Big retailers and duplicate content
-
Hello there!
I was wondering if you guys have experience with big retailers sites fetching data via API (PDP content etc.) from another domain which is also sharing the same data with other multiple sites.
If each retailer has thousands on products, optimizing PDP content (even in batches) is quite of a cumbersome task and rel="canonical" pointing to original domain will dilute the value.
How would you approach this type of scenario?
Looking forward to read your suggestions/experiences
Thanks a lot!
Best
Sara

Apologies for the very late reply but Thank you both Billy and Everett, really appreciate your feedback, I feel better and more confident on my next steps!

Billy,
This client has product detail pages ranking #3 with content that is duplicated verbatim on multi-merchant marketplaces like Amazon? Are you able to share what those keywords are, even in a private message? I ask out of curiosity because I usually don't see that. I usually see category pages ranking. But, as you said, sometimes you can do this with long tail keywords.

Don't let Everett's comments about "picking up the crumbs" discourage you. My client isn't isn't trying to be Amazon, Home Depot, or the Manufacturer. Bouncing around in spaces 3-6 for the most common keywords in their respective space has helped them build a very nice business. For them, and for you, long tail keywords are money!
Absolutely agree that having unique reviews on your site and third party sites make a huge difference in rankings.

Chances are you're going to lose with a lesser-known brand If you have the very same content as Amazon, eBay and Walmart. If you can customize the PDP content, I suggest choosing your top products and making those pages unique. If not, you may have to stick with optimizing category pages and picking up the crumbs for PDPs, as Billy alluded to.
Having unique reviews on your site for those products makes a huge difference.

My experience is the biggest Retailers aren't necessarily penalized for having the same content as other sites. I regularly compete with Amazon, Home Depot and two other websites for the same keywords from Motorola. Typically, Motorola, Amazon, and Home Depot win those top three spots with their canned data. Motorola should win as they're the manufacturer. The rest of us are competing for the the fourth spot on the page. The smaller competitors have better and deeper content. We even have higher Moz scores but still rank lower. So if you're one of the Big Boys don't sweat it so much. If you're not, start with your best selling sku and get busy.

May Faceted Navigation via ajax #parameter cause duplicated content issues?
We are going to implement a faceted navigation for an ecommerce site of about 1000 products.

Faceted navigation is implemented via ajax/javascript which adds to the URL a large number of #parameters.
Faceted pages are canonicalizing to page without any parameters. We do not want google to index any of the faceted pages at this point. Will google include pages with #parameters in their index?
Can I tell google somehow to ignore #parameters and not to index them?
Could this setup cause any SEO problems for us in terms of crawl bandwidth and or link equity?0 -
Mixing up languages on the same page + possible duplicate content
I have a site in English hosted under .com with English info, and then different versions of the site under subdirectories (/de/, /es/, etc.) Due to budget constraints we have only managed to translate the most important info of our product pages for the local domains. We feel however that displaying (on a clearly identified tab) the detailed product info in English may be of use for many users that can actually understand English, and may help us get more conversions to have that info. The problem is that this detailed product info is already used on the equivalent English page as well. This basically means 2 things: We are mixing languages on pages We have around 50% of duplicate content of these pages What do you think that the SEO implications of this are? By the way, proper Meta Titles and Meta Descriptions as well as implementation of href lang tag are in place.

Different language with direct translation: duplicate content, meta?
For a site that does NOT want a separate subdomain, or directory, or TLD for a country/language would the directly translated page (static) content/meta be duplicate? (NOT considering a translation of the term/acronym which could exist in another language) i.e. /SEO-city-state in English vs. /SEO-city-state Spanish -In this example a term/acronym that is the same in any language. Outside of duplicate content, are their other conflict potentials in rankings you can think of?

Can I duplicate my websites content on Ebay Store?
Our company is setting up a store on Ebay. Is it okay to duplicate our content descriptions on our ebay store with a link going back to our website? Or would this potentially hurt us in Search?

Does having a page that ends with ? cause duplicate content?
I am working on a site that has lots of dynamic parameters. So lets say we have www.example.com/page?parameter=1 When the page has no parameters you can still end up at www.example.com/page? Should I redirect this to www.example.com/page/ ? Im not sure if Google ignores this, or if these pages need to be dealt with. Thanks

Duplicate page content query
Hi forum, For some reason I have recently received a large increase in my Duplicate Page Content issues. Currently it says I have over 7,000 duplicate page content errors! For example it says: Sample URLs with this Duplicate Page Content http://dikelli.com.au/accessories/gowns/news.html http://dikelli.com.au/accessories/news.html
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | sterls
http://dikelli.com.au/gallery/dikelli/gowns/gowns/sale_gowns.html However there are no physical links to any of these page on my site and even when I look at my FTP files (I am using Dreamweaver) these directories and files do not exist. Can anyone please tell me why the SEOMOZ crawl is coming up with these errors and how to solve them?0 -
Duplicate content throughout multiple URLs dilemma
We have a website with lots of categories and there are problems that some subcategories have identical content on them. So, is it enough to just add different text on those problematic subcategories or we need to use "canonical" tag to main category. Same dilemma is with our search system and duplicate content. For example, "/category/sports" URL would have similar to identical content with "/search/sports" and "/search/sports-fitness/" URLs. Ranking factors is important for all different categories and subcategories. Ranking factors is also important for search individual keywords. So, the question is, how to make them somehow unique/different to rank on all those pages well? Would love to hear advices how it can be solved using different methods and how it would affect our rankings. When we actually need to use "canonical" tag and when 301 redirect is better. Thanks!

I'm not sure why SEOMoz is reporting duplicate content
I have thousands of duplicate page content errors on my site, but I'm not exactly sure why. For example, the crawl is reporting this page - http://www.fantasytoyland.com/2011-glee-costumes.html is a duplicate of this page - http://www.fantasytoyland.com/2011-jersey-shore-costumes.html . All of these products are unique to the page - what is causing it to flag as duplicate content?
