What To Do For A Website That is Mainly Images
-
I have a website that is a desktop wallpaper script.
People can come and upload 100's of wallpapers to share with the community.
This is were the problems comes in.
Files are normally called 27636dark.jpg or whatever and come with no description.
This leads to 2 things.
-
no text content that google can use to know what the page/image is about.
-
Meta descriptions, URL's just look like spam.
Example: /car-wallpapers/7636dark.jpg
If a text description was added, it would still only be like "Green Trees in the distance". Which as you may guess, with 1,000's of wallpapers... would end up having a lot of descriptions the same.
Is there any advice for sites that focus on image driven content?

Go to the http://www.gumtree.com/ and create an ad for a house (or whatever), the in field help they give to get users to give indepth information is great without seeming forced.
If you incentivise your community via "likes" or rankings, then they will want to provide this information i.e. make it in their interest to provide you with information
-
image sitemaps is the way to go, Google is loving that lately
-
1st of all, make an image sitemap and submit to Google. Here are the guidelines to do so.

Then, do some default tag and category definition. As Barry pointed out, it makes a lot of sense to categorize. That would add relevance to your website in searches.
Then, at the backend, assign default tags for the categories. Like for cars, the default tag could be automobiles, for scenery it could be nature so on and so forth. That would help in your optimization.
-
Yeah, I'm not a fan of tag pages in general, but I often see these image sites and especially site themes (for WP, Joomla, etc) using them to very good effect. Certainly if there's 100 new wallpapers a day being added I think they can be beneficial.
However, please do look very carefully at how you make them and link to them. Consider no following links to those pages and even perhaps no indexing the pages themselves.
I don't have enough experience with using tag pages to give you any definitive advice, maybe someone else can jump in
-
Barry is right, I would suggest to wait before puttin tag pages online (or making them indexable), this can lead to huge amount of very similar pages.
Apart from asking user to put a description (or any other UGC like comments, tags, etc.), you compute some data from the images if you have the technical capacity : compute the colors of the wallpapers to have 2 or 3 main colors, size of the wallpaper, file format, etc. This will allow you to display "raw" data or even generate text patterns to fill the blanks.
-
Well, it depends how much forcing users to add a description would negatively effect you I suppose. Hard to get something out when there's no data being put in
They must already choose a category (car), can you get them to name the image (ask them to be descriptive 'Red Ferrari on an Italian mountainside') and tag it with items in the wallpaper (red, Ferrarri)?
If so then you can improve your URLs a title tags
URL: site.com/car-wallpapers/red-ferarri-italian-mountainside-3/
Title: Red Ferarri on an Italian Mountainside Car Wallpaper | Computer Desktop WallpapersAdd the tags on the page with links to tag pages (which I don't always like but would be useful for your users and internal linking).
URL: site.com/car-wallpapers/tag/red
Title: Red Car Wallpapers | Computer Desktop Wallpapersor
URL: site.com/tag/ferarri
Title: Ferrari Car Wallpapers | Ferarri Computer Desktop WallpapersUnfortunately unless you want to do all this yourself you will have to get users to give you more info at time of upload. As I say, no real way to get something out without putting something in

Redirect old image that has backlinks
Hi Moz Community! I'm doing an audit of a website and did a backlink analysis. In the backlink analysis, there is an image that has 66 backlinks but the image doesn't exist on the website anymore (it was on a website that was created in 2011 - 2 web launches ago). I don't believe a 301 redirect will work for an image that doesn't exist anymore. How would I redirect the image URL (it's WordPress so we have a specific URL that other websites are linking to but get 404 errors) without going to each individual website and requesting they change the URL link? Any advice or recommendations would be great. Thanks!

Website Indexing Issues - Search Bots will only crawl Homepage of Website, Help!
Hello Moz World, I am stuck on a problem, and wanted to get some insight. When I attempt to use Screaming Spider or SEO Powersuite, the software is only crawling the homepage of my website. I have 17 pages associated with the main domain i.e. example.com/home, example.com/sevices, etc. I've done a bit of investigating, and I have found that my client's website does not have Robot.txt file or a site map. However, under Google Search Console, all of my client's website pages have been indexed. My questions, Why is my software not crawling all of the pages associated with the website? If I integrate a Robot.txt file & sitemap will that resolve the issue? Thanks ahead of time for all of the great responses. B/R Will H.

I want my website to show up properly through Google Structured Data Testing Tool however, I don't want the text to show up on my website not stylized. It sticks out like a soar thumb no matter where I incorporate it. My questions are; Should I even bother with Schema.org? And, is there a way to incorporate it into my website so it does not show up and Google can still pull it up? Thanks ahead of time for all of the awesome responses! B/R Will H.0 -
Best strategy for images filenames?
Hi community! For this case, which would be the best strategy for image filenames? This is a funiture company, with its own brand. What they sell is what they have created and designed Let's think on a kitchen. And we have a page we want to rank for the primary Kw "modern kitchen", and secondaries "white modern kitchen", "modern minimalist kitchen", "modern kitchen designs". Would you use the brand name in the filenames? I mean:

---------- modern-minimalist-kitchen-brandname.jpg
---------- modern-kitchen-brandname.jpg Would you use just the kws in the filename and the brand in the alt text?
---------- filename: white-modern-kitchen.jpg Alt: "White Modern Kitchen, Brand" or should we use the brand in both items: filename and Alt? ¿Which would be the best way to do it in this case? Any suggestions? Thank you!0 -
Website Redirection Issue
Hi All, Like to know is there any better way to do 301 redirection. My Client whose website name is Online Plants created with OpenCart. Over the period of time he added nearly 10,000's of products and now he is cleaning them ( by grouping similar attribute under one products) which is right way to do. For example , Product A with different size ( X,XL,XXL ) previously had 3 product entry ( A - X, A - XL, A - XXL ) , now he is moving all of them under one. So while moving he is deleting the other two entry. Now whats the best way to inform google . Putting a manual 301 redirection for each and every product is impossible as there are more products. Whats the best way to go ahead on this.

Weird meta description for website launch
Hi all, We just launched a new website: http://www.allwatchapps.com/ There is no link yet, but everything seems allright in google webmaster tools: everypage seems to be indexed, and content keywords are good. However, when I search for "allwatchapps" in google, I got a meta description for the homepage: 26 mai 2014 - Contact. : + 33 (0)6.33.27.78.63 : info@allwatchapps.com : Grenoble - Lyon - Chambéry - Annecy - Paca - Paris ... It is the date of the page, which I want to disable (where does it com from?! I use Yoast SEO plugin and didn't find the option), and the footer contact info, why is that?... Thanks, best, Benoit.

Domains for regional websites
Please take a look at 7city.com This landing page contains links to: www.7city.co.uk www.7city.ae www.7city.com.sg and our US website which is also www.7city.com It is programmed so: If you are a first time user and type www.7city.com you go to the landing page above. If you then click on AMERICAS, it sets a cookie and directs you to http://www.7city.com/home . When you revisit www.7city.com in the future as the cookie is set you will be automatically sent to the AMERICAS website i.e http://www.7city.com/home. Our US websites is nor performing well on organic ranking compared to other regional website. Is the above technique hindering our organic ranking in the US. Also, I have been led to believe that you get a higher ranking if the domain is specific to a country. Is this true? Does 7city.com receive higher ranking than if I created it as 7city.us for example? Many Thanks Mark
