How many keywords should each of my pages realistically be targeting?
-
Hi All,
I run a small bank's website and we're currently in the process of organising a site rebuild. Whilst this will be extensive and have many SEO factors to tick off, my concern now is to get a "realistic" number of keywords each of my pages should be targeting.
For instance for my car loan page i've done a review on moz's keyword tool and have picked 3 or 4 good keywords - but the problem is there are realistically 7-8 that would suit. Also this is based on Bing's info only.
Can anybody point me in the right direction (or have some google confirmed resource they can quote me)
Cheers as always
Dave

Personal preference Dave. Like you, I prefer the first.

Hi,
I'm not Andy but answer is you can use either of them both are absolutely fine. There is no disadvantage from an SEO perspective.
Thanks

Hi Andy,
Would you structure the page titles like:
New Car Loan | Brand Name
or
New Car Loan - Brand Name
Personally I like the first , but just want to make sure there's no disadvantage from an SEO perspective.
Cheers Mate

Thanks for the feedback gents.. appreciated

Hi Dave,
The way to do this is by targeting one primary phrase per page. The reason you do this is so you don't fall into the trap of duplication / cannibalisation, which will end up causing you issues. You don't want to end up competing with your own pages.
The way you do this is:
- Page Title - Primary phrase / keyword and Brand
- Page Content - Backing up what the page title says
This doesn't then mean you go in and spam the page, but rather add in content that supports what you want to say. Don't worry too much about getting the keyword into the page as much as possible, but you can use a range of synonyms and LSI keywords to further increase the page diversity. The more descriptive you can be, the better - but no keyword stuffing.
There is no minimum number of words you should focus on, but try and make sure you focus on page usability. If it is too long, you will bore people. Focus on big messages that will cause a thought / call to action and if you do have a lot of content, break it up into bite-size chunks that are easy to digest.
And most importantly, write for your visitors, never the search engines.

Hi David,
There is no guideline from Google on this, I would like to quote Rand here from his very old blog post but it is still very relevant.
He says "There's no hard and fast answer. The number can be as low as 1 and as high as 15 (maybe 20). You can target As many as makes sense for a visitor, a potential buyer, and those who will link."
I would like to suggest you to use for at least 2000-words when targeting competitive keywords and various long tail keywords.

Does Google understand misspellings in terms of what keywords I should optimize a page for
Hey there! This is sort of an oddball question. We do a lot of hospital websites. One client that we have spells "Orthopedics" as "Orthopaedics" which is another spelling. When I did initial keyword research the volume for Orthopedics as I expected is much higher. However when I do a test search for "Orthopaedics" it looks like I'm getting the same results and Google is highlighting in the content "orthopaedics" even though my search query was "orthopedics". What I'm wondering - is it the same thing to optimize for "orthopaedics" or is it a recommendation I should make to the client to change to "orthopedics" Thanks!

Keyword Rankings: One keyword dropped, dragging other rankings down. Possible or not?
Hey moz fans, So these week I noticed significant drop in rankings... But what caught my attention is that one specific keyword dropped 18 positions, and all the other just 1-3. Print screen: http://prntscr.com/7fb4g4 Do you think it's possible that the drop of that page, that went 18 positions down, brought the whole domain down? Or is it another cause?

Weird Page switch for a keyword in Google Rankings
Over this past weekend Google switched the page which usually showed in search results for keyword benchmarking. It went from from http://www.apqc.org/benchmarking to http://www.apqc.org/benchmarking-portal/osb. Also on Google the Rankings for the keyword 'benchmarking' sank from 15 to 47 for http://www.apqc.org/benchmarking Just looking for some theories or ideas or anyone that has had this happen to them.

Benefit of Targeting Low/No Volume Keyword Phrases
Hi Folks, I was having a discussion with a friend and colleague of mine yesterday about the pros and cons of targeting keyword phrases that have very little if any search volume. I was of the opinion that if the keyword phrases (whether they were local or not) did not have any search volume as indicated by Google's Keyword Planner tool, then they had little if any value. Would this be a correct assumption? Or is there merit to targeting these phrases in order to begin to build a picture of a sites overall subject matter and to help rank in local search? For example, say there is a phrase like 'second hand clothing slough' (just a random phrase) which has no search volume but 'second hand clothing' has 2400 visits a month, would it be worth targeting the search phrase with no volume to build a better local profile, so that if someone in Slough searches for 'second hand clothing' the site shows up for that keyword? Thanks in advance guys! Gareth

How can I fix "Too Many On Page Links"?
One of the warnings from SEO Moz says that we have "too many on page links" on a series of pages on my website. The pages it's giving me these warnings on are on my printing sample pages. I'm assuming that it's because of my left navigation. You can see an example here: http://www.3000doorhangers.com/door-hanger-design-samples/deck-and-fence-door-hanger-samples/ Any suggestions on how to fix this warning? Thanks!

Duplicate Page Title/Content Issues on Product Review Submission Pages
Hi Everyone, I'm very green to SEO. I have a Volusion-based storefront and recently decided to dedicate more time and effort into improving my online presence. Admittedly, I'm mostly a lurker in the Q&A forum but I couldn't find any pre-existing info regarding my situation. It could be out there. But again, I'm a noob... So, in my recent SEOmoz report I noticed that over 1,000 Duplicate Content Errors and Duplicate Page Title Errors have been found since my last crawl. I can see that every error is tied to a product in my inventory - specifically each product page has an option to write a review. It looks like the subsequent page where a visitor can fill out their review is the stem of the problem. All of my products are shown to have the same issue: Duplicate Page Title - Review:New Duplicate Page Content - the form is already partially filled out with the corresponding product My first question - It makes sense that a page containing a submission form would have the same title and content. But why is it being indexed, or crawled (or both for that matter) under every parameter in which it could be accessed (product A, B, C, etc)? My second question (an obvious one) - What can I do to begin to resolve this? As far as I know, I haven't touched this option included in Volusion other than to simply implement it. If I'm missing any key information, please point me in the right direction and I'll respond with any additional relevant information on my end. Many thanks in advance!

Hi Guys, Hope your all well and business is good. I have been going through and changing page titles for my site which is currently huge attracting massive amounts of traffic. However from my pro membership i have notice a lot of the rankings in Google search engine has decreased. I have been using a strategy that i read on SEOMoz which is; example Keyword | Page heading | company name Is this why? if so what is the best method? I have changed nothing else so far.
