Internal Link Counts in SEOMoz Report?
-
Hi,
We ran a site diagnostic and it came back with thousands of pages that have more than 100 internal links on a page; however, the actual number of links on those pages seems to be far less than what was reported. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Phil
UPDATE:
So we've looked at the source code and realized that for each product we link to the product page in multiple ways - from the product image, product title and price. So we have three internal links to the same page from each product listing, which is being counted by the SEOMoz crawler as hundreds of links on each page.
But in terms of the Googlebot, is this as egregious as having hundreds of links to different pages or does it not matter as much?

Hi Vinnie,
Google only counts the first link in regards to Anchor text - although there appear to be ways around this if you care to do so, but for the average person, yes, only the first link:

I asked this same question a few weeks back and the answer I got is that Google and other engines should only be counting the first link as far as number of links on a page goes. That makes me curious though about anchor text and which gets counted first. So you may link to a page 5 times on a single page but only the first link is looked at. Can anyone back this up? I couldn't find any official stance regarding it but it makes sense for the exact reason above. Lot's of sites are redundant with image linking and text linking, as well as side nav linking.

Are you counting links in drop-down menus and side navigation? I think they are counted in the Site Diagnostic.

have you viewed the source of those pages? Looked for rogue links? Or URLs embedded in scripts you thought were hidden from search bots? There are all sorts of reasons for the reading that becomes clear when examining the source view (seen as Googlebot sees it).

Internal Link Rank Flow
I've read in many articles that pages can "pass" rank to other pages internally. Is anyone aware of any well done internal linking case studies which confirm this? If my homepage has the strongest Page Authority, would linking to another page deeper into my website from my homepage boost my rank for the deeper page in Google (more so than linking to the deep page from a page with lower page authority)?

Optimizing internal links or over-optimizing?
For a while I hated the look of the internal links page of Google Web Master Tools account for a certain site. With a total of 120+K pages, the top internal link was the one pointing to "FAQ". With around 1M links. That was due to the fact, on every single page, both the header and the footer where presenting 5 links to the most popular questions. The traffic of those FAQ pages is non-existent, the anchor text is not SEO interesting, and theoretically 1M useless internal links is detrimental for page juice flow. So I removed them. Replacing the anchor with javascript to keep the functionality. I actually left only 1 “pure” link to the FAQ page in the footer (site wide). And overnight, the internal links page of that GWT account disappeared. Blank, no links. Now... Mhhh... I feel like... Ops! Yes I am getting paranoid at the idea the sudden disappearance of 1M internal links was not appreciated by google bot. Anyone had similar experience? Could this be seen by google bot as over-optimizing and be penalized? Did I possibly triggered a manual review of the website removing 1M internal links? I remember Matt Cutts saying adding or removing 1M pages (pages) would trigger a flag at google spam team and lead to a manual review, but 1M internal links? Any idea?

Ranking Internationally
Whats the best URL strategy to rank for one term in different countries? We currently rank well in Australia, but are tackling many countries over the next few months. The page I am ranking is http://www.spendbitcoins.com/buy for the term 'buy bitcoins' or 'buy bitcoins in Australia' (replace Australia with each specific country, i.e. New Zealand, Japan, etc.) These are the strategies I have come up with, is one of these good or is there a different better way? Use country specific TLDs, pulling the content from the same site w/ translations Use country specific TLDs and create separate sites and create completely original content Use country specific TLDs, forwarding to the primary domain use a subdomain from the same site modify the page link to be something like spendbitcoins.com/buy/new-zealand Don't worry about any of this and just get links from sites with the proper TLD

Link Juice flow control
Hi, I'm really interested in a good explanation of how to control the flow of link juice. Most of my inbound links currently go to my home page, and I was just wondering how to maximise the link juice flow to those pages that I want ranking. Is there any benefit to nofollowing pages in my navigation that I don't need to rank? As above, but with links in my footer, such as privacy policy and the like (can i not waste link juice on these pages?) Does more link juice flow to pages higher up in my code? These are just some of the questions I'm concerned with. Basically, I'd really like to know the best-practices for sending link juice to where it is needed most. Thanks, Matt - No Yelling Driving School
