To list in paid directory or not to list in a paid directory?
-
Can anyone give a yes or no as to whether paid directory listings are any use from an SEO perspective or is money better spent elsewhere?
Thanks!

Yep, WW. We reckoned keeping it to the 3 main areas wold help from a promotional point of (at least keeping us away from the tee shirt market anyway) My DA is low so have to start somewhere so I think i'll go with the better directories and one or two of the SEOMOZ list and see how it goes. Definitely no reciprocal links ones though or I get the feeling I'll end up with a Penguin at my door!
Thanks a heap for your help, much appreciated

OK, so a wide range of clothing options cuts out the niche problem, WW delivery?
Guess it also depends on how far you are with DA already. With a newer, low DA site may well be worth it. As long as you're happy to never get a hit from it, and absorb it all into your link budget...

I'm in the wonderfully and head scratchingly competitive world of men's clothing - specifically boots, jeans and leathers...! bootsjeansandleathers.com
Basically what I seem to be seeing is that the more expensive directories with a high PR still have SEO value? Would you agree?

There's a few key directories that are mentioned time and again as supersafe, Yahoo, BOTW, DMOZ, Business plus a few others. I'd be interested to know what biz you're trying to promote. For example, I've heard (and someone can correct me please if im wrong) that the mor niche you are, the more likely you are to get buried and the less the link means - ie, if you run a B&B in Kensington, you'll be HOME>TRAVEL>ACCOMMODATION>HOTELS>EUROPE>UNITED KINGDOM>LONDON>KENSINGTON - this may be an ott example, but you get the jist.
anyone?

Directory listings for a new site and it's implications on SEO
Hi all, In classic newb style I have submitted my new site to several uk directory listings after seeing these listings used by competitors, both local and national. I chose ones with a low-spam score as shown on the Moz site explorer. Now my domain score has jumped up several places over a few days, as has my search position, but will these listings "hurt" in the future? I fully intend on chasing and gaining non-quick'n'easy links in the future for he record. Many thanks!

Is it worth to get links from startup directorys?
Hi, I have a startup that connects people with lawyers. There are a lot of directories of startups. These are legitimate directories and not like the spammy directories. Is it worth getting links from these types of directories? Let me know.

If you discount a subscription when the client links to you, does that classify as a paid link?
For example, we all subscribe to MOZ, but if we received a 25% discount on our subscription if we linked back, would that be considered by Google as a paid link, or would it be seen as a sales tool / promotion?

Business directory and rel=canonical
If a business directory is using the rel=canonical tag on the first page of results for each section, is there any value from having a link on page 2 or 3 of these sections?

How do paid directories like thomasnet.com do so well in the serps? Aren't the Panda updates supposed to be moving us away from this?
With all of the updates/changes to Google's algo, I assumed that paid listings & links like those on thomasnet.com would have less merit. Is this an incorrect assumption?

Why does Open Site Explorer list Twitter and Facebook links for one of my sites and not others
One of my sites has the nofollow backlink listed for Facebook and Twitter while 2 other sites do not. All 3 sites have had accounts for over a year. Does the amount of interactivity with the social media profiles have to do with it? I know it is a nofollow link but I was just curious as those profiles might help with the brand signal etc.
