About Us in the Footer
-
For our new site we created a simple navigational footer. The development team wants to put a short "About Us" paragraph with relevant links to our products or services.
I know putting footer links for the search engines is a big no-no, but is this different because it's meant for the users convenience?
This is an image of our unfinished footer: https://www.diigo.com/item/image/3vpdp/jihw Are there any other changes we should implement?
Thanks!

Hi Rachel,
If you're planning to put an About Us description with relevant links, with the aim of driving visitors to your product pages, I would recommend you putting it somewhere above the fold instead of putting it in the footer. The footer is the last thing the user will see when visiting your website, and is probably a better place to put links which are less important.
An exception to this I can think of is if you are running a blog where the latest posts play a more important role. In that case, putting an About Us description in the footer (e.g. Copyblogger) will be wise.

Yes.
It's the first thing I read on the page that tells me what they do.
I could have gone to an "About Us" page, "Our Mission" or "Our Guarantee" page and got the same/similar or something less informative.
In the process, they're also sending their homepage authority to pages they value.
The link to the sitemap is the least helpful link in that paragraph.

Even though it's there for linking purposes only?

Hi Rachel,
The "Did You Know" paragraph does not appear to be in the footer.
I clicked on a category and a couple of products and the content is not there, so it is not run-of-site.
The footer will appear on every page of a site.
I don't have a problem at all with the "Did You Know" paragraph on the homepage.

Thanks for responding.
The other links in the footer are not in the main navigation bar on our site (Terms of service, wholesalers, about us...). But the links that we will be putting into the about us paragraph are for specific best selling products we want our users to buy that are part of our main navigation funnel.
Take a look at this site: http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/ it's a very nice site but the paragraph close to the footer comes across as a bit spammy. This is something the development team is interested in. Is this considered going against best practices?

If the links are relevant to users to navigate the site, how is that any different than the other links you show there in the footer?
I think your concern stems from when someone buys a link on another site and it is put in the footer across the site. That is a different situation and generally a no-no. That has to do with external links.

Duplicate content issues... en-gb V en-us
Hi everyone, I have a global client with lots of duplicate page issues, mainly because they have duplicate pages for US, UK and AUS... they do this because they don't offer all services in all markets, and of course, want to show local contact details for each version. What is the best way to handle this for SEO as clearly I want to rank the local pages for each country. Cheers

Google will index us, but Bing won't. Why?
Bing is crawling our site, but not indexing it, and we cannot figure out why -- plus it's being indexed fine in Google. Any ideas on what the issue with Bing might be? Here's are some details to let you know what we've already checked/established: We have 4 301’s and the rest of our site checks out We’ve already established our Robots is ok, and that we are fixing our site map/it's in fine shape We do not see anything blocking bingbot access to the site There is no varnish or any load balancers, so nothing on that end that would be blocking the access We also don't see any rules in the apache or the .htaccess config that would be blocking the access

Confused on footer links (Which are best practices for footer links on other websites?)
Hello folks, We are eCommerce web design and Development Company and we give do follow links of our website to every projects which we have done with specific keywords. So now the concern is we are seeing huge amount of back-links are being generated from single root domain for particular keyword in webmaster tools. So what should be the best way to practice this? Should we give no follow attribute to it or can use our company logo with link? LtMjHER.png

Site Ranking Ahead of Us - Why?
I don't want to give details, but a competitor's site ranks ahead of us by a spot or 2 for some of our major keywords, and we can't figure out why. We have more content indexed, we have better content (my opinion), we're better optimized, we have significantly better MozRank and Majestic rankings, we have more links, we have better links. They have a plain Jane Wordpress blog, and their pages don't even have 300 characters. They don't have any awesome links. There are plenty of other sites besides ours that should outrank them. When I am using the various tools at my disposal, I can see why a competitor outranks us. I'm not obsessing, but this one, I just don't understand. Has anyone had this experience?

Why are the bots still picking up so many links on our page despite us adding nofollow?
We have been working to reduce our on-page links issue. On a particular type of page the problem arose because we automatically link out to relevant content. When we added nofollows to this content it resolved the issue for some but not all and we can't figure out why is was not successful for every one. Can you see any issues? Example of a page where nofollow did not work for... http://www.andor.com/learning-academy/4-5d-microscopy-an-overview-of-andor's-solutions-for-4-5d-microscopy

We have duplicate page titles on the footer menu section of our site. Is this considered spammy?
When our new site was in development stages our digital agency convinced me that we should have duplicate menu links in the footer section of the site. The general justification being that the menu links are key word relevant. I have received opposing opinion from SEO advisers indicating that these duplicate menu links could be considered 'spammy'. I would appreciate some views on this please

4 websites on same IP crosslinking in footer
Hello, we have 3 separate websites and domains. Industry directory websites Industrialdomain.com DA:62, 8yrs old Medicaldomain.com DA:45, 8yrs old and Hosptalitydomain.com DA:24, 1yr old These sites are cross linked site-wide via footer links and the sites flow a substantial amount of well converting traffic between each other. How does Google see this? Could we place the links in a better position than the footer? The links should be site-wide as we receive many deep visits to these sites from organic and PPC sources. Our traffic is down 20% post penguin, we are going through the backlinks now and weeding out some iffy links but the site has never been forum spammed or anything even close to that. One other thing is that they are linked to with anchor text type links

Duplicate Footer Content
A client I just took over is having some duplicate content issues. At the top of each page he has about 200 words of unique content. Below this is are three big tables of text that talks about his services, history, etc. This table is pulled into the middle of every page using php. So, he has the exact same three big table of text across every page. What should I do to eliminate the dup content. I thought about removing the script then just rewriting the table of text on every page... Is there a better solution? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
