Rel canonical tag question
-
Im trying to to fix my duplicate content problem with my catagory pages in my shopping cart.
I have read about adding a rel canonical tag to the page so it links back to the main catagory page.
So if I add a rel canonical tag to the main catagory page it will show up on every other page for that catagory like page 1 page 2 and so on and it will have the tag linking back to the main cat. That should fix it it right?
Now that being said I cant seem to add the tag invetween the head tags.
I can add it to the body where I can add content. Will the rel canonical tag work outside the head tags?
Any other ideas on this fix?
I contacted my people that host the cart to see if they have any features to help this will see what they say.

Thanks David
Im using deponet for my shopping cart. I have opened a support ticket with them and it sounds like they can setup a rel canonical tag that will work automated.
Im not sure how that works so I asked them for a little more information.
I know some shopping carts have a feature for rel canonical tags but I dont see it here.
Yes there not static pages they can change depending on how many products are in one catagory.
Thanks again for your answer.

Well if you can get the canonical tag in the head section this would certainly be preferred. It sounds obvious that you are dealing with a dynamically generated page rather than a static page or you would certainly be able to insert the tag with any average web editor.
I don't know that too many people would have ever tired this to honest with regard to placing such a tag in the body section. I'm gathering that you need the tag based on numerous results for the same product page, such as page 2, page 3 an so on right.
What type of shopping cart are you using? This can help others answer your question as they may be using the same cart and as such it might be an easy answer. If you could supply a link and/or cart type I might have more insight.

Is there a limit to the number of duplicate pages pointing to a rel='canonical ' primary?
We have a situation on twiends where a number of our 'dead' user pages have generated links for us over the years. Our options are to 404 them, 301 them to the home page, or just serve back the home page with a canonical tag. We've been 404'ing them for years, but i understand that we lose all the link juice from doing this. Correct me if I'm wrong? Our next plan would be to 301 them to the home page. Probably the best solution but our concern is if a user page is only temporarily down (under review, etc) it could be permanently removed from the index, or at least cached for a very long time. A final plan is to just serve back the home page on the old URL, with a canonical tag pointing to the home page URL. This is quick, retains most of the link juice, and allows the URL to become active again in future. The problem is that there could be 100,000's of these. Q1) Is it a problem to have 100,000 URLs pointing to a primary with a rel=canonical tag? (Problem for Google?) Q2) How long does it take a canonical duplicate page to become unique in the index again if the tag is removed? Will google recrawl it and add it back into the index? Do we need to use WMT to speed this process up? Thanks

Ref = Canonical
Does it make sense to use the Canonical statement on pages on your web site that already have the correct URL. Or, should I ask, "Does it do any harm?"

Question about Multi-national Websites
I am about to work on a multi-national site and need some more information about what I should consider regarding: content keyword research anything else My biggest question is regarding content. The company would like a UK version of the site with a different URL, but plan to keep the content essentially the same, with the exception of a few minor details. In this case, would duplicate content still be an issue? If so, any suggestions for working around this? Any strategy information on multi-national sites would be really helpful. Thank you! Erin

Site wide 301 or canonical links.
Hi guys, I'd like add code to my header file to specify www. as opposed to just http:// for the canonical links across my entire site. How can I do this? I'd like it to be site wide code that I can just add to my header.php file which is included across the site.

Duplicate Page Content Question
This article was published on fastcompany.com on March 19th. http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/164/designing-facebook It did not receive much traffic, so it was re-posted on Co.Design today (March 27th) where it has received significantly more traffic. http://www.fastcodesign.com/1669366/facebook-agrees-the-secret-to-its-future-success-is-design My question is if google will dock us for reprinting/reusing content on another site (even if it is a sister site within the same company). If they do frown on that, is there a proper way to attribute the content to the source material/site (fastcompany.com)?

Follow up on "Canonical Tag Placement - Every Page?"
But if it is like Pete said, I don't understand why e.g. SEO Moz has a Canonical Tag on this Page http://www.seomoz.org/blog/canonical-url-tag-the-most-important-advancement-in-seo-practices-since-sitemaps Which leads to the exact same page!? What is the benefit of doing so? Regards
