Ability to Transition Completed Wordpress Website to New Coder/Developer
-
We have worked with the same Wordpress developer since 2012. They recently redesigned our Wordpress site. We purchased a real estate theme and they performed major modifications to it. The project took 8 months. There are many customized widgets and multiple plugins.
We hired a new SEO. The SEO is very comfortable coding. The SEO performed certain modifications and the code broke. The original developer stepped in and and helped restore the code. The SEO stated that the site should not be so delicate; that too many plugins and widgets are used making it inherently unstable. The original developer is claiming that the SEO did not follow best practices (they did not use a dev server to test). For a non technical business owner this is very disturbing. We finally agreed that the new SEO would make changes on a dev server and the original developer will check these changes to ensure they do not break the code.
My question is, shouldn't a Wordpress site be simple enough to hand over to a decent coder with little risk of breaking the code? Are there any standards regarding the hand over of a site? I am comfortable with my developers, but what if they change professions or close their company? How would I transition the site?
There must be standards and protocols that allow a third party, such as an SEO to change code without causing havoc. Any one have some insight?

Hi Alan,
Kinsta is the host and company that offers a container which is more powerful than a VPS in most cases. You get amazing support for things that you are asking questions about here. They will set up to github for you they will do most of the things that I think you want to have a really authoritative opinion on.
Kinsta will make code change for you ServeBolt will tell your developer what to do
ServeBolt offers Bare metal hosting on their custom COLO NVMe drives that are on a VPS are extremely customize and much faster than and your current host is far superior support.
I’m sorry to hear that you have paid in advance you may want to ask if you can get out of that if you cannot You can hire a company like Performance Foundry to do a lot of the work correctly. It sounds like your server is loaded with plug-ins and is not being run correctly by you’re Developer to be honest you may want to contact codeable and have a simple code audit done for $400.
- **https://performancefoundry.com/ is great **
- https://codeable.io/ has hundreds of great
Your question about Plugins After briefly looking at your site I can tell you the code was not done very well but I would like to login before saying that
See below:
https://codeable.io/how-many-wordpress-plugins-too-many/
https://wp-rocket.me/blog/wordpress-plugins-many/
https://torquemag.io/2018/02/wordpress-plugins-many-many/
How Many Plugins is Too Many?
There’s not a number of plugins that’s set in stone for all users.
It depends heavily on the kind of web host you use, though. For shared or budget cloud hosting, stick between 0 and 5 plugins.
If you use cloud hosting, VPS hosting, or a dedicated server, you can run anywhere from 5 and 20 plugins on your site without many issues.
Dan Norris, co-founder of WP Curve, recommends to never exceed 20
From what I understand of your site and I have to be honest I wish I could log into it and give you more insight. It does not look like it was built very well. It definitely is not being maintained very well by your daughter no one should have 50 plug-in is never a need for that even on site that has 4000 jobsite I have never seen anything over 25 ever.
The fact that your developer is not removing the plugins is a really bad sign
Hope this helps,
Tom

Hi Tom:
So are you saying that generally the number of plugins for a Wordpress site should be limited to about 15?
Do you think the Kinsta or Servebolt will be a better platform than a Virtual Private Server on InMotionHosting (what I have now)? I prepaid the annual $1,100 which I will lose if I move, so need to make sure it is better. What can I expect these hosting companies to provide that InMotion does not?
Thanks,
Alan -
If you are running site has 50 plugins & 35 are active.
That is a ton of plugins so I can see the SEO's point you have 3x what I have seen even if a plugin is off it can still hurt your website when your not using a plugin remove it from the site.
GitHub tracks changes in code & problems.
I would move the site to a managed wordpress host like https://kinsta.com/ , https://servebolt.com or https://pagely.com
They will help you with the basics & keep the site running well.
Ask your dev why he needs all the plugins & why he can't do what they are doing with PHP he will have a good reason for some but I really debt for most.

Hi Thomas:
Thanks for your suggestions. I looked at Github but don't quite understand what it is. Would it allow me to trouble shoot code issues? For example, my developers can't get the wt3 total cache plugin to work. They think our InMotion Server does not support it. Very surprising as InMotion is a reputable hosting company. So they have installed multiple plugins to replace WT3.
At the moment the site has 50 plugins of which 35 are active. The domain is www.metro-manhattan.com
I ran a dareboost test and the home page received a test of 68%. The interior pages are will certainly be worse.
I am not technical so these issues are really confusing.
Thanks,
Alan -
Hi
Use GitHub.com for your code. Run dareboost.com
Can you send us your domain or say the number of plug-ins?
_ "SEO stated that the site should not be so delicate; that too many plugins and widgets are used making it inherently unstable."_
They might be right it one bad plugin can kill a WordPress site so yes too many plugins and widgets can make a WP site a nightmare how many plugins?

It's difficult to give you an accurate assessment with limited knowledge, but you're whole situation you are describing there should not happen.
1. SEO shouldn't be making such incredible changes to the site that it breaks code. Your SEO should be focusing on creating content, optimizing this content, and building backlinks to the site. There is a lot of technical SEO that can be done, of course, but not to the extent that you have to play with the code that much. What exactly was he doing when he broke the code?
2. Your developper is right that all changes should be made on a DEV site, but a big part of SEO is implementing changes and then being patient until the results of those changes are visible in search engines. Not sure what the SEO will be able to accomplish on a DEV site in that regard.
3. I replied to you in your other question about plugins. It's very simple when it comes to plugins: use only reputable plugins that have been well reviewed, have a documented history, are updated regularly, are compatible with your theme and never have two plugins do the same thing.
4. I also would advise against relying too much on developers and SEOs. Everything they do (90 % of it at least) can be self-taught on the web. It's a process, but at least you maintain control. Double-check everything your SEO and developer tell you by doing research online. Don't take their word for it. Hiring someone to do the work is great and important so that you can focus on your business, but you have to at least have a general understanding of what they are doing. We have 8 people working our site plus three content writers. Everything they are doing I could do and have taught myself to do it. I just delegate so I can focus on other things.
5. Wordpress is simple. Themes are simple. If you have a quality theme, quality plugins and a quality host, there's no reason it should be unstable.

Migration from HTML to Wordpress - SEO Implications?
I am in the process of having a wordpress site developed to replace my current HTML site. (I currently have my website in html and a blog in wordpress in a sub directory). I am doing this in phases to try and preserve as much of my good rankings as possible. My first phase is to replicate my site with the exact same pages, meta data, and site structure. I'm hoping that google will see this as not much change and not change my rankings for the worse. I also made it a goal that my site speed tests be at least equal to what they are now. We will have to 301 all of the URLs however since it will be going from /example.html to /example. I believe my blog will also need to move into the root directory as well, so I need to 301 all of those pages. I plan to wait a couple months for Phase 2. Phase 2 involves replacing old content (photo galleries), and introducing new content (virtual tours, videos, new pages, etc.) One of my reasons for moving to wordpress is to keep up with current trends a little easier since I have very little time. (I am owner, website maintainer, SEO - all on my own). My question here is three parts. 1. Do you think this strategy will work to preserve my current rankings? 2. Do you have any lessons learned or advice to share with me to make this as smooth as possible? 3. Do I really need to wait to add new content? I might get antsy and want to do it sooner! 🙂 Thank you in advance!

Hidden Text w/ Java Script _ Is it Bad?
Just came across an article that stated that Google is looking negatively at sites that attempt to hide text or use javascripts to expand text on websites. We are about to launch our new website and believe we are using this technique but im not certain if what we are doing will hurt us. Our website tends to be a little heavy on the text so used a "read more" scrpit that will expand when clicked on. Three sections that use this on the new website Take a look and let me know your thoughts http://joomplateshop.com/demos/catdi.com/

New To SEO Management, I just want to double check that my idea will work.
I am new to SEO management. I had a 3 month SEO copy writing internship and a 5 month SEO temp job. In both I mostly wrote copy, but I've been teaching myself SEO on the side, I became Google certified. I ended up getting a telemarketing job and somehow the conversation of SEO came up and I winded up managing their SEO for 12 dollars an hour. They say that every lead generated from the website that turns into a sale will be worth 10 dollars and if and when the sales exceed my paycheck I will starting making commission so long as it stays above my hourly. SEO is very fun and this is like my dream job. They are leaving the planning 100% up to me and I want to make sure that what I am doing will work. My plan is as follows: Part 1: Page Authority via backlinks and social media We are health care brokers and my boss, the owner has a lot of contact. He is talking with large unions like, "The Teamsters," and large company retirment groups like, "Blue flame," which is apparently in some way connected to DTE or GE. Long story short, I am trying to get him to convince them to give us a back link to our main page. He also has a ton of clients that own companies. This is good because they may be persuaded to give us backlinks too. In addition, the tech guy thinks he can implement something where we can get a google +1, facebooks likes/shares, twitter likes and shares and pintrest pin it's that would be a part of an email that we send to people within the list of 12,000 clients. From what I can see, from the client base and the people we are working with we should be able to raise the page authority substantially despite the fact that the site is only a few months old and is not yet out of the sand box. I have been slowly picking off each error with SEO MOZ's website crawling. Part 2: Making a Insurance Jargon Dictionary Guide For The Tri-purpose of gathering traffic, proving our professionalism and helping people understand semi-complex insurance jargon. I could build these 2-3 keywords would be addressed per page and they would be defined in a way to help people looking for terms understand them, while simultaneously netting a strong keyword density and a strong page. I think as far as I can tell there are no issues. Part 3: The dictionary pages will pull in new traffic and the home page will receive links and distribute link juice to the sub-pages. This subpages will guide traffic back to the main page with no-follow links to direct people from the unique termed landing pages to the home page for insurance processing. As far as I can tell my logic is solid and on paper this should work. Am I missing anything (like key details, flaws in my plan)?

A/B Testing.. Are you doing? how is it been? What do you think would be the best path for who is starting now?
Hey Mozers, One of my 2014 resolutions is to start doing A/B Testing, so far I have been following "best practices" and "common sense" when comes to website design, but I would like to go above and beyond. I was hoping a could get a few tips some of you that are already doing A/B testing. How is it been? Do you see a great ROI? What do you think would be best path for who is starting now? Any book or links you would recommend? Thanks

Creating Multiple Sub-Directories in Wordpress
Hi fellow Mozzers, I'm currently in the process of planning/building a website for e-commerce and have stumbled on a bit of a hurdle with sub-directories. I want to use a piece of software called SellerDeck to generate my e-commerce store and also my homepage (index.html). This element of the build is fine as the e-commerce store will sit in a sub-directory of .co.uk/store/. What I'm struggling with is the rest of the site architecture. I want to use Wordpress to manage content for the rest of the site. I want to have sub-directories .co.uk/help/ and .co.uk/blog/, all managed from one Wordpress installation. Is this possible? If not, does having two separate installations of Wordpress create any speed issues? Additional question for bonus points from me; lets say I wanted to do away with sub-directories for the /help/ and /blog/ elements (but keep the /store/), could I have a Wordpress installation that doesn't generate a homepage (index.php) so I can utilise the e-commerce software version instead. Essentially I'd be installing Wordpress at the root folder, but wouldn't have an index.php made by Wordpress. Many thanks in advance

Word Press Seo Errors/ Questions
Hi my name is Tina I am new here I hope you guys can help me out. I thought building my new site with Word Press was going to simplify things, however I have a ton of errors, and I am not sure what they are, or how to fix them. I am hoping someone could share with me a solution for these errors. I have 28 rel=canonical errors, I am not sure what this means, I understand it to mean my pages are similar, and this is to set a heirarchy between my pages. Please correct me if I am wrong. If I am correct would this be necessary to add if my main keyword was "widgets" and my home page was optimized for "widgets" and my next page was "blue widgets" and so on. While my pages are similar they are all optimized for different versions of my main keyword some using long tail keywords. Do you know of a plugin that can help solve this problem? Also does anyone have a plugin they recommend for G+ my G+ authorship verification is causing an error as well? I am using Head Space 2 I have used this seo plugin numerous times with great success it has been my favorite seo plugin. However, we have a portfolio that shows our clients websites, and on those pages Head Space will not let me enter a description tag. What plug in do you guys recommend with more control over each page? Another interesting issue is on one of our pages I optimized it for our Canadian clients, and now every page has been listed in Google.ca for the keywords it should have on Google.com. We are listed on Google maps, verified in Google places, and our address is on the site so they know we're from the USA however, the majority of our keywords are only listed in Google.ca. We're on page one for all of them, we are in the top three on most of them so that's not bad, but we want to be listed in Google.com as well. Any suggestions on this?

Duplicate content and blog/twitter feeds
Hi Mozzers, I have a question... I'm planning to add a blog summary/twitter feed throughout my website (onto every main content page) and then started worrying about duplicate content. What is best practice here? Let me know - thanks, Luke PS. I sat down and re: blog feed... thought that perhaps it would help if I fed different blog posts through to different pages (which I could then edit so I could add<a></a> text different from that in blog). Not sure about twitter.
