Big discrepancy between search volume and actual traffic
-
I've been seeing this more and more... a page that ranks well for a great keyword but the traffic is much, much less than one would expect based on information from the Google Keyword Tool. The keyword gets 3600 searches locally, but the site, #9 on the SERP, got 11 visits last month.
Does that sound like a plausible drop-off or is there something else at play?
Thanks!
-
Thanks for the information. How do you filter by exact match?
-
I would also add that the Google Keyword Tool can be way off the mark at times, giving you much higher numbers that the exact word gets, so giving good keyword terms low figures. That has been my experience when doing research with for keywords in niche (google.ie), but I have heard other say the same.
Still its good way to get a few ideas for keywords and there numbers.
Also I agree exact is way more usefully (broad can be useful at times)
-
Yeah, when you're targeting a phrase, you'll want to look only at exact-match estimates for that phrase. Broad-match is misleading when you're looking to get traffic by ranking for an exact phrase. Broad-match is more useful if you are going to be bidding for broad PPC on Adwords.
-
I'm guessing broad match... I'm familiar with the concept but is there a way to restrict it to one or the other?
Broad would make sense, it's possible that the rank is different for different combinations.
-
Is that volume exact, phrase or broad match?
If it's exact match, then I'd say, loosely based on these SERP CTR's, you're less than (but close to) normal
Position #9 = 1.25%
3600 x .0125 = 54.72I've noticed impression data from Adwords campaigns (that run ALL the time) are closer to about 1/2 that of the exact match predictions in the Adwords Keyword Tool.
Does this help?

Hi Josh, are you looking at exact-match number of searches in Google's Keyword Tool, or broad-match?

Target Search Terms Changed - does this affect traffic?
We spent the last 12 months targeting a particular search term (mortgage broker) and have been ranking well for it consistently for about 6 months now. We have decided to change the target search term to something else (insurance broker) but noticed that our traffic has started to decline since we started doing this. We are still ranking well for the initial search term, and our ranking is slowly improving for the new targeted search term in SERPs but traffic is down about 60% from January. Is it normal/expected for this to happen?

Keywords with no search volume
Hi there! What are your thoughts on optimizing pages for keywords that have no search volume (using the Keyword Planner)? I'm not sure it should be done, since optimizing for keywords that no one searches for is kind of useless, right? Or should I do it hoping that sometime in the future the keyword will have a surge on searches? Thanks!

Accuracy of search volume for keyword planner v old keyword tool?
Hi there, I'm (logged into Google Adwords) and researching search volume for keywords but I'm seeing weird results. I know that the term "outage notification" had between 1000 and 5000 monthly global searches when I last looked (I know this because I add a search volume tag to the keywords I track ranking of via Moz). Yet, now when I check global search volume via keyword planner I'm seeing only 70 global searches per month (AND low competition which I know is not true). Is this perhaps because only the exact match is reported or is something else going on? Very frustrated as I have now lost faith in the keyword research process via Google keyword planner....not sure where to go from here!! Thanks very much

Do the search engines kind of test you out at a higher ranking for a short period of time?
I ranked very well for my keywords. They are not competitive. Nonetheless, I got convertible traffic to my blog. Suddenly, I run a search for the keywords and there is this other website ranking higher than me. it seems to be a new website. No data on opensiteexplorer. So, the only thing that I can conclude and which I've been thinking that google does is to test new webpages out for a bit higher up on the rankings. If the bounces are lower than average, then I suspect that they will give you better rankings in the future. Is this somewhat how it works?

Why does Google adwords tool shows different search volume
I am not able to undertand the difference in search volume for same keyword under different heading. Let me make it clear. When i enter "Drupal Developement" in adwords tool, at the top, it shows Search term (1) Keyword Global monthly searches drupal development 390 Just below, it shows, Keyword ideas (100) Keyword Global monthly searches drupal development 40,500 I have selected the location U.S. My question is there is a huge difference in 390 and 40,500. Which is correct ?

Search volumes broken down by region
Hi, Just wondering if anyone knows if there is a keyword research tool available that breaks down search volumes by region. For example, how many searches there are in London/South East for the keyword "cars". All the tools I have seen only go down to country level. Are there any that go down to region/city level? Thanks for your help. Mik
