Removing duplicated content using only the NOINDEX in large scale (80% of the website).
-
Hi everyone,
I am taking care of the large "news" website (500k pages), which got massive hit from Panda because of the duplicated content (70% was syndicated content). I recommended that all syndicated content should be removed and the website should focus on original, high quallity content.
However, this was implemented only partially. All syndicated content is set to NOINDEX (they thing that it is good for user to see standard news + original HQ content). Of course it didn't help at all. No change after months. If I would be Google, I would definitely penalize website that has 80% of the content set to NOINDEX a it is duplicated. I would consider this site "cheating" and not worthy for the user.
What do you think about this "theory"? What would you do?
Thank you for your help!
-
-
it has been almost a year now from the massive hit. after that, there were also some smaller hits
-
we are putting effort into improvements. that is quite frustrating for me, because I believe that our effort is demolished by old duplicated content (that creates 80% of the website :-))
Yeah, we will need to take care about the link-mess...
Thank you! -
-
Yeah, this strategy will be definitely part of the guidelines for the editors.
One last question: do you know some good resources I can use as an inspiration?
Thank you so much..
-
We deleted thousands of pages every few months.
Before deleting anything we identified valuable pages that continued to receive traffic from other websites or from search. These were often updated and kept on the site. Everything else was 301 redirected to the "news homepage" of the site. This was not a news site, it was a very active news section on an industry portal site.
You have set 410 for those pages and remove all internal links to them and google was ok with that?
Our goal was to avoid internal links to pages that were going to be deleted. Our internal "story recommendation" widgets would stop showing links to pages after a certain length of time. Our periodic purges were done after that length of time.
We never used hard coded links in stories to pages that were subject to being abandoned. Instead we simply linked to category pages where something relevant would always be found.
Develop a strategy for internal linking that will reduce site maintenance and focus all internal links to pages that are permanently maintained.
-
Yaikes! Will you guys still pay for it if it's removed? If so, then combining below comments with my thoughts - I'd delete it, since it's old and not time relevant.
-
Yeah, paying ... we actually pay for this content (earlier management decisions :-))
-
EGOL your insights are very appreciated :-)!
I agree with you. Makes total sense.
So you didn't experience any problems removing outdated content (or "content with no traffic value") from your website? You have set 410 for those pages and remove all internal links to them and google was ok with that?
Redirecting useless content - you mean set 301 to the most relevant page that is bringing traffic?
Thank you sir
-
But I still miss the point of paying for the content that is not accessible from SE
- "paying"?
Is my understanding right, that if I would set canonical for these duplicates, Google has no reason to show this pages in the SERP?
- correct
-
HI Dimitrii,
thank you very much for your opinion. The idea of canonical links is very interesting. We may try that in the "first" phase. But I still miss the point of paying for the content that is not accessible from SE.
Is my understanding right, that if I would set canonical for these duplicates, Google has no reason to show this pages in the SERP?
-
Just seeing the other responses. Agree with what EGOL mentions. A content audit would be even better to see if there was any value at all on those pages (GA traffic, links, etc). Odds are though that there was not any and you already killed all of it with the noindex tag in place.
-
Couple of things here.
-
If a second Panda update has not occurred since the changes that were made then you may not get credit for the noindexed content. I don't think this is "cheating" as with the noindex, it just told Google to take 350K of its pages out of the index. The noindex is one of the best ways to get your content out of Google's index.
-
If you have not spent time improving the non-syndicated content then you are missing the more important part and that is to improve the quality of the content that you have.
A side point to consider here, is your crawl budget. I am assuming that the site still internally links to these 350K pages and so users and bots will go to them and have to process etc. This is mostly a waste of time. As all of these pages are out of Google's index thanks to the noindex tag, why not take out all internal links to those pages (i.e. from sitemaps, paginated index pages, menus, internal content) so that you can have the user and Google focus on the quality content that is left over. I would then also 404/410 all those low quality pages as they are now out of Google's index and not linked internally. Why maintain the content?
-
-
Good point! News gotta be new
-
If there are 500,000 pages of "news" then a lot of that content is "history" instead of "news". Visitors are probably not consuming it. People are probably not searching for it. And actively visited pages on the site are probably not linking to it.
So, I would use analytics to determine if these "history" pages are being viewed, are pulling in much traffic, have very many links, and I would delete and redirect them if they are not important to the site any longer. This decision is best made at the page level.
For "unique content" pages that appear only on my site, I would assess them at regular intervals to determine which ones are pulling in traffic and which ones are not. Some sites place news in folders according to their publication dates and that facilitates inspecting old content for its continued value. These pages can then be abandoned and redirected once their content is stale and not being consumed. Again, this can best be done at the page level.
I used to manage a news section and every few months we would assess, delete and redirect, to keep the weight of the site as low as possible for maximum competitiveness.

Hi there.
NOINDEX !== no crawling. and surely it doesn't equal NOFOLLOW. what you probably should be looking at is canonical links.
My understanding is (and i can be completely wrong) that when you get hit by Panda for duplicate content and then try to recover, Google checks your website for the same duplicate content - it's still crawlable, all the links are still "followable", it's still scraped content, you aren't telling crawlers that you took it from somewhere else (by canonicalizing), it's just not displayed in SERPs. And yes, 80% of content being noindex probably doesn't help either.
So, I think that what you need to do is either remove that duplicate content whatsoever, or use canonical links to originals or (bad idea, but would work) block all those links in robots.txt (at least this way those pages will become uncrawlable whatsoever). All this still is unreputable techniques though, kinda like polishing the dirt.
Hope this makes sense.

Duplication content management across a subdir based multisite where subsites are projects of the main site and naturally adopt some ideas and goals from it
Hi, I have the following problem and would like which would be the best solution for it: I have a site codex21.gal that is actually part of a subdirectories based multisite (galike.net). It has a domain mapping setup, but it is hosted on a folder of galike.net multisite (galike.net/codex21). My main site (galike.net) works as a frame-brand for a series of projects aimed to promote the cultural & natural heritage of a region in NW Spain through creative projects focused on the entertainment, tourism and educational areas. The projects themselves will be a concretion (put into practice) of the general views of the brand, that acts more like a company brand. CodeX21 is one of those projects, it has its own logo, etc, and is actually like a child brand, yet more focused on a particular theme. I don't want to hide that it makes part of the GALIKE brand (in fact, I am planning to add the Galike logo to it, and a link to the main site on the menu). I will be making other projects, each of them with their own brand, hosted in subsites (subfolders) of galike.net multisites. Not all of them might have their own TLD mapped, some could simply be www.galike.net/projectname. The project codex21.gal subsite might become galike.net/codex21 if it would be better for SEO. Now, the problem is that my subsite codex21.gal re-states some principles, concepts and goals that have been defined (in other words) in the main site. Thus, there are some ideas (such as my particular vision on the possibilities of sustainable exploitation of that heritage, concepts I have developed myself as "narrative tourism" "geographical map as a non lineal story" and so on) that need to be present here and there on the subsite, since it is also philosophy of the project. BUT it seems that Google can penalise overlapping content in subdirectories based multisites, since they can seem a collection of doorways to access the same product (*) I have considered the possibility to substitute those overlapping ideas with links to the main page of the site, thought it seems unnatural from the user point of view to be brought off the page to read a piece of info that actually makes part of the project description (every other child project of Galike might have the same problem). I have considered also taking the subsite codex21 out of the network and host it as a single site in other server, but the problem of duplicated content might persist, and anyway, I should link it to my brand Galike somewhere, because that's kind of the "production house" of it. So which would be the best (white hat) strategy, from a SEO point of view, to arrange this brand-project philosophy overlapping? (*) “All the same IP address — that’s really not a problem for us. It’s really common for sites to be on the same IP address. That’s kind of the way the internet works. A lot of CDNs (content delivery networks) use the same IP address as well for different sites, and that’s also perfectly fine. I think the bigger issue that he might be running into is that all these sites are very similar. So, from our point of view, our algorithms might look at that and say “this is kind of a collection of doorway sites” — in that essentially they’re being funnelled toward the same product. The content on the sites is probably very similar. Then, from our point of view, what might happen is we will say we’ll pick one of these pages and index that and show that in the search results. That might be one variation that we could look at. In practice that wouldn’t be so problematic because one of these sites would be showing up in the search results. On the other hand, our algorithm might also be looking at this and saying this is clearly someone trying to overdo things with a collection of doorway sites and we’ll demote all of them. So what I recommend doing here is really trying to take a step back and focus on fewer sites and making those really strong, and really good and unique. So that they have unique content, unique products that they’re selling. So then you don’t have this collection of a lot of different sites that are essentially doing the same thing.” (John Mueller, Senior Webmaster Trend Analyst at Google. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1&v=kQIyk-2-wRg&feature=emb_logo)

How long before our website bounce back after Google Penalty?
One of our client websites got recently hacked. In a span of 4 days, it received random backlinks from random websites with random anchor texts. We are already in good standing for some of the keywords we are tracking and the attack got us a penalty from Google and we lost our rankings, moving out of the top 500. We already disavowed these dirty backlinks though we never really diagnosed where these came from. How long do you think our client's website will bounce back from the penalty?

Advice needed! How to clear a website of a Wordpress Spam Link Injection Google penalty?
Hi Guys, I am currently working on website that has been penalised by Google for a spam link injection. The website was hacked and 17,000 hidden links were injected. All the links have been removed and the site has subsequently been redesigned and re-built. That was the easy part 🙂 The problems comes when I look on Webmaster. Google is showing 1000's of internal spam links to the homepage and other pages within the site. These pages do not actually exist as they were cleared along with all the other spam links. I do believe though this is causing problems with the websites rankings. Certain pages are not ranking on Google and the homepage keyword rankings are fluctuating massively. I have reviewed the website's external links and these are all fine. Does anyone have any experience of this and can provide any recommendations / advice for clearing the site from Google penalty? Thanks, Duncan

Website that just got hit....Need some tips or ideas...
Hey guys, The website of the company i work hit in the PR update two days ago . A little history , the site was notice by Google about spam links around 5-6 months ago .
White Hat / Black Hat SEO | | WayneRooney
Since then there is a company that cleans all the spam links and manage all the disavow process. In the last penguin update ( about two months ago ) the site jumped like crazy in the ranking and stayed there ever since... In the last three months we create less than ten links to the site, and we have focus all our work to improve
the optimization of the site.
It should be noted that the company is investing a lot in social networks and all the work in the past 3 month are White and clean... Now, two days ago in the PR update (more or less) the site just dropped , but when i say dropped , it's 200 keys that was in page 1-2 that just want out to page 5-6-7. Like the website is gone, i never see something like this... The things that pass through my head: A lot of the links the linking to the site with high PR lost their pr and now they are worthless, but still this drop ? its to extreme.
Or that Google received the disavow and just disavow a lot of links.... Does anyone have any ideas or tips on the subject ? Thank you0 -
Indexing content behind a login
Hi, I manage a website within the pharmaceutical industry where only healthcare professionals are allowed to access the content. For this reason most of the content is behind a login. My challenge is that we have a massive amount of interesting and unique content available on the site and I want the healthcare professionals to find this via Google! At the moment if a user tries to access this content they are prompted to register / login. My question is that if I look for the Google Bot user agent and allow this to access and index the content will this be classed as cloaking? I'm assuming that it will. If so, how can I get around this? We have a number of open landing pages but we're limited to what indexable content we can have on these pages! I look forward to all of your suggestions as I'm struggling for ideas now! Thanks Steve

If Google Authorship is used for every page of your website, will it be penalized?
Hey all, I've noticed a lot of companies will implement Google Authorship on all pages of their website, ie landing pages, home pages, sub pages. I'm wondering if this will be penalized as it isn't a typical authored piece of content, like blogs, articles, press releases etc. I'm curious as I'm going to setup Google Authorship and I don't want it to be setup incorrectly for the future. Is it okay to tie each page (home page, sub pages) and not just actual authored content (blogs, articles, press releases) or will it get penalized if that occurs? Thanks and much appreciated!
