Micro-sites for Landing Pages?
-
We are working with a site that is difficult at best to update. The client intends to re-do the site in 18 months or so but needs to start generating more traffic (and sales) now. What are thoughts on creating landing pages as micro-sites that point to the current site conversion page as a stop gap? Beyond not sharing authority is there any known penalty? By the way they don't have tremendous ranking right now - often bottom of page two - and the micro-site won't duplicate any content.

Federico--sounds good. Maybe I was focus more on the issue of the websites were difficult to update--and this would provide an avenue to update. My recommendation was to create informational pages that would link into the parent site does add value--and would not be perceived as a doorway page.
If the page is low-quality and does not provide user value it could be classified as a doorway page.
Have a good one

Kevin, I think the question is what is the intent on those subdomains. As he points, he wants to generate more traffic, I inferred Google traffic by creating those subdomains, as such, those won't add anything to the main site besides the link to the main domain, which actually is a doorway page (correct me if I'm wrong).
-
So a site that has an informational blog with information/reviews and links to the parent site is worse than one hosted on another domain? Don't wholly agree (and I mention not advisable)...
According to Matt Cutts, a subdomain is roughly an equivalent to a directory. So I believe it is more of an issue of information architecture and gives an opportunity for informatics to create a workaround on the site that is difficult to update.
Subdomains are also viewed as internal links/not external links.
-
Actually it would be worse. As Doorway pages are pages that link to your domain from other domains. And subdomains are considered separate domains, therefore a page that its only purpose is to drive traffic to the main page is a doorway page, which is against google TOS.
-
Sorry, I wasn't clear. These pages would be on a sub-domain of their main site: landingpages.theirsite.com
But from Federico's answer that looks to make little difference.
-
I would advise against it. The potential downside would be great whereas the upside is neutral at best. Just create some informational content hooks on the current site and lead to the conversion pages (a subdomain would be better than the doorway page--but still not advisable).
-
Couldn't that be considered as doorway pages? There's a penalty on doorway pages.

Bigcommerce only allows us to have https for our store only, not the other pages on our site, so we have a mix of https and http, how is this hurting us and what's the best way to fix?
So we aren't interested in paying a thousand dollars a month just to have https when we feel it's the only selling point of that package, so we have https for our store and the rest of the site blogs and all are http. I'm wondering if this would count as duplicate content or give us some other unforeseen penalty due to the half way approach of https being implemented. If this is hurting us, what would you recommend as a solution?

Is there a way to index important pages manually or to make sure a certain page will get indexed in a short period of time??
Hi There! The problem I'm having is that certain pages are waiting already three months to be indexed. They even have several backlinks. Is it normal to have to wait more than three months before these pages get an indexation? Is there anything i can do to make sure these page will get an indexation soon? Greetings Bob

Google showing https:// page in search results but directing to http:// page
We're a bit confused as to why Google shows a secure page https:// URL in the results for some of our pages. This includes our homepage. But when you click through it isn't taking you to the https:// page, just the normal unsecured page. This isn't happening for all of our results, most of our deeper content results are not showing as https://. I thought this might have something to do with Google conducting searches behind secure pages now, but this problem doesn't seem to affect other sites and our competitors. Any ideas as to why this is happening and how we get around it?

Will sitemap generated in Yoast for a combined wordpress/magento site map entire site ?
Hi For an ecommerce site thats been developed via a combination of wordpress and magento and has yoast installed, will the sitemap (& other yoast features) map (& apply to) the entire site or just wordpress aspects ? In other words does one need to do anything else to have a full sitemap for a combined magento/wordpress site or will Yoast cover it all ? This link seems to suggest should be fine but seeing if anyone else encountered this and had problems or if straightforward ? http://fishpig.co.uk/wordpress-integration/docs/plugins.html cheers dan

SEOMoz is indicating I have 40 pages with duplicate content, yet it doesn't list the URL's of the pages???
When I look at the Errors and Warnings on my Campaign Overview, I have a lot of "duplicate content" errors. When I view the errors/warnings SEOMoz indicates the number of pages with duplicate content, yet when I go to view them the subsequent page says no pages were found... Any ideas are greatly welcomed! Thanks Marty K.

Micro formats to block HTML text portions of pages
I have a client that wants to use micro formatting to keep a portion of their page (the disclaimer) from being read by the search engines. They want to do this because it will help with their keyword density on the rest of the page and block the “bad keywords” that come from their legally required disclaimer. We have suggested alternate methods to resolve this problem, but they do not want to implement those, they just want a POV from us explaining how this micro formatting process will work. And that’s where the problem is. I’ve never heard of this use case and can’t seem to find anyone who has. I'm posting the question to the Moz Community to see if anyone knows how microformats can keep copy from being crawled by the bots. Please include any links to sites that you know that are using micro formatting in this way. Have you implemented it and seen results? Do you know of a website that is using it now? We're looking for use cases please!
