Duplicate content issue

I have recently built a site that has a main page intended to rank for national coverage. This site also has a number of pages targeted at local searches, these pages are slight variations of each other with town specific keywords. Does anyone know if google will see this as spam and quarantine my site from ranking? Thanks

You want to rank for local searches right? Now the question is do you have physical presence in those places? If not, by making city specific pages just to get rank for will definitely invite penalty sooner or later. Think about the customers first and not the search engines.
_Now, if you do have branches in those cities, you can create Google Local listing, can have separate landing pages for them given the fact that those pages say something unique about the business etc. Do not add rehash content that no one is going to add. Focus on adding value to users’ experience. _

Creating a site with multiple landing pages targeted to different regions is not new, therefore Google has made updates to try attempt to stop sites with low quality from capitalizing on localized keywords (miami keyword, tuscon x, san diego x, etc) where x is your main keyword.
What this means is that you need to do more than simply duplicate your pages and mix up the keywords, replace the local terms and create new URLs and titles/descriptions. What you should do is create completely unique copy, dynanic content and/or user engagement, local citations will help each landing page, and make sure to get local backlinks to each landing page.

While I certainly don't want to pretend to be able to predict anything Google might do, to me, the fact that you are thinking about this as being a potential problem should be enough to make you consider some options. Depending on how many pages you have, it may not be that difficult to get really truly original content produced for those other pages.
Will Google choose not to index you? I have no idea.
My guess is that you get indexed, but may not rank very high if the content is substantially similar on all of those pages. You might get stuck in the proverbial "sandbox." (ranked so low that no one can find you).
My gut says, if you have to ask "is this duplicate content?" It probably is, so make it unique.

Duplicate items across different pages?
On our new website we have a testimonials page which you can cycle through them. We also have the testimonial on the our work / project page. Essentially this is duplicate content from another page, what's the best thing to do here? In the sake of SEO, remove the duplicate content and only have one? Or won't it make much difference?

Above the Fold Content - Use of large images
Hi All, Our designers have come to the SEO team to ask if have a large image across the top of the page taking up a large majority of the above the fold real estate will impact our SEO. Our initial thoughts are no as long as we have an optimised H1 visibal to the user landing there which informs them what the page is about. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Can multiple domains compete with one another if they have the same/similar content?
Could an ecommerce site with a .co.nz nd .com.au domain compete with one another and hard organic rankings if the content of the pages are the same? All the links would be identical (apart from .co.nz or .com.au) the product descriptions, pages titles etc... would all be identical or similar (our page titles are ever so slightly different). Could this be hurting us? Thanks in advance ^ Paul

Parallax, SEO, and Duplicate Content
We are working on a project that uses parallax to provide a great experience to the end user, and we are also trying to create a best case scenario for SEO. We have multiple keywords we are trying to optimize. We have multiple pages with the parallax function built into it. Basically each member of the primary navigation is it's own page, with all subpages built below it using the parallax function. Our navigation currently uses the hashbang method to provide custom URL's for each subpage. And the user is appropriately directed to the right section based on that hashbang. www.example.com/About < This is its own page www.example.com/about/#/history < This is a subpage that you scroll to on the About page We are trying to decide what the best method will be for trying to optimize each subpage, but my current concern is that because each subpage is really a part of the primary page, will all those URL's be seen as duplicate content? Currently the site can also serve each subpage as it's own page as well, so without the parallax function. Should I include those as part of the sitemap. There's no way to navigate to them unless I include them in the sitemap, but I don't want Google to think I'm disingenuous in providing them links that don't exist, solely for the purpose of SEO, but truthfully all of the content exists and is available to the user. I know that a lot of people are asking these questions, and there really are no right answers yet, but I'm curious about everyone else's experience so far.

How To Avoid Duplicate Content
We are an eCommerce site for autoparts. It is basically impossible to avoid duplicate content, and I think we are getting penalized by Google for it. Here is why it is impossible. Let's say I sell a steering rack for a 2000 Honda Accord. I need an SEO rich page for 2000 Honda Accord Steering Rack. I sell steering racks for more than 25 years of Honda Accords. I can try and make the copy different but there is no way to spin the copy that many times and make it seem like it is not duplicate copy. This even gets more complicated because I sell hundreds of parts for each year of a Honda Accord, plus a lot of times you even have to go down to the engine size of the car for the right part. I can't use a redirect, ie 301 redirect because they are not the same pages. One is for a 2000 Honda Accord and the other a 2001 Honda Accord, and so on. Is their a redirect out there that I do not know about that would help me out in this case? Also, if their is no way around this and I am getting penalized would it be better to eliminate all these pages, possibly losing my ability to rank high on searches such as "2000 Honda Accord Steering Rack," and just replace with a page that has a Year Make Model, and Part dropdown which just takes the customer a checkout page?

Subscription Video Content
I've never used video other than embedding youtube videos. This time I want to host my own with encryption for the subscriber content and sample videos for general consumption. Would love any pointers at all. I would also like the content to be streamable on ipad etc. What platform would you use (adobe etc) and why? I don't want to start out on one road to discover down the line that it sucks for SEO. Obviously the subscription content will suck since it will only be available to logged in users, but the rest..... In a nutshell I want to know how to host video well for SEO and make it shareable, but with the option to also have some of the video content subscription only. (should have put it like that to start with probably.)

Penalized by duplicate content?
Hello, I am in a very weird position. I am managing a website(EMD) which a part of it dynamically creates pages. The former webmaster who create this system though that this would help with SEO but I dought! The thing is that now the site has about 1500 pages which must look duplicate but are they really duplicate? Each page has a unique URL but the content is pretty much the same: one image and a different title with 5-8 words. There is more: All these pages are not accessible by the users but only for the crawlers!!! This URL machine is a part of a php - made photo gallery which i never understood the sense of it! The site overall is not performing very well in SERP, especially after Penguin, but judging by the link profile, the Domain authority, construction (ok besides that crazy photo gallery) and content, it never reached the position it should have in the past. The majority of these mysterious pages - and mostly their images - are cached by Google and some of them are in top places to some SERP - the ones that match the small title on page - but the numbers are poor, 10 - 15 clicks per month. Are these pages considered as duplicated, although they are cached, and is it safe for the site just to remove 1500 at once? The seomoz tools have pointed some of them as dups but the majority not! Can these pages impact the image of the whole site in search engines?( drop in Google and has disappeared from Yahoo and Bing!) Do I also have to tell Google about the removal? I have not seen anything like it before so any comment would be helpful! Thank you!
