Local SEO, located just outside major city
-
I have never had a local website, but I have a friend who owns a company that would be strictly local so it made wonder:
If a company is located just outside a major metropolitan area, is it possible for this company to compete with companies that are located within the actual city.
Here's an example. A construction company located in Plano, Texas wants to rank for Dallas Construction Companies. Plano is 15 mins from downtown Dallas. Does this company have much of a chance ranking on the map for Dallas Construction companies when they have a business address of Plano, Texas?

Hi Kade,
Good question and one that comes up frequently, because so many businesses are just outside the borders of major cities. The simple answer is - Google considers a business as being most relevant to its city of location. So, if you're in Plano, Google views you as a good answer for searches containing the word 'Plano' or for searches from Plano-based devices. Google does not consider you as primarily relevant to Dallas.
Some businesses have actually taken the rather drastic step of relocating just to get into those big cities, or have even moved within their city of location to get closer to the city centroid and improve their chances of rankings. Chris Silver Smith recently published a very good piece on this potentials and pitfalls of this approach:
http://searchengineland.com/relocation-relocation-relocation-a-new-local-ranking-tactic-135325
So, where does that leave a company like the one your friend owns? If you can't outrank Dallas businesses in the blended-local pack is their anything you can do?
The one path many businesses explore taking is to create city landing pages on their websites for their service radius cities. For example, if your friend does a lot of construction work in Dallas, he could have a page on his website showcasing his work there. And, he could back this up with an ongoing stream of blog posts highlighting his work in Dallas.
Will this enable him to outrank Dallas-based competitors? It's unlikely, and pretty much out of the question when it comes to his blended local rankings, but he may be able to get some secondary organic rankings for Dallas-related searches, driving some targeted traffic and leads.
I would discuss this idea with him, once he understands how Google views his business as being relevant to Plano because of locale. This isn't a dead-end situation, by any means, but it's definitely a challenging one, and calls for much creativity and effort.

Is SEO as Effective on AJAX Sites?
Hey Everyone, I had a potential client contact me about doing SEO for their site and I see that they have an AJAX site where all the content is rendered dynamically via AJAX. I've been doing SEO for years, but never had a client with an AJAX site. I did a little research and see how you can setup alternative pages (or snapshots as Google calls them) with the actual content so the pages are crawlable and will get indexed, but I'm wondering if that is as effective as optimizing static HTML pages or if Google treats AJAX page alternatives as less trustworthy/valuable. Also, does having the site in AJAX effect link building and social sharing? With the link structure, it seems there could be some issues with pointing links and passing link juice to internal pages Thanks! Kurt

How to seo websites on another server
We have partners that want us to build and manage a co-branded white label for them. We will have unique content on the white label, however the white label will be located on our server. I was planning to put it on a subdomain and mask the URL, however was told that google will see through that and not give any credit to the white label. Our partners all have high PR and we are a new company with low PR. We want the white labels to get the credit from the partner websites. Should we do it through url masking or by changing the A Record in the other website to point to our server?

Wordpress Blogs and SEO
So far we have been creating separate blogs on wordpress.com for our sites, and writing there. Today I was told that there was better SEO hosting the blog on the actual domain. i.e. www.widgets.com/blog instead of widget.wordpress.com Is this true? Oddly I have had my WP beat my own URL on one account. So I am not sure if this is valid. Can someone tell me pros and cons of both? Thanks!

Local Offices Optimization
One of my client has offices in 11 different cities and we have a page on the website for each office. I have optimized each page as well as I could for each city. Every on-page aspect I nailed and I even added a unique 100-150 words text and 3 pictures of the offices to each page to make sure Google wouldn't penalize me for having nearly identical pages. Here's one of the page (the Montreal office): http://pierreroy.com/en/offices/bankruptcy-trustee-montreal/ However, even after doing all that, I can't seem to get as many #1 rankings as I think I should. I get outranked by websites not optimizing their page properly... Is it because of inbound links metrics? How do you build links to each office page without spamming? Any advice? Thanks!!

SEO - What Should We Do...
Hi Guys, Hope your all OK. Were having major problems with our homepage ranking for our main keyword - we were originally 4 but over the Christmas period our SEO company reported a fault with one of there servers that they were using for links, because of this fault these links were de-indexed from the search engine and in turn we have plummeted to 10th... At the time we had a landing page with an exact match keyword in it, e.g: www.ourdomainname.co.uk/key-word/ we were told to 301 this to our main page in Google but when we have looked today its now showing this page instead of our homepage. We also have another domain that we are using for a forum at the moment, now this domain name is an exact match doming e.g www.keyword.co.uk. The question is do we gamble and 301 our whole site to www.keyword.co.uk and see if we can get this ranking better? Thanks, Scott
