Ranking Drops
-
Hi
I'm seeing a few category pages drop out of Google for certain keywords but not others, I'm trying to work out why & see if this correlates to a drop in conversion
Organic Traffic isnt down, but conversion is so I'm trying to identify where its coming from - a lot has come from the homepage, but we have also lost a lot of positions across the site.
has anyone noticed any google updates in Jan?
Example of the page https://www.key.co.uk/en/key/shelving-racking
Keywords lost in top 10 UK Google:
<colgroup><col width="199"></colgroup>
racking shelving
shelving racking
racking shelves
industrial shelving unit
racking storage
shelf racking
shelving units industrial
industrial pallet racking
| shelf racking system | -
Hi Becky,
Without really investigating this it's hard to find an exact reason as to why you're experiencing ranking drops. You're right to check for any recent algo updates, but if there was something large - the entire SEO and digital marketing community would be losing their minds now.
If I were you, I'd take some time to analyse the pages that have experienced the ranking drops, looking into the following areas:
- Check for algorithm updates (which you've done)
- Run your site and URLs through Page Speed Insights and make sure that there are no serious errors highlighted. If there are, make sure you get them fixed ASAP.
- Check that Google can actually see those pages, making sure that there aren't any nofollow, noindex tags in place
- Log into your Google Search Console account and check for any crawl errors, indexing errors & sitemap faults etc
- Run a crawl of your site in a tool such as Screaming Frog and check for any 404's, 302's and any redirect loops that may need to be addressed
- Do a full backlink analysis to make sure that any links pointing to your site are relevant and not spammy. Any low quality links pointing to your site, whether you built them recently or years ago will be having a negative effect
- I noticed that the URLs on your site don't use a trailing slash at the end. However, when I manually add a trailing slash, both URLs are showing as '200 OK' meaning that these can be considered as two different pages, which can cause confusion to Googlebot. I'd recommended making sure that any URLs that include a trailing slash are automatically redirected to the version without one - implement that site wide.
- Also, should a user search a URL on your site with a capital letter in the URL - they are being directed to a '404 Error' page. Implement a site wide redirection to make sure that any URLs that include a capital letter are then redirected to the correct lowercase version. For example: http://www.yoursite.com/proDuct > http://www.yoursite.com/product
I'm sure there are a few other areas that you can look into but hopefully that provides you with a good basis.
Best of luck

Can Very High Impressions and 0% Organic CTR Impact our SEO Rankings?
I have a very strange feeling that someone bad is trying to hurt our company, but maybe I am wrong. Let me explain. In the last two month, we have seen a very significant drop in sales on our website, but we couldn't figure out why. We have looked at different metrics (Google Search Console, Moz, Google Analytics), but everything looked alright. We had 10% loss in traffic, but we didnt believe at the time that it could be the main issue. Just yesterday we've discovered the following (please see attached screenshot😞 On August 18, 2018 Google launched Search Update On the same date, we had a jump in Organic Search Impressions for one particular keyword, which we never tracked before: "free facebook login". Majority of all impressions (233,000 out of 258,000) were from Philippines. Very low total number of clicks (50 clicks) led to 0% Average CTR for this keyword. Which in return, also lowered our global CTR by 1%. One month later we had 1000's of spam emails sent to our Helpdesk from two IP addresses, also from Philippines. We blocked them of course. It could be all coincidence. I dont know. But do you think that someone can use this fraudulent tactic to lower our CTR and drop our ranking and traffic? Can this influence our SEO in any way? It's also possible that someone is attacking Facebook and we just happen to be there, on the first page, for the same keyword. Should we try to eliminate our page for this keyword and see what happens? I've checked this article from Rand Fishkin - https://moz.com/blog/impact-of-queries-and-clicks-on-googles-rankings-whiteboard-friday and it seems that CTR is an important factor. However the article is from 2015 and maybe it's no longer relevant. What should we do? Thanks! G86Nge4

Site Redesign Leads Dropped
One of my clients recently had his site redesigned. He wanted to change the design completely, I did offer advice on aspects relating to the redesign, I think its fair to say that he didn't follow all of my advice. PPC still running as usual and rankings still OK but the leads have gone down. Most of the leads come via the phone. I have suggested a number of ways to establish what has gone wrong including surveying his existing customers, comparing old and new designs etc...The client isn't keen on these methods. I'm hoping someone has some direct experience and can offer some direction as to how best to proceed? Justin

Figuring out why sales drop significantly from one day to another
Hi all, We're running an eCommerce site and are using Moz to track our organic results i primarily we are using the Rank tracker and On page analysis tools. One strange issue that we experience on our website is sales dropping from one day to the next unexplainably (to us anyway). For example, one day (could be any day of the week or weekend) we'll make £1,000 of sales, the next £200 - the following might be back up to £1,000. I've tried looking for patterns in traffic, but oddly even on the days when we have poor sales we still tend to have almost as much traffic. We also use adwords, which account for about 50% of sales - on some of the poor days our spend on adwords is down, on others it's not. If the spend is down I could make a fair assumption that our competitors are playing around with their bids. I'm interesting in trying to determine why we have such irregular sales patterns. If they dropped 10/20% I could quite easily put it down to any number of factors - even the weather for example, however drops of 80/90% seem strange. I don't really know where to look for the answers - my first thought was that on the poor days I should check whether our organic rankings had dropped significantly overnight - but the Moz Rank Tracker only updates once per week, so perhaps there is an alternative way someone could suggest? I'd be really interested to hear from any of you that might have been through similar struggles, or, have some ideas that might help us get to the bottom of the fluctuation in sales. Thanks in advance for your time. Kind regards,

Is it Easier to rank High Authority Websites?
I have been doing SEO for several years and I know LOTS of things play into factor when it comes to rankings, but what's your thoughts on ranking pages on a high authority websites vs a fairly new website? I'm thinking about buying an old domain and building links to it, rather than continuing with my fairly new domain. Do you think I have a better chance taking this route??

How To Rank Landing Pages In The SERPs
Hi, am hoping someone can give me a little advice.. We have created an Ebook for a client, which we will ‘hide’ behind a landing page for the purpose of collecting email addresses in return for a link to the Ebook. We are thinking of using Unbounce landing pages, integrated with Mailchimp. The problem however is that I’m assuming it will not be possible for Unbounce landing pages to rank well in the SERPs.. which is essential. The obvious solution would be to write a blog post detailing the contents of the Ebook, and then to ‘SEO’ this post.. this however will not provide a positive user experience as below; Visitor lands on blog post Visitor then has to click through to Ubounce landing page (very similar content) Visitor completes form to download Ebook My question is; What’s the best way to rank a direct landing page in the SERP’s, whilst providing the best possible user experience (less steps)? Many thanks in advance, your time is appreciated 🙂 Lee.

Sudden drop in conversions!
Over the past week, I have noticed a drop in conversions. By drop, I mean NONE at all. The traffic to the site seems steady from different sources, so I don't think we've been hit with a penalty. I have looked through the site, and there are no problems with the functionality. Is it possible that you lose conversions because of the type of keywords that are driving traffic? In other words, the impressions and queries remain steady, but you are not getting traffic that converts (if that makes any sense). Thanks in advance for thoughts and advice.

Huge Increase in Search Traffic - Expected Drop in Conversions?
We've recently implemented a successful strategy whereby we've increased non-branded organic search traffic by over 50%. We started with our niche products and secured those rankings and then expanded the program to include local results. Rev is up, trans# is up, but conversion rate dropped. Here is the question...is there an acceptable ratio between the percentage growth in visits and the percentage decrease in conversions?
