Google Webspam Algo Update 24/4/12
-
Having just checked our clients rankings 95% have not been affected, in fact many have moved up rankings. 1 or 2 have had big drops
Who has been effected by this? The forums are full of people talking about sites being floored from the serp's.
it will be interesting to follow the aftermath of this and get some insight into what exactly has changed!

"Something to note is that the problem could fix itself. Out of that 3-5% of the queries impacted, some sites are gonna get hit incidentally. Google seems to be decent at spotting these over time and fixing it. Sometimes people get the short end of the stick though."
Thats a very good point. We have often notice websites take a hit after an algo date, only to come back a few days or weeks later.
One thing is sure- this seems to have affected quite a lot of sites. The site we have seen drop has a very natural link profile and no "over optimisation" in terms of keyword stuffing etc.
There seems to be alot of poor websites that have benefited, as mentioned- blank sites now ranking #1 on google! Lets hope we some further tweaks in the near future as currently it seems that there have been a lot of "incidental" hits!

did you apply any Seo methods that aren't white hat? Perhaps bought links for a couple of bucks? What efforts did you take for optimization?
If you could let us know perhaps we can give some direct advise on how to change the rankings for you again.
kind regards
Jarno

There is one thing I always do in the week or two following an update: nothing at all
Let the fallout happen, and see what other people are saying. While we know they did the update, we don't have a ton of metrics yet on what bigger sites got hit. Once you do you will be better equipped to assess the situation.
I see a lot of people panic when they drop. They want to build links, change the title tags, tweak the KW density and change their menu structure all at once. Even if these were all practical, how could you know which one was the most effective if you did them all within a few weeks of each other?
Cheers,
Vinnie

So far, I see two sites that we work with that have notably dropped. Hopefully over the next few days we'll start to figure out specific causes and solutions.

Looks like we posted this at about the same time! I will just close mine and discuss it in yours.

How Google could quickly fix the whole Links problem...
A Thursday morning brainstorm that hopefully an important Google manager will see... Google could quickly end all the problems of link buying, spammy links, and negative SEO with one easy step: Only count the 100 best follow links to any domain. Ignore all the nofollows and everything beyond the 100 best. They can choose what "best" means. Suddenly links would be all about quality. Quantity would not matter. Fiverr links, comment links, and all the other mass-produced spam links would literally be ignored. Unless that's all a domain had, and then they would surely be stomped by any domain with 100 decent natural links. Would it be an improvement over today's situation?

How to remove the inbound links of a website from Google Webmaster Tools?
Hello viewers, One of my projects (BannerBuzz.com) is having linked with this Site: http://www.article-niche.com/ and we can see so many inbound links in our Webmaster account from this site, we have already disavowed this site but still it is found in our Webmaster Tools and we don’t have option to mail them as the site is down, so kindly anyone help us out how to remove this back-links and I want to remove it from my Webmaster account as well as from “Search Results” as the site is down. Currently as this site is show down from long time and because of its back-links, our website (BannerBuzz.com) has been penalized by Google.

Manual action penalty by Google
Hello, We have a big well-known brand - www.titanbet.com. This brand is well established and the site has been live for almost 4 years now ranking very well on some very strong KWs. we received a message from Google on Aug 29th saying “Google has detected a pattern of artificial or unnatural links pointing to your site” and that “Google has applied a manual spam action to titanbet.com/” The past 2 weeks since the penalty was received we saw some of our major KWs drop in rankings. BUT all brand related KWs were still ranked 1st Over the last weekend the penalty has worsen and we no longer rank on any of the brands KWs (we find the site in 5th page at best). Moreover, when searching for a sentence from the any of the page on the site in Google, we see other sites ahead of us in the SERPs. Based on the message we originally received from Google we have started cleaning some of the bad links to the site. We found a lot of links from bad sites, some of them are not indexed and probably penalized as well, some are from affiliate websites and some are from some automatic indexation websites based in China and Russia

we have started reaching out to some of these sites to try and have them remove our links. We are also worried about the duplication of our site. We have found many other sites (mostly affiliate websites) have copied and in some cases completely duplicated our content. Google for some reason has chosen to penalize us for this. Although we do not have control over these other sites. We have run copyscape to try and figure out which pages are the most problematic and we will try to re-write the content on these pages. But what if the other sites copy us again? Any suggestions on the above would be appreciated as we try to understand why Google has penalized us. thank you Titan Bet Team0 -
Did Google Search Just Get Crazy Local?
Hey All, I think it's a known fact at this point that when signed into a personal Google account while doing a search, the results are very oriented around keywords and phrases you have already searched for, as well as your account's perceived location; for instance when I wanted to check one of my own web properties in SE listings I would sign out or it would likely appear first as a false reading. Today I noticed something very interesting: even when not signed in, Google's listings were giving precedence to locality. It was to a very extreme degree, as in when searching for "web design," a firm a mile away ranked higher than one 1.5 miles away and such. It would seem that the algos having this high a level of location sensitivity and preference would actually be a boon for the little guys, which is, I assume why it was implemented. However, it brings up a couple of interesting questions for me. 1. How is this going to affect Moz (or any SE ranking platform, for that matter) reports? I assume that Google pulls locations from IP Addresses, therefore would it not simply pull the local results most relevant for the Moz server(s) IP? 2. What can one do to rise above this aggressive level of location based search? I mean, my site (which has a DA of 37 and a PA of 48) appears above sites like webdesign.org (DA of 82, PA of 85). Not that I'm complaining at the moment, but I could see this being a fairly big deal for larger firms looking to rank on a national level. What gives? I'd love to get some opinions from the community here if anyone else has noticed this...

Google places rejected
google has rejected a few listing i have for certain businesses, i have read the guidlines and I am well inside them. It does say that if business name is changed you need to re-verify, but does not allow you to do so. I think google have lost their way, they should stop building operating systems and electric cars and get their web site sorted out.

How to achieve the highest global and local relevance in google?
Let's say I have a company that has its main business in Europe for thefollowing languages: English German Portugese French Italian And let's say some other markets (e.g. the Portugese one in south america) is also important. The question now is how should we structure the Domain if we want onlyone top level domain (www.company.com)? a) By using subdomains to target users with Google Webmaster Tools for the relevant country: portugal.company.com/pt (same content) brasil.company.com/pt (same content) germany.company.com/de england.company.com/en etc. or b) by using virtual folders www.company.com/pt www.company.com/de www.company.com/en
