One platform, multiple niche sites: Worth $60/mo so each site has different class C?
-
Howdy all,
The short of it is that I currently run a very niche business directory/review website and am in the process of expanding the system to support running multiple sites out of the same database/codebase.
In a normal setup I'd just run all the sites off of the same server with all of them sharing a single IP address, but thanks to the wonders of the cloud, it would be fairly simple for me to run each site on it's own server at a cost of about $60/mo/site giving each site a unique IP on a unique c-block (in many cases a unique a-block even.)
The ultimate goal here is to leverage the authority I've built up for the one site I currently run to help grow the next site I launch, and repeat the process.
The question is: Is the SEO-value that the sites can pass to each other worth the extra cost and management overhead? I've gotten conflicting answers on this topic from multiple people I consider pretty smart so I'd love to know what other people say.

Thanks for the feedback, there may be better places to allocate that budget.
Due to the nature of the site it doesn't collect many registrations at the moment, it's mostly people coming in off of search, finding what they need and leaving. Building out a better funnel for converting visitors is the next development task after the multi-tenancy is fixed.

I suppose the question really is, could that extra $60 be used somewhere else that would benefit the SEO more then hosting the sites on different IP's.
Personally I would go with one server and use the $60 on SEO, ive seen a video from Matt Cutts saying its fine to inter-link websites but make sure they are relevant to each other.
If its a directory you must have been collecting email address? Can you not use the email db to expose the new directory to these users?

The first site I have is doing about 250k page views/mo, generating around $2k/mo, and still growing, I'm not yet sure where the plateau is.
I expect that the other sites will do well, but possibly not as well as the original since I was able to boost the first site using an unrelated domain I own with massive authority in the exact same niche.
My concern is that when I launch new sites in niches where I have no presence I won't be able to "bootstrap" them quite as easily as I did the first one. This led me to think that my main way of link building all these sites is to just have them interlink with each other but my understanding is that sites that link to each other on the same /24 don't pass much juice, if any at all, hence the idea of putting each site on it's own server/IP.
The real questions are really:
- Is putting the sites on separate servers with different c-block IPs going to allow me to pass more goodness from the original site to the other sites?
- If so, is it worth $60/mo and the additional overhead of managing multiple servers or is the advantage not that big?
Thanks for answering!

Not enough info to answer, that would depend on how many links you have pointing at the niche sites and how much traffic / revenue each website makes you per month?

Should I have multiple websites for my different brands or one main website with different tabs/areas?
My client creates apps. As well as the apps they create themselves, they have made some of their own that cover various different topics. Currently they have individual websites for each of these apps, and a website for their app making business. They are asking whether they should just have one website - their app building site, which also includes information about the two apps they've built themselves. My feeling is it's better to keep them separate. The app building site is trying to appeal to a B2B audience and gain business to build new apps. AppA is trying to help carehomes and carers to streamline their business, and AppB is trying to help workplace and employee welfare. Combining them all will mean lots of mixed messaging/keywords even if we have dedicated areas on the site. I also think it will limit how much content we can create on each without being completely overwhelming for the user. If we keep them all separate then we can have a very clear user journey. I would of course recommend having blog posts or some sort of landing page to link to AppA and AppB's websites. Thoughts? Thank you!

HREF LANG: Different navigation/structure per country: is that a problem?
Hi all, One question about the href lang tag. Our webshop sells to 4 different countries (the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium & Spain). The navigation is a little bit different for these countries, depending on how popular certain product categories are in certain countries. So, for example: Netherlands --> Category A and B are in the top navigation
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | AMAGARD
Germany --> Category B is a subcategory of product A. We want to implement the Hreflang tag, would it be a problem that the navigation/site structure (and therefore the URL structure for certain categories) are a bit different? So: The url for category B in the Netherlands is: https://www.website.com/nl/category-B/
The url for category B in Germany is: https://www.website.com/de/category-A/category-B/ Thanks in advance! Best!0 -
301ing one site's links to another
Hi, I have one site with a well-established link profile, but no actual reason to exist (site A). I have another site that could use a better link profile (site B). In your experience, would 301 forwarding all of site A's pages to site B do anything positive for the link profile/organic search of the site B? Site A is about boating at a specific lake. Site B is about travel destinations across the U.S. Thanks! Best... Michael

What's the average rank update time after site and/or backlink changes?
What's currently the typical time, ON AVERAGE, it takes to see ranking changes when significant improvements are made to significant ranking signals on a long-established (as opposed to brand new) website? Does the rank update associated with on-page optimization happen sooner than addition of quality backlinks?

I've got duplicate pages. For example, blog/page/2 is the same as author/admin/page/2\. Is this something I should just ignore, or should I create the author/admin/page2 and then 301 redirect?
I'm going through the crawl report and it says I've got duplicate pages. For example, blog/page/2 is the same as author/admin/page/2/ Now, the author/admin/page/2 I can't even find in WordPress, but it is the same thing as blog/page/2 nonetheless. Is this something I should just ignore, or should I create the author/admin/page2 and then 301 redirect it to blog/page/2?

Site Speed, is it worth it from a SEO point?
Hi, I understand a site which loads quickly is greater for the user but how does site speed affect rankings? I mean does Google log the speed pages load, the faster it loads the better the signal? So say I have a page which loads in 1.5sec would Google 'Rate' the site better if it loaded in say 0.8sec? Thanks.

Development site is live (and has indexed) alongside live site - what's the best course of action?
Hello Mozzers, I am undertaking a site audit and have just noticed that the developer has left the development site up and it has indexed. They 301d from pages on old site to equivalent pages on new site but seem to have allowed the development site to index, and they haven't switched off the development site. So would the best option be to redirect the development site pages to the homepage of the new site (there is no PR on dev site and there are no links incoming to dev site, so nothing much to lose...)? Or should I request equivalent to equivalent page redirection? Alternatively I can simply ask for the dev site to be switched off and the URLs removed via WMT, I guess... Thanks in advance for your help! 🙂

Local Search For Multiple Locations With One Physical Address
I have a company that works in multiple locations but only has a physical address in one location. Is it possible to get this type of business listed in multiple locations? What is the most ethical way of doing this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Christina
