What is the best practice for using the same content on two pages?
-
I have two websites in a very similar niche(s)...I have good unique content article that I would like to use on both sites because it adds value to the visitor experience..
Example:
Science of Colors would be very useful for my seattle house painting paint colors page.
I want to have content so they do not need to leave the site to navigate to second site. Would the identical content trigger a penalty or would it be crawled, ignored, and not indexed.
Does having a rel=authorship on one site trump the site..Or is it a pile of BAD.

John,
Don't worry about google, write the story for your readers.
Target it to their needs, rewrite, paraphrase, add extra information for one group and different information for another group.
I'm not suggesting you only change a few words. I mean to really target the article for each group.
If you want to see how much google cares about duplicate content, try this search on google:
Romney wins Ohio, 4 other Super Tuesday states
Check those results and tell me that google cares about duplicate content.
If google really cared about having only one original story, none of those sites would get any search traffic.
You can see this for every single AP story, all day every day - those sites are paying a lot of money for AP content. If google was penalizing them for always having duplicate content, they would never show up in search results.

Alan, Thank you for your considered response.
If I only alter some text, and differentiated certain content like images and video do you believe that is enough to avoid a duplicate content potential P?

I thnk you mean in the one you don't want to rank, the canonical tag should point to the one that you do want to rank. The canonical tag points to the original.
John, there is another option. You can edit one of the stories so that it directly addresses the visitors to that particular site. You may have a different headline, different description. There may be additional text. there may be text removed. Also, you can use a photo or a graphic or a video in this one, that isn't in the other. What this does is tailor the story for those readers.

Do you want both the pages to show up in the SERPS ? If yes, no, this would hurt you. The only way to do this if you only want to do it for the users / user experience is to have a canonical tag pointing to the one that you don't want to rank in the search engines.

Web page or blog ? Which one is preferable
Hello, For one of our sites, 19 keywords are ranking on Home page. But, the home page doesn't have content with those keywords. I am afraid that with Google updates, we will eventually lose all the ranking position for these keywords. Should we ask the client to create blog around those keywords or create separate pages ? Thanks

Hit With Panda, How Should I block pages?
Hello! I believe Ive been hit with Panda, I have a large Ecommerce site with literally thousands of pages, but working on adding custom content daily. Should I block pages that have duplicated copy, that dynamically insert a product/artist/team name? Will this help with my huge ranking drop? If so after this has been done should I send a request reconsideration to google? Or will it just happen automatically? I believe this is a algo penalty and not manual, as I have not received any messages in my Webmaster. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank You!

Duplicate content on forums?
I am creating a forum. I am concerned that when I create the forum, users will copy content from other places to post onto my forum. How negative/bad is this in terms of google eyes? I am concerned when people copy press releases and re-post it to the forum. Should I make a rule that all content must be typed and not copied? Or is a little copying okay?

Block Low Quality Pages?
What are your thoughts on blocking (in robots.txt) and/or noindexing low-quality pages to defend against Panda, assuming you can't remove, redirect, or add quality content to it? Also, assume there are no external links pointing to these low-quality pages, no social shares, and zero incoming organic traffic. Has anyone had experience with this as a solution to Panda?

Does content have a shelf life for link building efforts?
Do you think that content (that doesn't have a date attached) has a shelf life? Especially content that is effectively timeless such as a quiz? I've noticed in my link building efforts that most links are achieved within the first couple of weeks, and that there seems to be a point of diminishing returns. Why do you think that may be?

How to best implement "metered model" on a site
Hi, I'm scratching my head over how to best implement the "metered model" on a site without users being able to game it all too easily. Has anybody in this QA forums implemented one before and is willing to share his/her best practises and findings? Currently I think raising the bar to force everybody to login is a bad idea + we would still need to open the site for google and other engines and can be tricked that way. Also this might lead to some penalty (cloaking)? Using cookies might not be enought as I think almost every Internet user these days knows that this might be the #1 place to look and they are deleted in a second. Counting based on a users IP-adress is also a bit critical as this is not accurate enough. Should we just use cookies and hope for the best?
