you could point me in the right direction of a reputable PR site to use? I realise that many of these sites have been devalued over recent years but I wanted to produce something for a client after they struck-up a fairly notable connection with another company in their industry. Or should I just avoid PR sites altogether? Oh, and I'd prefer them to be free if possible 🙂

Should we use one domain with product-specific sub-domains or separate domains per product?
We are resellers of 4 separate products. Currently we have numerous different websites promoting each product, not all of them use a URL which has any real link to our business - it's only when you land on the page that it contains brand images, etc. We are in the process of redesigning and rebranding, and want to know what would be the best course of action to take in terms of domain registration. This is what we have currently, for example: - www.accounts-solutions.co.uk - This site deals with the resale and support of a branded accounts package. www.software-accounts-systems.co.uk - This site deals with the resale and support of a second branded accounts product. In terms of moving forward with new domains, which are going to contain our business name, our options are as follows: - OPTION 1 - www.our-business-name.co.uk/product1/etc, www.our-business-name.co.uk/product2/etc, www.our-business-name/product3/etc where all products are given separate sub-domains within our main business page. OPTION 2 - www.our-business-name-product1.co.uk/etc, www.our-business-name-product2.co.uk/etc, www.our-business-name-product3.co.uk/etc where each product we resell is given it's own separate domain entirely. Does anyone think one direction over another would give any benefits in terms of SEO, or would it not matter as long as each site was well optimised with a solid content and social strategy? My initial preference is for the first option, if only because of the continuity in terms of having one main company website with each product listed in sub-domains. Each landing page would obviously be optimised for each specific product/keyword, etc. so, from a user point of view, there shouldn't be any confusion between separate products. Also, would it be recommended to install 301 redirects from our existing www.accounts-solutions.co.uk, etc pages to the relevant new sites? Thanks, John

No Domain Link In Press Release, What About Yelp?
Hi Moz, I understand that using a PR for SEO benefit is old-school, black hat, and largely outlawed by Google. We are simply trying to get our name pushed further into the local market, i.e., using a press release for it's natural intention. Our company offers free quotes through our site and the scheduling of jobs with new clients is largely done online. I think it seems silly NOT to have a link to our URL in the press release, but rather than poke Google, we're fine omitting it. However, would linking our Yelp near the end be a big deal? Yelp no-follows their URLs back to the company site so there isn't a risk with pumping up a support link through PR and we can provide SOME clickable link to our information. Thoughts?

Using keywords instead of brand name on G+ to rank for local terms.
I noticed something this morning, when performing a search on Google UK for "Intensive driving courses southend" the first position is awarded to a driving school that is using exact match keywords instead of brand name on their G+ page to rank for local terms. See this for yourself here: https://www.google.co.uk/#q=intensive+driving+courses+southend Until then, my site had held position 1 for this term for well over a year. Every gut instinct I have tells me that this will not work forever and its not something I should implement, however I'm interested to hear if anyone else is using this tactic, and how its working for them? How can I compete with this "grey hat" tactic?

Questions about Press Releases
Are sites such as Marketwire, PRWeb, PRnewswire, BusinessWire, e-Releases and PitchEngine good for editorial back links? Also, if I have a press release on PRWeb, for example, can I have the EXACT same one on Martketwire, etc or do I need to worry about duplicate content?
