600+ 404 Errors: Best Practice for Redirects?
-
Hi All,
I've just checked my GWMT profile for one of my client's sites and found that there are currently over 600 404 Error notifications! This is not that surprising given that we very recently redesigned and launched their new corporate site, which previously had a ton of "junk" legacy pages.
I was wondering if it would work in terms of efficient SEO to simply apply a 301 redirect from the 404 page to our root to solve this issue?
If not what would be a good solution?
Thanks in advance for all your great advice!

Thanks, Takeshi.
As it turned out, most of the 404s would not have been passing very much juice anyway. We did decide to go ahead and hedge our bets by simply redirecting the majority of them to the root anyway and marked them as fixed in GWMT.

Want to save hours and hours of mindless repetitive coding?
Assuming you are on an Apache Linux server you will have a .htaccess file and this is where you will want to put your redirects.
I noticed in the comments one suggestion to just post a new sitemap and forget them as Google will too and this is true. So first you need to answer one question. Does any of the 600 have SEO Juice?
For those that are no, just forget them. It does not hurt SEO to have 404 except for the page that actually has the 404.
If you say they have PR and SEO value then the last thing you will want to do is let them just die off. You will want, as Mr. Young Suggested, setup a list to prioritize your links. The SEOmoz csv file is great and then filter out the not needed entries.
So you have your list and chances are that several will go to the same page and then you need to format the rewrite which is:
Options +Indexes
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^old.htm$ http://www.new.com/ [R=301,L]with the " RewriteRule ^old.htm$ http://www.new.com/ [R=301,L] being the part you rewrite for each 404 page.
As a easy fast and much better option, you can use the mass rewrite generator that you find at http://seo-website-designer.com/HtAccess-301-Redirect-Generator which will speed up your efforts a ton. Hope that helps.

Generally you should try to 301 redirect to pages that have the same or similar content to what was on there before. Try creating a list of all the 404 errors, and the sites that are linking to them. Then, you can prioritize the list based on the pagerank/page authority of the pages that are linking to those missing pages.

Did your re-design include deleting these pages? If so, then just create a new sitemap.xml and submit it to GWMT then mark it as fixed. They usually stop searching for the missing page pretty quickly...

Hello, I just had a problem my site started showing up 404 issues for all my wordpress pages and post but visually the page was loading with content but yet all pages and software including google WMT was showing the 404 issue. I never found the issue but was able to move the site into a new hosting and restore from a backup and it work. Google found the issue on Jan 27th and they remove all the pages with 404 from the index and I lost most of my top ranking I have since fix the issue and was wondering if google would restore my ranking in such a case? 301 Clean-Up - Best Practices & Procedure?
Hello Again, I have taken over managing a website for about 2 months and have fixed a whole heap of problems. Im now turning my attention to the URL rewrites as there are ALOT of them. I have fixed the most problematic offenders that were blocking products and all sorts of mischief but I now want to clean them up. The website is on Magento, and there are 240 custom URL rewrites. Question 1: Am i correct that I should edit the links on my website so that they link directly to the new page instead of utilising the re-direct for best SEO results. Question 2: If my website doesn't utilise the URL rewrite (fixed in question 1) its only purpose is to transfer link juice from any external link the page had before. If this page didnt have any external inbound links then I can delete the URL rewrite as it serves no purpose. Question 3: If Q1 and Q2 are correct, what is the quickest way to check the inbound links to a page quickly so I can make a quick decision on if i should remove the re-write. Many Thanks in advance!

Cannot work out why a bunch of urls are giving a 404 error
I have used the Crawl Diagnostic reports to greatly reduce the number of 404 errors but there is a bunch of 16 urls that were all published on the same date and have the same referrer url but I cannot see the woood for trees as to what is causing the error. **The 404 error links have the structure:**http://www.domainname.com/category/thiscategory/page/thiscategory/this-is-a-post The referrer structure is: http://www.domainname.com/category/thiscategory/page/2/ Any suggestions as to how to unravel this would be appreciated.

Client error 404
I have got a lot (100+) of 404´s. I got more the last time, so I rearranged the whole site. I even changed it from .php to .html. I have went to the web hotel to delete all of the .php files from the main server. Still, I got after yesterdays crawl 404´s on my (deleted) .php sites. There is also other links that has an error, but aren't there. Maybe those pages were there before the sites remodelling, but I don't think so because .html sites is also affected. How can this be happening?

Why would SEOMoz and GWT report 404 errors for pages that are not 404ing?
Recently, I've noticed that nearly all of the 404 errors (not soft 404) reported in GWT actually resolve to a legitimate page. This was weird, but I thought it might just be old info, so I would go through the process of checking and "mark as fixed" as necessary. However, I noticed that SEOMoz is picking up on these 404 errors in the diagnostics of the site as well, and now I'm concerned with what the problem could be. Anyone have any insight into this? Rich

301-redirect
Hi My website is fairly new and i wasnt aware of the difference btw 'website.com' and 'www.website.com' when i started up. It doesnt matter which one i use as long as i am consistent right ? Most of my ingoing links are to mainpage on 'website.com'. I have som ingoing links to 'www.website.com' but also some to 'www.website.com/brandname'. is it enough to 301-redir 'www.website.com' to 'website.com' or does it need to be done on several levels ? I need to have someone do the redirect for me - how can i check its working when its done ? Dan Lærum
