How would you target three synonymous phrases for the same product?

I have a site that I'm working on that sells waste oil heaters, and I'm beginning to run into an issue. As one would assume, our primary keyword phrase is "waste oil heaters" for which we're doing rather well. The issue is that there are two other phrases that are directly synonymous to our primary term that users are actively searching for (i.e. the product can accurate be called three different things). Phrases are listed below w/ phrase match search volumes
"waste oil heater" - 6600
"waste oil burner" - 2400
"waste oil furnace" - 1900
I'm not one who likes to engage in trying to "trick" anything, so I'm fairly opposed to listing all three of these in the title tag or something similar. This is being done by our competitors, but only one outranks us as this point for the primary phrase.
My initial thoughts are that we should be targeting our home page and category page for "waste oil heater(s)", and then lightly pepper our content with the use of these synonyms. Then from there we can focus on other term variations w/ our blog posts and try to vary up the anchor text coming into the site when we launch link building.
What do you guys think? Have you guys been a situation like this with three phrases describing the same product? I appreciate any feedback or advice.

If you ask me.... Waste Oil Heater is going to be used by most people for a small portable device.... Waste Oil Furnace is a larger device used to heat a structure.... Waste Oil Burner is a component part of a Waste Oil Furnace.
You could make unique photos, instructions, articles and diagrams for each. Some people will use these terms interchangeably but I view them as distinct.

We are already developing a content strategy. That isn't the issue. We know the types of content that resonate with our audience and plan on doing that. The issue is more that we're trying to determine how to target synonyms across the domain and I'm looking for feedback from folks who may have had a similar situation. Trust me, I'm not looking for some magic bullet, "one-page-fix-all" solution. If you'd read my question you would see that. Thanks.

What you need is a content strategy for your website. One post and one set of titles for a word just does cut it. You need to write some valuable content on a regular basis. In some of your articles mention "waste oil burner" and in others mention your primary and "waste oil furnace". As long as your anchor text and menu's keep your primary keyword you should not lose rank on your primary. Be creative and maybe come up with topics such as:
- Use A Waste Oil Furnace to Generate Free Heat Through Recycling
- Safely Create A Homemade Waste Oil Burner
etc etc. By producing content for both the users and the search bot your website can only grow in value and ranking.

Depends a bit on the competition and where you are already for those phrases but if you are pretty well placed then I would be inclined to approach it as you describe. Google highlights all three words when searching so they know there is a relationship there anyway. Seems to me that the heater/burner results are very similar, the furnace ones a bit different so maybe it is worth considering a title like 'waste oil heaters & furnaces' if it makes sense. Beyond that, if there are potentially small conceptual differences between the words then those sound like good fodder for blog posts which should help.

Optimizing Product Catalogs for Multiple Brick & Mortar Locations
We're working on a project for a retail client who has multiple (5+) brick and mortar store locations in a given geographical area. They're regional, so they have locations in multiple states. We're optimizing their content (coupons, events, products, etc) across their site, but we're running into the issue of ranking well for specific products in one location, but not as well (or not at all) in others. The keywords we would like to rank for generally aren't super competitive, we're dealing with commodity products in local retail markets, so in most cases, good on page optimization is enough to rank in the top couple results. We've claimed all the locations in Google places and we've deployed schema.org markup for each location that carries the item on the product page. We have specific location pages that rank well for Company name or Company Name Location, but the actual goal is to have the product page come up in each location. In the example above, we would rank #1 for "Dogwood Trees Fredericksburg VA" or just "Dogwood Trees" if the searcher is in or around Fredericksburg, on the first page for "Dogwood Trees Rocky Mt, NC", but not at all for any other locations. As these aren't heavily linked to pages, this indicates the title tag + on page content is probably our primary ranking factor, so as Google cuts the keyword relevance at the tail of the title tag, the location keywords stop helping us. What is the proper way to do this? A proposed solution we're discussing is subfolder-ing all the locations for specific location related content. For Example: My Company | Dog wood Trees - Fredericksburg, VA, Rocky Mt, NC, Rock Hill, SC…http://mycompany.com/catalog/product/dogwood-trees Becomes: My Company | Dogwood Trees - Fredericksburg, VA

Logically, it makes complete sense that a consumer in Rock Hill, SC should have the same opportunity to find the product as one in Fredericksburg, VA. In these markets, the client is probably one of maybe three possible merchants for this product within 20 miles. As I said, it's not highly competitive, they just need to show up. Two Webstites Targeting the Same Keywords
If I aquire a website in the same industry targeting the same keywords. Should I merge them into one? I understand it's a bad idea to have multiple websites promoting the same thing, but i'd like to capture the customer base of a competing website. What's everyone's thoughts? A- Merge new to main website with 301's? will google like that? B- Keep them separate? Will google like that? C- Don't bother. D- Toss the computer and get into Horticulture

What is the best way to optimize/setup a teaser "coming soon" page for a new product launch?
Within the context of a physical product launch what are some ideas around creating a /coming-soon page that "teases" the launch. Ideally I'd like to optimize a page around the product, but the client wants to try build consumer anticipation without giving too many details away. Any thoughts?

Is there a way to contact Google besides the google product forum?
Our traffic from google has dropped more than 35% and continues to fall. We have been on this forum and google's webmaster forum trying to get help. We received great advice, have waited months, but instead of our traffic improving, it has worsened. We are being penalized by google for many keywords such as trophies, trophies and awards and countless others - we were on page one previously. We filed two reconsideration requests and were told both times that there were no manual penalties. Some of our pages continue to rank well, so it is not across the board (but all of our listings went down a bit). We have made countless changes (please see below). Our busy season was from March to May and we got clobbered. Google, as most people know, is a monopoly when it comes to traffic, so we are getting killed. At first we thought it was Penquin, but it looks like we started getting killed late last year. Lots of unusual things happened - we had a large spike in traffic for two days, then lost our branded keywords, then our main keywords. Our branded keywords came back pretty quickly, but nothing else did. We have received wonderful advice and made most of the changes. We are a very reputable company and have a feeling we are being penalized for something other than spamming. For example, we have a mobile site we added late last year and a wholesale system was added around the same time. Since the date does not coincide with Penquin, we think there is some major technical driver, but have no idea what to do at this point. The webmasters have all been helpful, but nothing is working. so we had our mobile provider add the site to their robots.txt file. 3. We were told by a webmaster that their were too many
links from our search provider, so we have them put the search pages in a
robots.txt file. 4. We were told that we had too much duplicate content. This was / is true, as we have hundred of legitate products that are similar:
example trophies and certificates that are virtually the same but are
for different sports or have different colors and sizes. Still, we added more content and added no index tags to many products. We compared our % of dups to competitors and it is far less. 5. At the recommendation of another webmaster, we changed
many pages that might have been splitting traffic. 6. Another webmaster told us that too many people were
linking into our site with the same text, namely Trophy Central and that it
might have appeared we were trying to game the system somehow. We have never bought links and don't even have a webmaster although over the last 10 years have worked with programmers and seo companies (but we don't think any have done anything unusual). 7. At the suggestion of another webmaster, we have tried to
improve our link profile. For example,
we found Yahoo was not linking to our url. 8. We were told to setup a 404 page, so we did 9. We were told to ensure that all of the similar domains

How to Optimize Product Page for Better Ranking in Google?

What to do with non-existing products (removed products)?
Hello, I'm selling unique products - only one of a kind of each product.

This means that whenever a product is sold, it is removed from display. In order not to upset Google by keep removing indexed pages I created a "sold items" page which links to all of the removed products. The problem is (or maybe it's not a problem) is that I got to the point where I have more "sold items" then existing items (and the list keeps adding up). What should I do with the non-existing items?
Was I correct? ---------------------------------------- ADDED INFO --------- The way the site is built is that I have main category pages and each of them is showing a large amount of products. Most of these products got indexed by Google. Each product has its own unique URL (Products do not return...) Once a product is sold it does not come up in the product categories - I only have a general "sold items" in the footer that shows all of them (with a lot of pagination). Since the products are rapidly changing, i thought it would upset Google to have a hundred 301 redirects in each week or two. Since the products are very similar to one another (only different measurements / colors etc.), I thought of having a link from a sold Item to a similar available item so if Google will direct someone it will probably be to the available product. The problem is that the sold items are now 4 times more than the number of available items... I don't think that a store should display 2008's t-shirts on 2012... Another problem that may rise with so many products is that I'm afraid that the one type of product that is being sold much more often will take charge at the end on the entire site since I will end up with 8,000 sold items of this product, 1000 sold items of other products and 1000 available misc products... this might also start causing duplication problems as the products are quite similar. Should I stop with the "Sold" products and use 301's? Thanks0
