Google says 404s don't cause ranking drops, but what about a lot of them
-
Hello,
According to Google here, 404s don't cause rankings to go down. Our rankings are going down and we have about 50 or so 404s (though some may have been deindexed by now). We have about 300 main products and 9000 pages in general on this Ecommerce site.
There's no link equity gained by 301 redirecting the 404s. A custom 404 page has been made linking to the home page. There's nothing linking to the pages that are 404s
Provided that no more 404s are created, can I just ignore them and find the real reason our rankings are going down?

Hi Dana,
Thank you. I thought of that too but these pages aren't linked to anywhere in the site anymore so am I correct that screaming frog won't find them?
-
Hi Bob,
I use Screaming Frog for this. If you don't already have it, it's $99 very well spent. Once your site is crawled it's very easy to pull the 404s into an Excel spreadsheet and deal with them from there.
Hope that helps!
Dana

What's the best way to find the 404s in 9000 pages if they don't show up in GWT?
-
I highly agree to stewart’s statement that 404 might not affect rankings but lot of 404 will create a high bounce rate and this defiantly will increase the bounce rate which can cause the ranking drop.
When I work with clients, one of the first jobs I do is to reduce the 404’s number to minimum. It is not necessary to take it to zero but reduce it as much as you can!
-
I agree with Stewart, but it's also a tricky thing. Are you 100% positive there are no rogue links out in the www linking to any of these sites? Have you reviewed your site map are they hanging out in there? Could there be a 301 somewhere pointing to it? Not so much bounce rate I would be concerned about but usability - which is something that Google is taking a look at.
-
Per se they don't but a high bounce rate will harm your site - no one knows the extent of this but an adverse bounce rate makes up a part of the quality ranking signals (more than 200) Google uses to evaluate a site in the serps.
Therefore having several 404's can effect a bounce rate figure negatively and ultimately harm a site to a lesser or greater degree.
However, 50 I don't think is high relative to the numbers of visitors that navigate to a second page which is a postive metric - if that is the case for you I wouldn't worry. But 50 404's on a website with 200 pages is bad.

Link with Anchor to header of the page: Keyword is ranking
I saw something interesting this week. I am doing research and spec-ing out a content page we are creating and one of our competitors "office Depot" on their phone repair page create exact match keywords that lead to an anchor that took you to the header of that pages. They were ranking first for all of those keywords with little to no links Thier strategy is the more local long tail that includes "near me" Have you guys ever seen this

this is the URL: https://www.officedepot.com/a/content/customer-service/samedayrepair/ They are ranking for these keywords ( Top 3 nationally ) iphone 6 repair near me iphone 7 repair near me I am assuming that this is both due to their PA and DA authority shifting the authority to itself, but it does not make sense how they are lacking in a lot of SEO low-hanging fruits like H1/H2 keyword saturation, URL, Title Tag within this content page....Anyone up for discussing this?0 -

Why Link Spamming Website Coming on First Page Google?
As we all already know about link spamming. As per Google Guidelines Link building, Exact Keywords Anchor Link Building is dead now but i am looking most of the website coming on first page in Google doing same exact keywords linking. I think directory, article, social bookmarking, press release and other link building activity is also dead now. Matt always saying content is more important but if we will not put any keywords link in content part then how website rank in first page in Google. Can anybody explain why is website coming on first page because when i am doing same activity for quality links with higher domain authority website then we are affected in Google update.

Google authorship and multiple sites with multiple authors
Hi guys :). I am asking your help - basically I would like to know what would be the best way to set all of this up. Basically I have two main (e-commerce) sites, and a few other big web properties. What I would like to know is if it is ok to link the main sites to my real G+ account, and use alias G+ accounts for other web properties, or is that a kind of spamming? The thing is that I use a G+ account for those e-commerce sites, and would not necessarily want the other web properties to be linked to the same G+ account, as they are not really related. I do hope I was clear. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

Is Google now punishing anchor text?
Hi All, I was just wondering if Google is starting to punish anchor text links? I've noticed that one of my clients domains has slightly reduced and they have slipped a few places in rankings for a key term since. I found this bizarre as the last few links I built were both relevant and strong but I did use an anchor text? Any feedback would be useful, I'm slightly confused here?

Is Google stupid?
Why does buying links still work? I don't mean approaching an individual webmaster and cutting a deal, that seems to be nearly impossible to detect. But the huge link brokers, like Text Link Ads, Build my Rank or Linkvine, Google has to be aware of them, right? Can't they just create accounts to see the whole network, and ban the sites? Why wouldn't they just do that?
