When to write long content on a general informational keyword: Ecommerce
-
Hello,
Say you sell barbecue grills. When would it be appropriate to write a "Complete guide to Barbecuing" that offers everything: background, recipes, statistics, products, etc? The barbecue niche actually is better suited for a complete guide than my client's niche.
My client doesn't sell barbecue grills but he is in a niche that doesn't have hardly any traffic to specific information.
He's thinking of writing an article about the most general keyword directly in his niche, "A Complete Guide to X". Right now his Ecommerce home page is on page 17 for this keyword, it's competitive, and last year G Analytics showed 700 page views while on page 17. It would cover a lot more information than the barbecue example with heavy authority as competition.
The article would be about 4000 words. There's nothing that complete out there but, again, there's a few very authoritative sources to compete against that we'd never outrank. We'd try to make it best-of-the-web.
We're looking to get natural backlinks. We might do outreach but a more specific guide might work better for outreach, which we're also writing.
Should he do this as one of his 5 articles for the site?

Then create a main "hub" page (the "Complete Guide") that links out to each of these articles, as well as to your actual product page.
This is a very good idea.
It is actually like the category pages on an information site. These can be very competitive because they are optimized for the difficult term, they often have lots of content, and they link to much deeper content elsewhere on the same site - and those pages link back.
-
I like this approach and it is something we have tried recently with the goal of being the best page available on the Internet.
There is also data that suggests longer pages tend to rank better, although it isn't clear to me if this is causation or correlation.
I recommend the article "How Content Length Affects Rankings and Conversions" if you haven't seen it on Quicksprout. There may be some good data that you can show your client to support why you should create the long guide.
-
Given people's short attention spans, I would recommend breaking the article up into a series of smaller articles such as recipes, models, cleaning, etc. That will improve the relevance of each of the articles for those keywords as well, and give you multiple pieces of content to promote via social media and other channels.
Then create a main "hub" page (the "Complete Guide") that links out to each of these articles, as well as to your actual product page. Drive links to both the content hub and to the individual articles.

Is my content being fully read by Google?
Hi mozzers, I wanted to ask you a quick question regarding Google's crawlability of webpages. We just launched a series of content pieces but I believe there's an issue.

Based on what I am seeing when I inspect the URL it looks like Google is only able to see a few titles and internal links. For instance, when I inspect one of the URLs on GSC this is the screenshot I am seeing: image.pngWhen I perform the "cache:" I barely see any content**:** image.pngVS one of our blog post image.png Would you agree with me there's a problem here? Is this related to the heavy use of JS? If so somehow I wasn't able to detect this on any of the crawling tools? Thanks!0 -
Two sites with same content
Hi Everyone, I am having two listing websites. Website A&B are marketplaces Website A approx 12k listing pages Website B : approx 2k pages from one specific brand. The entire 2k listings on website B do exist on website A with the same URL structure with just different domain name. Just header and footer change a little bit. But body is same code. The listings of website B are all partner of a specific insurance company. And this insurance company pays me to maintain their website. They also look at the traffic going into this website from organic so I cannot robot block or noindex this website. How can I be as transparent as possible with Google. My idea was to apply a canonical on website B (insurance partner website) to the same corresponding listing from website A. Which would show that the best version of the product page is on website A. So for example :www.websiteb.com/productxxx would have a canonical pointing to : www.websitea.com/productxxxwww.websiteb.com/productyyy would have a canonical pointing to www.websitea.com/productyyyAny thoughts ? Cheers

Keywords in URL: sub-directory or single layer keywords?
Hi guys, im putting together a proposal for a new site and trying to figure out if it'd be better to (A) have a keyword split across multiple directories or duplicate keywords to have the keyword hyphenated? For example, for the topic of "Christmas decor" would you use; (A) - www.domain.com/Christmas/Decor (B) - www.domain.com/Christmas/Christmas-Decor in example B the phrase 'Christmas' is duplicated which looks a little spammy, but the key term "Christmas decor" is in the URL without being broken up by directories. which is stronger? Any advice welcome! Thanks guys!

Responsive Content
At the moment we are thinking about switching to another CMS. We are discussing the use of responsive content. Our developer states that the technique uses hidden content. That is sort of cloaking. At the moment I'm searching for good information or tests with this technique but I can't find anything solid. Do you have some experience with responsive content and is it cloaking? Referring to good articles is also a plus. Looking forward to your answers!

Duplicate content, the distrubutors are copying the content of the manufacturer
Hi everybody! While I was checking all points of the Technical Site Audit Checklist 2015 (great checklist!), I found that the distrubutors of my client are copying part of the content to add it in their websites. When I take a content snippet, and put it in quotes and search for it I get four or five sites that have copied the content. They are distributors of my client. The first result is still my client (the manufacturer), but... should I recommend any action to this situation. We don't want to bother the distributors with obstacles. This situation could be a problem or is it a common situation and Google knows perfectly where the content is comming from? Any recommendation? Thank you!

Galleries and duplicate content
Hi! I am now studing a website, and I have detected that they are maybe generating duplicate content because of image galleries. When they want to show details of some of their products, they link to a gallery url
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | teconsite
something like this www.domain.com/en/gallery/slide/101 where you can find the logotype, a full image and a small description. There is a next and a prev button over the slider. The next goes to the next picture www.domain.com/en/gallery/slide/102 and so on. But the next picture is in a different URL!!!! The problem is that they are generating lots of urls with very thin content inside.
The pictures have very good resolution, and they are perfect for google images searchers, so we don't want to use the noindex tag. I thought that maybe it would be best to work with a single url with the whole gallery inside it (for example, the 6 pictures working with a slideshow in the same url ), but as the pictures are very big, the page weight would be greater than 7 Mb. If we keep the pictures working that way (different urls per picture), we will be generating duplicate content each time they want to create a gallery. What is your recommendation? Thank you!0 -
Blog Duplicate Content
Hi, I have a blog, and like most blogs I have various search options (subject matter, author, archive, etc) which produce the same content via different URLs. Should I implement the rel-canonical tag AND the meta robots tag (noindex, follow) on every page of duplicate blog content, or simply choose one or the other? What's best practice? Thanks Mozzers! Luke
