Consensus on Paying to Remove Links
-
Hi all,
For discussion...
I am painstakingly working my way through a link profile, highlighting 'unnatural links' and contacting webmasters to try and get the links removed - I haven't got as far as 'disavow' or a 'Reconsideration Request'
I have found a large number (around 150) of links from http://www.bookmarks4you.com and when I have attempted to contact the site for link removals I have had a payment request in order to do so.
Now the amount being requested is low and so it may be worthwhile, however, I wondered what the consensus was with regards to this sort of demand?
I know I could simply add the links to my 'disavow list' but for the sake of a small payment, I could get rid of them much quicker!
Also, the majority of sites that I am contacting only have a contact from as opposed to an email address that I can use directly - what I am doing is taking a screen print of each contact form in order to have proof that I am actually doing the 'hard graft' as opposed to simply adding sites to a disavow list - is this a worthwhile exercise?
Many thanks
Andy

Did you see much movement with your SERPs after submitting the disavow?

Remus - thanks so much for the link. Kind of missed that video and it does make sense. Thanks

Martin S. I have used the disavow tool and submitted a reconsideration request thought that was clear from my first reply which I explain how google reacted to this?
In particular: A client contacted me recently and I removed roughly 80% of his link profile before submitting a reconsideration request. Google came back and pointed out an article from a spin blog which is not your regular wordpress spam crap rather a very high reputable authoritative site.

Anyone out their actually used the disavow tool? A lot of SEO's on Moz recommend it as a (last resort) solution but don't seem to have actually submitted a disavow and documented what happened next.
Anyone?

Hi Yiannis,
I did not say they will be blacklisted. But they will have consequences for sure.
Listen to Matt Cutts video about the disavow tool, starting with min 6.20:

Noone suffers if you use the disavow link. Because you disavow a web site that doesnt mean that google blacklists it. Not as far as I know at least. Got a source confirming this?

Hi Andy,
You do not have to pay the webmasters to remove the links.
Here is a detailed article that could help you:
Google: Don't Pay The Link Mobster For Link Removals, Just Disavow Them
On the long term they will suffer if you use the dissavow tool, so it's in their interest also. The more people will use it against them the worse it will be for them!

Hello Andy,
To my experience if the amount is low there is no harm in paying them to remove the links, in the end of the day they will do some admin work and noone wants to work for free (plus they didnt put your links there - you or your SEO guy did). Google wants to see that you are doing effort in getting rid of all the spammy links and they expect that some people would ask money. make sure you include this to your reconsideration request document, at least I did.
A quick advise. Make sure you remove EVERYTHING that is spammy. That includes even one single article you spinned. Once you submit the reconsideration request they will dig in to see if you have any further faults.
A client contacted me recently and I removed roughly 80% of his link profile before submitting a reconsideration request. Google came back and pointed out an article from a spin blog which is not your regular wordpress spam crap rather a very high reputable authoritative site. While other people hosting articles do not have a "link warning" or "manual penalty" Google still says it should be removed.
Best of luck!

Un Natural Links Removal Strategy
Hi All, I want to discuss one of my strategy that i applied on my website to dilute the value of TOXIC links those are coming on my website. Issue: Poor, Spam quality links were created for the home page and some inner pages. Google considered those links Unnatural and took manual action All rankings were disappeared Strategy Deleted all landing pages those are over linked from spam websites. Created new landing pages with some modifications and new content. Because home page(index.html) was also penalized by Google, i made the changes in index.html and put no follow no index tag so that bad links value couldn't pass from index.html to other inner pages (Newly created pages and pages those were not over optimized). Created new index.php page. Give option to the user to the Enter the Website from Index.html (Default Home Page) to index.php. Blocked all bad URLs (Un Natural Links) through .htaccess file. When user or Google bot will come through those blocked URLs (Un Natural Links), server responses 403 (Access Denied). The domain for which i did above experiment is http://www.thebaildepot.com/index.php Now, i have doubts on below points: Blocking unnatural links (403, access denied) from .htaccess file will really work? No follow no index to default page and than give option to the user to navigate to newly create index.php I did this experiment around 10 days before still rankings are not coming in Google top 100.

To Many Links On Page Problem
Hello My Moz report is showing I have an error for too many links on my sitemap and blog. The links on both pages are relevant and I'm not sure if this has to be sorted out, as I would have thought Google would expect sitemaps and blogs to have lots of links. If I were to reduce the number of links how much of a positive affect would it have on my site? If any of you feel it is best practice to reduce number of links on these particular pages, do you have any suggestions on how I can tackle this? http://www.dradept.com/blog.php http://www.dradept.com/sitemap.php Thank you Christina

Best links to gain?
Hi, Just a quick one to see what peoples thoughts are regarding links. I have just gained a free link on a .gov website in the UK. In one of their offers pages, will this provide any link value or domain trust to me and what can the benefits be SEO wise from having a link on a government domain? The link is just the website url with a a few lines of text detailing our address etc... so its not got any anchor text regarding targetting one of our brands. It is equallly, less or more important to target anchor text links to specific brands or to get good high quality links from trusted sites such as the .gov one I have linking to my root domain? The website is a local council website in the UK. And was listed by a member of their staff, who only list in the offer page if your offering discount to council members etc..., so its not a spammed page or anything like that. What are peoples views on anchor text links vs domain url links? Cheers Will

Natural Link Profile, low and high value links, really?
I cant really get my head around this one. I've read a few times when building links make sure you pick up so low value links as well. So here is an example (and lets say each link takes half hour to get): I got 5 hours of link building and this is what I have managed to get with the time. 1. 10 high value links all with PA/DA 50-60+ 2. 5 high value links with PA/DA 50-60+ AND another 5 low value links with PA/DA 10-. Surely #1 beats #2 hands down?

Indirect SEO boost from links
I have 2 ecommerce sites, each with a blog. I am increasing my linkbuilding efforts, but I don't want to build too many links directly to my 2 sites over a short period of time. I have decided that I will add a certain number of links to sites/pages that are already linking to my main sites (for example, a blog post on my blog, guest post on another blog, article submission, etc.). How much of a benefit can I expect in terms of rankings? Has anyone tested this out or experimented with something like this? What are the pros and cons? I appreciate thoughtful comments.

Measurement of Link Value
Over the past few months I have encountered webmasters who claim to be using instruments far better than open site explorer but they will not disclose what they are. Are there better ways of determining the value of a link than OSE? Is "link juice" more important than page/domain authority where the link resides? Or vice-vesa. Any help understanding this would be appreciated. I do not want to offend other webmasters but I also do not want to be fooled by them either while negotiating a link exchange with them
