Sudden drop in ranks and traffic after migrating community website into main domain
-
Hi,
We recently moved our community website (around 50K web pages) to our main domain.
It now resides as a sub-domain on our main website.
e.g. Before -
we had www.mainwebsite.com and www.communitywebsite.com
After -
we have www.communitywebsite.mainwebsite.com
This change took place on July 19th.
After a week, we saw 16% drop in organic traffic to mainwebsite.com.
Our ranks on most of the head keywords including brand keywords have dropped.
We had created 301 redirects from pages on www.communitywebsite.com before this change was made.
Has anybody seen this kind of impact when domains are merged?
Should we expect that within 3-4 weeks Google will be able to re-index and re-rank all the pages?
Is there anything else we could do to rectify the situation?
Any feedback/suggestions are welcome!

Thanks Ryan!
Yes, our traffic and ranks for the roor domain have dropped after this new sub-domain was added.
-
The hypothesis behind this move was that merging of two websites will increase the authority of main website and improve ranks and traffic.
That could work if you actually merged the two sites. You did not. A subdomain is a separate site. That is why I recommended the /community folder within the main domain.
With respect to your drop in traffic after the move, I understood you were referring to the total traffic across your entire domain. If you are only referring to your root domain, then adding the subdomain should not have impacted your root domain in any manner. I would suggest investigating other possible causes for the drop.

Thanks Ryan for the detailed reply!
Yes, we have it as a sub-domain i.e. community.mainwebsite.com.
sorry for the typo.
I have a question about this:
"Even if you did everything perfectly, there is some loss of link juice from your redirect which will lead to some of your rankings dropping, which will directly lead to less traffic."
Even though there is loss of link juice from the backlinks that were originally pointing to community.com, how could that affect mainwebsite.com negatively? After all, those are additional links that we are getting after the migration. Number of backlinks to mainwebsite.com actually increased due to moving the community website.
Are we missing anything?
We made this huge change to get SEO benefit as well. The hypothesis behind this move was that merging of two websites will increase the authority of main website and improve ranks and traffic.
What do you think about this?
Thanks again for your help!

we have www.communitywebsite.mainwebsite.com
Horrible! If you were to use a subdomain, at least drop the "www".
Your primary domain is "mainwebsite.com". "www" is your first subdomain. "community" would be your second subdomain. If you were going to use a subdomain it would appear much better as "community.mainwebsite.com".
Better still, if your community site directly supports or discusses the same subject as the main site, merge them completely. www.mainsite.com/community.
A 16% drop in organic traffic is not unusual after this type of migration. Even if you did everything perfectly, there is some loss of link juice from your redirect which will lead to some of your rankings dropping, which will directly lead to less traffic. Depending on the nature of your industry, any site can bounce 15% from month-to-month based on many factors such as news, seasons, etc.
Within a month of the move being finalized, you can expect your Google rankings to be fully settled, but you may not regain your old traffic back. A few steps to take:
-
make sure every page has been 301'd correctly. Check the old site for any 301 errors, and check the new site to ensure pages are being redirected properly and not simply to the home page.
-
update all of your site's internal links to ensure they point to the correct URLs. Do a crawl test
-
update all of your signatures, social pages, etc to reflect the new URLs
-
contact any sites you have a positive relationship with and request they update any links to your site
Based on what you shared it is not possible to determine if the traffic drop is due to short term variations, items you missed during the move, or may be permanent.

Hreflang and canonical tag for new country specific website - different base domain
I have a little different situation compared to most other questions which asks for hreflang and canonical tags for country specific version of websites. This is an SEO related question and I was hoping to get some insight on your recommendations. We have an existing Australian website - say - ausnight.com.au now we want to launch a UK version of this website - the domain is - uknight.co.uk please note, we are not only changing from .com.au to .co.uk.... but the base domain name as well changed - from ausnight to uknight as you can understand, the audience for both websites is different. Both websites has most pages same with same contents.... the questions I have is - Should we put canonical tag on the new website pages? If we don't put canon tag on new website pages, what is the impact on the SEO ranking of current website? I believe we need to put hreflang tag on both websites to tell google that we have another language version (en-au vs en-gb) of the same page. Is this correct?

Does traffic for branded searches help a site rank for general terms?
A year or two ago we put up some websites which were specific to brands we own. Sure enough those sites (eg 'myBrand.com') started to rank pretty well for those brand terms eg 'mybrand curling tongs' (it's not curling tongs, btw, but you get the idea). We were getting a decent amount of traffic presumably from people who have bought or seen these products on our amazon/ebay stores. Before long, we see us starting to rank well for non branded searches eg 'curling tongs' even among decent competition. Next thing you know I'm getting told by the boss that we need to put up websites for all specific ranges, not just brands, because specificity is a bonus for ranking well. While there's probably a point that a site for MybrandCurlingTongs lends itself well to ranking for curling tongs, is there also an element that the branded searches we got (via making our brand known on amazon/ebay) helped the site gain recognition and authority? As such a new website about 'ionising hair dryers' would not rank well based on being specific, because it wouldn't be helped by a lot of branded traffic?

Organic Traffic Drop of 90% After Domain Migration
We moved our domain is http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com on April 4th. It was migrated to https://www.metro-manhattan.com Google Search Console continues to show about 420of URLs indexed for the old "NYC" domain. This number has not dropped on Search Console. Don't understand why Google has not de-indexed the old site.

For the new "Metro" domain only 114 pages are being shown as valid. Our search volume has dropped from about 85 visits a day to 12 per day. 390 URLs appear as "crawled- currently not indexed". Please note that the migrated content is identical. Nothing at all changed. All re-directs were implemented properly. Also, at the time of the migration we filed a disavow for about 200 spammy links. This disavow file was entered for the old domain and the new one as well. Any ideas as to how to trouble shoot this would be much appreciated!!! This has not been very good for business.0 -
Ranking dropped after changing title tag
I recently changed my company's site homepage title tag to make it start with our target keyword. The page was originally at page #7 or #8 and dropped to page #17 directly after I changed the page title. Is this normal? Is it's a temporary drop or should I change it back to the previous title.

How to recover google rank after changing the domain name?
I just started doing SEO for a new client. The case is a bit unique as they build a new website and for some reason lunched in under another domain name. Old name is foodstepsinasia.com and new one is foodstepsinasiatravel.com OLD one is a respected webites with 35 in MOZ page authority and with +15000 incomming link (104 root domains) NEW one is curently on 0 The programmer has just that build the new website has set it up so that when people write or find the old domain name it redirect to the front page of the new website with the new domain name. this caused that my friends lost a lot of their rankings was so I believ it was a very bad solution. But I also think I can get most of the old rankings back, but my question is what to do now to get as much back of the rankings as fast as possible?? A) I believe I must change the domain name back to foodstepsinasia.com on the new website ? O B) Should I on the old website try finding the url of the pages with most page authority and recreate these urls on the new website or should i redict them to a page with related content? Looking forward to feedback from someone who have experience with similar cases. Thanks!

Switch hosting to be closer to site visitors, and 99% dropped from rankings?
Last week I decided to switch for a UK server to a US one at Hostgator since most of my visitors are from the US. About nine hours later 99% of my pages disappeared from google rankings, only a few non-relevant pages are at position 100-200. All decent (1000-2000 word) articles on specific topics, are gone. These pages were getting 2-3 minutes per user of readership and a low bounce rate, so I think they were pretty good quality. Does anyone think it's possible I got accidentally added on a blacklisted IP? Or why would something like this happen. Since then, I've tried switching back to the old IP for 3 days, that didn't work. Now I've filed a reinclusion request with the details. Has anyone had a similar experience? What can possibly cause this massive drop in rankings and traffic? Any help is much appreciated!

What would cause a sudden rise and drop in keyword ranking?
I made one change to my site - creating a good, relevant, title. A few days later, ranking for a keyword jumped pretty well - which is what I was expecting. We were ranked 9th. Then the next ranking report showed a 20 place decline. What would cause this?

Do pages with irrelevant keywords hurt the domain overall for ranking for relevant keywords?
I have been doing SEO for the University I work at. We are optimizing our degree pages on a page-by-page basis. So hypothetically we have a page optimized for "online accounting degree" and another for "online marketing degree", etc. Although our focus is on specific page optimization, we hope the by-product is that the whole domain will start to rank better for "online degree". First of all, is this a reasonable expectation? Second, if this IS the case, will pages full of irrelevant keywords hurt the overall strategy? For example, our registrar and financial aid PDFs that are full of legal/financial mumbo-jumbo. Are these lowering our keyword density of relevant keywords across the domain?
