    Hi Everyone,

I am looking for some help, I have just taken over a campaign for a client and we are seeing huge changes in conversion rates overnight.

The client is selling a health product and is consistently getting around 1-2k visitors per day. We are getting about 6% of the traffic to the buy page consistently.

However, we have found that one day the order process may convert 1/20 of these visitors and another day it could be 1/80.

We are only talking about 5-20 sales per day, but I am really confused why one day it can convert so well and another so poorly. The traffic being sent is the same and all other factors are the same (no split testing).

There seems to be no logic, the day of the week does not seem to impact, it almost seems random.

If anybody has any recommended places to look that would be very helpful as at the moment I am at a loss.

    Example:

    Sunday 15th Visitors: 1,279
    Order Page: 240
    Sales: 3
    Declines: 3

    Monday 16th Visitors: 1,407
    Order Page: 323
    Sales: 17
    Declines: 5

      Hi Andy,

It looks like you need to do some Web Analytics due diligence to identify what caused that spike in conversions. Here is a list of things you can do to help identify the root cause:

      - Setup Google Analytics Custom Alerts

GA's custom alerts do a great job of alerting us of unusual spikes / valleys from our traffic. I would suggest setting up custom alerts around your KPIs and business objectives. If you Google about GAs custom alerts, many of the recommended initial alerts are a great place to begin finding some to setup for your website.

      - Use GA to find the differences in traffic and conversions

Although your conversions and traffic are relatively low (we may want to gather more data before concluding that there was a statistical difference in the conversion data), we could begin to analyze the traffic through understanding the sources it came from, specific campaigns that converted (make sure to be tagging your links accordingly!), qty of products ordered, maybe a new referral source contributed to the new conversions, ect.

      - Do some keyword analysis

Did your new customers come from a specific source on a related topic? Did specific terms send new traffic to your sales page that converted well that day?

In order to find insights into changes, we need to make sure that we're properly tracking and measuring our traffic and acquisition strategies. Many times when there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer, it's because we haven't set ourselves up for success when measuring our campaigns and goals.

If anybody has any recommended places to look that would be very helpful as at the moment I am at a loss.

Go look at the SERPs.  Did rankings change?   Did adwords change?  Did google products change?  These are just examples.  You can probably think of more.

Go look at competitors.   Did they change prices?   Did they change shipping?   Are they sold out?  These are just examples.   You can probably think of more.

Go ask the client.   Is manufacturer running ads?   Did manufacturer change MSRP and client didn't?   Was celebrity seen on TV using product?   Did client change HIS price?   Did client change HIS shipping?

There are dozens of other reasons.  And then this could just be one of those "mysteries of life".

Most likely, I think that the answer to this question is going to be found by knowing the business rather than lookin' at tools.

Will Landing Page Design with Large Areas of White Background Enjoy a Higher Conversion Rate?

My designer has created a landing page with a dark background. Text is white and other colors. Does a dark background impact the conversion rate? Is it better to have a white background? I am concerned that a dark background may distract visitors. The landing page is: http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com/MidtownLawOfficeSublet3300SFBelowMarket We plan on using this landing page for LinkedIn advertising. Thanks!!

Attribution model - the weighted number of conversions - GA

Hi, 1.Can someone explain me with an example what is "The weighted number of conversions under the custom selected attribution model"? How Analytics calculate it? 2. If I increase e.g social source for 1.4 in my attribution model, my organic or direct source are loosing that weighted number of conversions. Could it be because of organic or direct getting lower credit, or for some other reason? Ty. Br.

How ppc affects organic and direct convesions and traffic.

Hi, I was wondering what percentage of organic conversions is related to ppc previous traffic. I mean, when we evaluate the results of a campaign, we take a look at the cost per conversion in analytics for one specific word. Lets say that we know that for PPC campaigns we have the following data Adwords / PPC Visits: 4500 %conversions rate = 1,15% Cost per conversion = $10 ORGANIC Visits: 1300 % conversions rate = 2,10% DIRECT Visitis: 1000 %conversions rate= 2,54% It is obvious that if I cancel the adwords campaign part of the organic and direct traffic will drop too. So, I was wondering if have you ever done this calculation and if you know what percentage of the organic a direct traffic is related with de ppc campaigns. I mean... Let's say... "20% of the ppc traffic will come back to the website as organic traffic or direct traffic", or something like that... Anyone??? Thanks 😄

How can I track the traffic source/keyword of form submissions?

I'm using Google Analytics on www.nhfinehomes.com and would like to track the source of leads submitted via form submissions. Ideally, I could track if the lead originated from organic search (and what keyword phrase), PPC, referral links, etc. Is this possible with Google Analytics and if so, can anyone point to some documentation on how to do this or better yet someone who can help me set this up? This site is running ASP.NET and uses JQuery so there is not a 'traditional' thank you page that I can reference. I'm not a programmer and do not pretend to be one! Thanks in advance. Link

Conversion optimization with Optimizely, impact on SEO

I am looking into signing up with www.optimizely.com for conversion testing.  They put scripting on my site which will then redirect half of my site visitors to an alternate home page.  The site I want to test on is ranking quite well with Google and I do not want to hurt my rankings. And with this set up,what Google will think is my home page is not and so I am essentially sending visitors to a different page than Google reads as my home page in source code. So, my concern is whether this will have a negative impact on my SEO rankings to redirect 50% of site visitors to a different page using this testing tool? I would use Google Web Site Optimizer, but many of my sites are in Wordpress and it seems that Wordpress and web site optimizer are not so compatible. Advice would be appreciated. Thank you, Robert

Low conversion rate, high ticket item... but not THAT high

Oh great mozzers, I fall at your feet... I feel like I'm going insane... My client, 35 Degrees (http://35DegreesSteaks.com) is quite the mystery.  I handle SEO and paid search for them, and we're doing great in those areas... however, we're just not seeing the conversions once I deliver these folks to the site. The people are targeted, the keywords are sound, and from what I can see, the checkout process isn't a mess... but they are just not getting the sales. We're currently starting to test some price points with some newer, lower cost "intro packages", so we'll see if that's one of the pain points.  I'm also in the process of convincing them to include a Verisign or some other logo in the checkout process. However, I was hoping the great minds here could take a quick look and see if I'm missing anything else. Thanks in advance! Jeff

Can Changing Meta Descriptions Negatively Impact SERP's?

I have just had a page start ranking well in key SERP's and I would like to change the meta description and add a price as we are extremely competative in that line. Could changing the meta description now a page is ranking negatively impact the SERP placing? Does anyone have any experience with this?
