Adwords Advice
-
Hi.
I have a few questions regarding Adwords set up. I typically follow a highly targeted model with Ad Groups consisting of a few ads and keywords.
I have a client who offers multiple services across multiple towns/cities/counties but what I want to know is the best way to structure this at campaign level.
Say they offer carpet cleaning, window cleaning and car cleaning. In cities London, Birmingham and Leeds.
Now when setting the campaign up, would I be better served to set up a Campaign at:
City Level. Eg London location settings, london keywords, london in Ad copy.
Service Level. London, Leeds & Birmingham in location setting. Ad Groups for each city with Ads aimed at each city/keywords.
Or City & Service level. Eg. London location settings. London Car Cleaning. The Ad Group, Ads, Keywords.
What is the best structure to use?
I see location as important but if I restrict settings to 1 city, am I doing myself out of some searches from regions on the border of London that might be interested in the service?
I want Ads, Keywords to be highly targeted but the best way to play it.
Thanks

I would target the three cities mentioned. As Monica puts it, you can only control targeting at the campaign level. My apologies for posting incorrect information, and saying you could at the ad group level.
-
You can't technically restrict targeting at the Ad Group level. Well, correctly anyway. If you are just using location derivative key terms you might have the correct ads showing.
At the campaign level you can tell Google to only show you ads in certain cities. That is what I would do. Set up three campaigns for the three cities and then you don't necessarily have to geo target the individual terms, you only have to geo target the wording in the ads.
-
The only reason I would suggest against going too far outside the area is people might get turned off if the ad or company does not look local.
-
I like to target a major city and then use location bid modifiers to increase/decrease the bids in the appropriate locations. If your ad copy can be generic enough and still successful, then it could save you a lot of time by targeting London and modifying the bids for successful cities in the immediately surrounding area.
If, however, those smaller cities have enough traffic then it would be best to set them up with their own campaigns to have the highest level of targeting and focused ad copy possible.
I agree with David's suggestion of setting up location specific campaigns and including the services offered as ad groups, with the addition of bid modifiers as appropriate.
-
So at campaign level, do I target UK, or the 3 cities mentioned?
-
I would set it up under locations, and have 3 separate ad groups under each for the services they provide. This will let you set the location targeting at the campaign level for each. If the town on the outskirts of each location is small enough to not be listed in the Google targeting system, then I wouldn't worry about it. Most of the small surrounding towns get grouped into the larger cities anyway. Either that, or people search using the larger city in the query because they get better results
For example:
Ad group 1.
LOCATION 1 >Service 1
Service 2
Service 3Ad group 2.
LOCATION 2 >Service 1
Service 2
Service 3Ad group 3.
LOCATION 3 >Service 1
Service 2
Service 3 -
Thanks.
From a campaign point of view, I can only set locations in their, so should I have location campaigns or service locations?
If someone in London searches and my London campaign is heavy London keywords and copy, then that must benefit over a Service campaign targeting 3 cities and only splitting them via Ad Group, Ad Text and Keywords?
But in doing so, am I restricting the power of Campaigns with small towns as locations as their viewers could live on borders or just outside and not see their ad or one closest to their location?

Generally speaking, if you setup your AdWords account to match the Site's Navigation structure, then you get a clean and manageable AdWords architecture. I almost always setup my client accounts by matching their navigation structure. If that structure is confusing, then the site's navigation structure is probably also confusing and needs to be optimized.
-
I would set up the location targeting at the city level. For example, set up an ad group that only targets one location, and has ad text directed at that location. Do this for the three areas that they serve.
This allows you to target the specific locations. If they have "city pages" (pages that are setup to target only one service/location) set up on their website, then create multiple ads based directly around that location and link back to that specific page. This will not only target the ads directly at people in that area, but also give your ads a much higher quality score due to the direct targeting. If they do not have city pages setup, either create some or link back to the page that lists the service area in a nice landing page style/conversion page layout. Pay special attention to the layout of the pages, as the pages you link back to will want to have some type of dominant conversion area or call to action.
Hope this helps!

From Adwords perspective, I don't think it matters for them, it comes down to person preference. My preference for what you have offered would be service level with adgroups and keywords for each city, that seems like it would be the easiest to manage in the future.

Best Practices: Mobile & Desktop Ad Design for Adwords?
Is it possible to have Google Adwords display different page versions according to whether an advertisement will be displayed on a mobile or desktop device? We are a commercial real estate brokerage based in New York City. Most converting website use desktop rather than mobile. We are considering advertising on Google Adwords. Is it possible to have Google serve a more elaborate form of desktop landing page but have Google serve a stripped down version to mobile users? The stripped down version would be created using Instapage. From a technical perspective how would we create a more elaborate desktop version and have Google distinguish between the two? In our experience, mobile converts much less. How much less should we bid for keywords displaying on mobile? Thanks!

IE & Edge issues with site relaunch - advice appreciated
Hi, I've been involved in a major ecommerce site relaunch, redesign and backend and have been involved in several successful ones before. On the whole things have gone great. Of course there are some minor bugs to fix, rendering issues etc but my real concern is a significant decline in conversion rate BUT only for IE and Edge users. All other major browsers conv rate has increased. Trawling through analytics and the site itself in those browsers there is no obvious sticking points e.g bounce rate has improved on all browser inc IE & Edge, no particular point in the funnel is suffering more than others, no particular page or landing page is doing much worse than others etc. it just seems like all the kpi's (except bounce) are down a little on the 2 microsoft browsers, which has a significant impact. One of the things that changed on relaunch is that we moved to https and im wondering if that might be causing an issue with IE / Edge security or privacy settings or that functionality on the site that relies on cookies is being affected, though in testing we haven't come across anything. I'd appreciate any advice or insight. Thanks, Andy

Has anyone ever used Adwords' Forwarding Numbers as a Call Tracking Service?
Hi, I was taking over a client's Adwords account from a previous agency. It appears the former agency added the Google Forwarding Number (for call tracking on call extensions) and added it to the client's website. Therefore, if anyone calls that number from the website, it would register within Adwords (just not as a conversion but as a click under "call extensions") The problem: you can't filter by phone number (the same number calling +1 would indicate spam) you can filter by device (so tablet / computer) can be considered spam generally. Questions: Anyone ever used this before? Your thoughts? Does anyone know if there is spam coming from mobile devices now-a-days? Please tell me what I'm missing. Any advice / anyone else seen this / done this? Thanks Moz Community, Cole

Help with ecommerce duplicate pages and SEO advice(magento base site)
Hi, We have a magento build site (www.mokee.eu) and are selling our own branded goods. So far it is a very limited range of products. It's 1 baby crib in 5 variations. We recently started getting more sales from the site, so I started to look a bit more into optimising our site. I rewrote item name, created better descriptions, added meta titles and description etc. and subscribed to the MOZ analytics platform to understand a bit better ways to improve things up. From what I saw we have a big issue of duplicated content because our product pages are the same and only the product colour changes, which is something google apparently doesn't like However it is important for us that each colour get referenced by google so people who search for grey cot can find a picture of our grey cot etc... Also I was thinking to create only on multi variation page with all colour but when you have only 1 product to sell it might look a bit empty on the site. 1- Do you guys have some advise on how to go round this issue? 2- Do you have any other advise for my site in particular to optimise things and actually do you think i should be worried at all with such a small catalogue? Thanks Sam

Reviewing my Adwords Strategy
Before I started working on Organic SEO, I did Adwords. Being that I am entirely self-taught with adwords, I am concerned that about what I might not know. From time to time I have looked for outside advice, but I never got very far. It seemed that I would be talking to a salesman, someone who knew less than me, or someone who was horrified that I had 7,500 tracked words. So I am presenting my methods here for comment. Each keyword I have used is placed into an exact match campaign, phrase match campaign, and broad match campaign. Exact match gets the highest bid, broad match the lowest. Every week, I cull new keywords from phrase and broad results. I also create negative keywords each week based on searches that are obviously not looking for my products. Over time, I get very few searches triggered from broad matches. Keywords are kept in ad groups that generally have less than 6 keywords. Acceptable conversion costs are decided based on product category. I have made an assumption that first position adwords results are too expensive (idiots overpay for them). I automatically reduce my bid 10% on any ad that has an average position of greater than 1.5. I automatically reduce my bid 10% on any ad that has a conversion cost greater than my target. I delete keyword that have a CTR below 1%. I generally require 300 clicks to make a determination. All ads have been endlessly split tested to the point I don’t split test them much now. I judged ads for both click through rate and conversion rate. End result: After 4 years of doing this, conversion costs are below target costs. Not sure what else I could do to improve it, but looking for ideas. Management of the system is pretty easy now, as well. Anything I am missing?

Reviews not shown on google search & seller rating extensions (adwords)
Hello, we have 2 questions, regarding reviews from rating websites. 1. Reviews on google Search We have several reviews for our website www.theprintspace.co.uk from various rating sites (e.g. qype, yelp, remotegoat, etc.). When searching for theprintspace on google, only some reviews and only some rating website are shown, most are not. For qype, for instance, we have 8 reviews, but google only indicates that we have 3. The yelp reviews (and many others) are not shown at all. According to google, it takes a maximum of 2 months for the correct number of reviews to be shown on google, but the reviews have been online for over 2 months now. Is there any way this problem can be solved, so google shows the correct number of reviews? 2. Seller rating extensions on google adwords We would like the reviews to be displayed in our google adwords as a seller rating extension. These will include the merchant star rating for advertisers that are highly rated on Google Product Search. We are setting up a google merchant account to do so. Google says: "Ratings are based on the user reviews collected by Google Product Search, which aggregates reviews from a broad base of sources across the web, including Reseller Ratings, Bizrate, ReviewCentre.com and Viewpoints." Do you know if the following rating website are in google's "base of sources" and will thus be recognised and used in google adwords as rating extensions? Yelp Qype Scoot Remotegoat viewlondon tipped Or does google only source from big e-commerce rating websites? How do we get the ratings into our adwords? Thank you for your help!
