Newish site dropped out of rankings - is this normal?
-
I've got a small, 3 month old site that was ranking for a few low-competition keywords. Then, yesterday, it dropped out of the rankings almost completely. The only way to find it is to google the URL/site name, and then it does come up. There are pages in the index, they're just not ranking like they did two days ago. I'm not doing anything black hat or even slightly shady - just writing articles and clean link building.
Is this a normal part of the Google process? I've never seen it happen on any other sites I've been involved with.
-
Anything change in the past week?
-
Thanks - sounds like you found it. Since the last OSE update, I've been getting quite a few more links, all from relevant sites, but they're from small, low authority sites and a handful of big on-topic message boards (none are astroturfed- they're legit links).
That's what's so frustrating - as the content and backlinks were increasing, google traffic was as well - quite predictably, in fact. And it seemed like good legit traffic. Then bam - nothing.
Hopefully it will clean up soon.

Check in Open Site Explorer. If I guess your site correctly, it looks like you have only five linking root domains, and one of those is a site-wide footer link from an unrelated site. More links from on-topic sites would certainly help. With OSE, you can add in a competitor's URL and look at their backlinks and find good places to start your link building campaign.
Again, if I guess your site correctly, it does look like a nice site, good content that hasn't been scraped elsewhere, etc. I don't see anything headsmackingly obvious there.
And as a side note, I sympathize with you on the gun laws. Our business involves RC warships that shoot BBs and ball bearings at each other, and there are many countries that just can't be involved in our sport.
-
It's an online magazine/blog sort of site (not on a blog platform, but same sort of content). All original content (articles of about 700 words, plus some downloadable pdfs) related to the shooting sports industry. Vistors would be predominantly from the US, plus a smattering from New Zealand, Austrailia, and western Europe. Most any traffic form a part of the world without liberal gun laws would be suspect. Going on two days now with no ranking. No messages on Webmaster tools.
The only other thing I can think of is that there are a handful of Amazon affiliate links on the site, but nothing major. Literally about 3 links on the entire site.
I am hosting DNS on Cloudflare, but other sites I have hosted there have not been hit like this.
I'm hoping this is just a blip that will be corrected soon, but I want to make sure I'm not missing something obvious.

On Monday Google announced they're taking the Panda update to English-language Google searchers worldwide, not just in the US, and that they've also made other updates that affect about 2% of US queries. http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2011/04/high-quality-sites-algorithm-goes.html
New sites can fluctuate, usually getting an initial boost then settling out a bit. In your case, launching right before a couple of major algorithm changes may have made for even more fun.
Can you give us any details about your site? If not the URL, can you give us location of the site and type of site? Is it a forum? A blog? A small business? Original content? User reviews? etc.
Have you looked in Google Webmaster Tools to see if there are any messages or information for you there?
-
This is just Google likely testing the site, you may have heard of the term "Google Dance" this is likely what it is, but also, Google tests their SERPs immensely, so you may just be wrapped up in the test. Hopefully you don't get the shaft. I'd say, just wait a few days and see what happens.

My client redesigned their site. Once it went live, ALL of their rankings disappeared. Even branding. Help?
Does anybody know why this might happen? When we made the new site, we just changed the skins. The source code was the same, the content was the same. Even when I search their brand name and their city, their URL won't show up. When I search their URL into Google, it won't even pull up their homepage: it only pulls up /contact-us and some other subpages. Any tips on what I should be looking out for?

How can a site rank high without any visible SEO tactics?
Hi SEO specialists, I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but there is something bugging me for awhile now, so I thought let's give it a try. I work for several clients and one of them works in the Psychic business. Since a few months we see that site from Psychicvop.com is taking over all kinds of top rankings in Google. The strange thing is that I can't detect anything that I always learned which is basic material for SEO. There isn't much content and there link profile isn't really spectacular either. Does any of you have an idea what it is about this sites that makes them outrank every other site in the business?

Top-10 ranked site dropping in/out of Google index?
I work for a company that makes an important product in a category. The company has a website (www.company.org); the product is at www.company.org/product. We recently (early May) redesigned and rearchitected the product site for SEO purposes. The company site talks about the category a bit (imagine the Colgate site; it talks about "toothpaste" a bit). The blog (blog.company.org/product) also talks about the category quite a bit (and links to the company site of course). The product is a major product in the category, among the top 3. The site and blog have been around for 15+ years. The site has appx. a billion backlinks, most branded links to the product. It's in the top 50 highest ranked sites among all sites on the internet in the ahrefs rank index. Imagine you are searching for our product category, "category". If you search for "category" in Bing today, my company's site is the 3rd result, and it's the 1st result from a company that makes a product in this category. If you search for "category" in Google today, our site is not in the top 150 results. In fact, the site keeps dropping out of Google's index. (See attached for what that looks like in the search console.) What might cause a site to jump from "ranked in top 10" to "not ranked" in Google -- back and forth every couple of days? Penalties? Our recent (early May) site rearchitecture? We're not making giant, index-shifting changes every day. wE0Bn

How are these sites ranking!?!
One of our clients is in the insurance industry and over the last 12 months we have seen an increasing number of low quality, newly registered, spammy sites achieving top 5 rankings for major keywords, which in turn is having an adverse effect on the rankings for our client. Does anyone have any idea how the following sites have managed to do this: http://www.multiquotetaxi.co.uk/ - 2nd for taxi insurance http://www.motortradefast.co.uk/ - 1st for motor trade insurance http://www.traders-insurance.com/ - 3rd for motor trade insurance http://www.multiquotefleet.co.uk/ - 1st for fleet insurance We have tried reporting the above sites, tried holding out to see if they get penalised and tried figuring out what they have done ourselves but cannot see how they have managed it. Any ideas at all?

3 Pages Ranking Beside Each Other | How do I consolidate so one ranks better?
An ecommerce website I own called backyardGamez.com sells outdoor games, for example cornhole boards, bags, etc. One such product is a cornhole board carrying case. If you search the above phrase, my site has three pages that rank on the first page. The term isn't high volume, so I'm assuming that is part of the reason. Is this a good, normal thing or does this mean I have inadvertently broken up my ranking power from one powerful page to 3 OK pages? Does anyone know how I can take two of these pages and use them to make the 3rd page more powerful? For example, I would prefer 1 page ranks higher on page 1 in the serps and the other two fall a bit from supporting the other. Thanks, Adam

Rankings dropped - lost 3,000 backlinks (but from same domain)
lost a lot of rankings. 2 things have happened to my site over the past 2 weeks and I am trying to establish which may be the case: My site has 30.000 links from a top news site (on main bar across all pages - not for SEO, it just happened). My site lost 3,000 links from this site last week, when they were doing some cleaning up, which means I still have 25,000+ links from them. My site - job site - has published another job board's jobs so I get paid per click. This means ratio of my job vs external jobs is 1 to 5. So basically, I added last week 5 times more jobs that is already live on external site to get paid per click. In other words, my own site's unique content went down big time. Which of the 2 is more likely to cause the massive drop in rankings since last night?

Sudden rankings drop for our most profitable keyword?
Hi, I was hoping you could help me with a troubling issue that has come up this week. We have consistently ranked in the top 3 for the keyword "grey goose glasses" for the last 12 months. We received 74 visits from this keyword from Dec 3 to Jan 3. For some reason on Jan 4th we dropped from the top 3 to somewhere around 40-70 and receive almost no traffic from this keyword an longer. The page that was ranking was http://thebottlemill.com/tbm/grey-goose-drinking-glass.html I have since changes a the Page title and URL with a 301 redirect and the H1 tag to be a better match but this was just done yesterday. We havent seemed to be effected like this on other keywords. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Rankings Dropped
Hello, I wonder if anyone can point us in the right direction. Our main domain name has got a good SEO profile the domain is 12 years old and we have some good reputable links. On the 7th of Jan our website dropped in the rankings from 3rd to 10th for one of our main keywords and from then onwards some of our other keywords have dropped. We have a lot of landing pages that target specific keywords which look like a template page but just with the content changed. Can anyone pin point what could of caused this problem or has anyone experienced this before and knows how to fix it. I personally think we have been hit by the panda. Thanks, Scott
