Plurals and the SEOmoz On Page Report Card
-
I have some pages on my website that receive an "A" grade with the SEOmoz On Page Report Card if I use a plural term in a phrase (say, "landscape designers in Dallas") but an "F" grade if I use the singular term (say, "landscape designer in Dallas").
Is this a true and accurate reflection of how search engines see the page?
Am I going to rank well for plural terms but not for singular, given the specific on-page content I'm using in this example?
Or is this an opportunity for SEOmoz to tweak its' algorithm to better reflect the search engines?

Thrilled to help! I know it's a pain, but it's worth it!

Good advice, Matt, and thanks for taking a moment to provide an actual data point!
And yes, we definitely take a balanced approach combining on page, off page, PR, social, and more. This just happens to be "on page" day for me.

I'm a huge fan of the SEOmoz Report Card, and what I would say is that it rates your page for the provided keyword, not for variations. The Report Card is meant to be a tool, and like any tool, the user and the users brain is an intended element.
I would say that if your primary exact match searches prefer a plural, over a non-plural, you primarily optimize towards the plural, but you also build anchor text links that support both.
If I were in your shoes and I got an F, I would go in and use the non-prefered phrase in an effort to reach a "B" or a "C" letter grade from the report card tool.
Google does discriminate against plurals. I just ran a test using one of our clients, with the plural, and then without, and they were #1 for the plural, and #2 for without, with someone else ranking #1. The plural does matter, thus if you're targeting the plural, and you were given an F by the Report Card tool, you will get SOME credit for Partial Match usage, but probably not enough if you're optimizing based on on-site factors alone.
Remember, per the 2011 Search Engine Ranking Factors, on-site SEO only make sup what, maybe 16% of the sites total ranking?
My best answer is a balanced strategy, with a diversified backlink portfolio that covers multiple bases of anchor text, both exact and partial match, plural and singular.
Cheers!

Hi Matthew,
I agree with all of your points.
Nevertheless, I still think that it's overdramatic for the On Page Report Card to go from an "A" grade to an "F" grade when changing a single letter. It just doesn't seem to reflect the reality of how search engines look at content.

Hi Ahirai,
This is a great question and something that comes up quite a bit.
Google has some basic forgiveness for Plurals, but you want to mix up your keyword placement at least a little bit so that you're not 100% exact match (this is my opinion, others might disagree). Naturally, websites are going to reference keywords in partial match and exact match formats, and my belief and in my experience I've seen Google give credit for partial match keywords above and beyond simply following the SEOmoz Report Card.
What also supports this is your inbound link anchor text. Diversity is everything. You want to have some nofollow links, you want to have some exact match anchor text links, some brand name anchor text links, some partial match anchor text links. Google doesn't respond well to 100% Exact Match thinking.
We're all taught, in link building, that No Follow is bad, but what if all the competitors have 30% NoFollow links on average, and your site has 0% NoFollow links. That might sound like really good SEO, but you've created an unnatural Backlink Profile.
So mix up your usage as best you can, within reason, and use a majority of exact match keywords, but also use a few iterations and variants as well.
We get so hung up on the keywords themselves, but often just as important is the words that are around the keyword, the "Trees" that support your "Landscaping", etc. You have to look at the bigger picture.
Hope this helped!

Benchmark report for client
Hello, Wondering if someone can tell me how to make a clean, professional report of the most important SEO metrics for a client, from a month ago. I have MozPro and want to be able to see where we stood in rankings, links, crawl issues, landing page, PA/DA, etc when we began. I am thinking that there has got to be a way I can customize a report in Pro and then, if not all the info I want is there (traffic stats?), I can integrate that info in? Is there an easier way? I should've done it when I signed up and started working on the site, but....I didn't. ;( Thanks!

Confused - SEOMoz Reporting On Different Domains?
I wasn't sure which report to set up on my domain, so I set up 2 different ones which now appear like this in the Dashboard under the Campaigns section: *mysite.com www.mysite.com I want to delete the wrong report, but I noticed that they produce two slightly different report results which is interesting. My domain does not have any subdomains - which report should I delete?

Using seomoz.
Hi, I'm scouring the web for new links, and am taking a closer look at OSE; I'm trying to gauge whether the PA & DA rating(s) in the results page for a domain search takes into account any penalty signals the site may be showing, and whether there is a 'real' way to identify how much value links from the source will give you (if for example, there's already x10 other links away from that page or x100 links away from that domain). Basically - what else needs to be taken into account when using this app to identify link sources, etc. Thanks, David

Is it possible to submit a page to the seomoz index?
We recently got added to dmoz and botw and would like to see those links considered in our domain authority as we are tracking our progress and comparing ourselves to other sites. Is it possible to submit links to the seomoz index manually to have those tracked? (If I am even understanding this correctly)

Duplicate page reported in Wordpress site, but I can't find it in All Pages list
In a crawl report a duplicate page content warning has been displayed. The two urls are 1. http://www.superheroes.com.au/shop
Moz Pro | | Andyfools
and
2. http://www.superheroes.com.au/shop/category/catalog/ It's a WordPress site and I cannot find the second page anywhere in the list of All Pages in the Admin (I want to add canonicalisation code) When I view the 2nd page and click Edit Page, it redirects to the 1st page. Any ideas where SEOMoz would be finding this 2nd page or how it might be being generated? (btw I didn't build this site) Thanks Simon0 -
SEOmoz tool Issue?
Hi Mozzers, I am doing a web maintenance task for a client and it's been weeks that Moz is detecting 49 duplicate pages ( contact page). I thought resolving the issue when creating the xml sitemap and excluding those duplicates. The moz tool would still detect them, so I went in making a search with some of these duplicate to check if they were indexed but non of them were indexed. So my question is has anyone recently experienced similar issues? Is the moz tool not 100% accurate? Thanks for sharing your thoughts and answers

Why can't I add my facebook page to SEOMOZ? Also having other facebook issues.
Hi, I have no trouble adding my twitter page in SEOMOZ, but its giving me an error when I try to load my facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Eugene-Computer-Geeks/226660334011653 . I also tried adding my personal facebook page which is tied to the Eugene Computer Geeks facebook page, but SEOMOZ wont accept that either. My business facebook page is tied to my personal account, and its also not showing up on the facebook search. Any idea how I can make my business show up? I wish I could just start over fresh and have my buinsess setup with it's own facebook account. Thanks.

Why am I still Unranked in SEOmoz?
I was very active in SEOmoz's Q&A forums today and completed my profile - raising my Moz points from 0 to 50. On my profile, however, I am still listed as Unranked. Also, I do not appear on the SEOmoz Top Members List next to other users with 50 points. I'm guessing this is something that is updated once a day or so, and the rank will update tomorrow. Is my suspicion correct?
